Sex between Danny and Alex
New original co-production, London Spy, is a five-part miniseries created by acclaimed best-selling author Tom Rob Smith (Child 44), co-produced with BBC Two and produced by Working Title Television. It will air on BBC America in 2015.
The gripping, contemporary, emotional thriller stars Ben Whishaw (The Hour, Skyfall, Bright Star) as Danny, an innocent, young romantic drawn into a dangerous world of espionage. He is joined by Academy Award-winning Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge!, Bridget Jones’ Diary, Harry Potter), British actress Charlotte Rampling OBE, whose recent role in Restless in 2012 saw her receive an Emmy Award nomination, and newcomer Edward Holcroft (Wolf Hall).
London Spy is directed by Jakob Verbruggen, whose credits include The Fall and the US version of The Bridge.
On his first television drama, creator and writer Tom Rob Smith says: “London Spy has gathered an exceptional cast and a visionary director. I couldn’t be more excited, or proud.”
Juliette Howell, Head of Television at Working Title Television, says: “Working Title couldn’t be more proud to be producing this captivating drama. Incredible scripts, a hugely gifted director and a world-class cast; London Spy exudes quality through and through.”
London Spy is the story of a chance romance between two people from very different worlds, one from the headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service, the other from a world of clubbing and youthful excess. Danny (Whishaw) – gregarious, hedonistic, romantic and adrift, falls for the anti-social enigmatic and brilliant Alex (Holcroft). Just as the two of them realize that they’re perfect for each other, Alex disappears. Danny, utterly ill-equipped to take on the complex and codified world of British espionage, must decide whether he’s prepared to fight for the truth.
Tom Rob Smith’s award-winning Child 44 trilogy was an international publishing sensation and has been turned into a movie with Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Noomi Rapace, produced by Ridley Scott, scheduled for release in April 2015.
London Spy is produced by Guy Heeley, and executive producers are Tom Rob Smith, Juliette Howell, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner for Working Title Television, and Head of Independent Drama Commissioning, Polly Hill, for BBC Two. The miniseries will be distributed by NBC Universal and BBC Worldwide.

Olivier (Simon Haycock) takes his boyfriend James (Hugo Bolton) on a romantic break to his house in the South of France. Whilst is France they bump into Caroline (Elly Condron), an old friend of James’ who has been dumped by her boyfriend. The couple agree to let Caroline join them for their vacation but Olivier is less than happy at having a third person around for the duration. As the days go by Olivier and Caroline clash but soon they realise their dislike of each other may actually be covering up something more surprising.
Wasp is the feature-length debut of Swiss writer/director Philippe Audi-Dor. The film features only three actors and takes place in and around a beautiful house in Gordes, Provence. One of the first things you notice is that Wasp is incredibly understated and that’s definitely one of its strengths. Audi-Dor doesn’t feel the need to make his characters veer off onto monologues to move the plot along and often the silences in the film speak volumes about the characters.
The central plot focuses on the arrival of Caroline into the midst of Olivier and James’ romantic break. Early on in the movie Caroline questions whether either men have been with a woman before and Olivier confesses he has but not since he came out. It’s established early on that the strong-willed Caroline is happy to push whatever buttons she needs to in order to get a reaction and despite an initial dislike between her and Olivier, the two characters start to be drawn to one another.
It’s at this point that the film gets really interesting. We’ve seen countless films exploring closeted characters that are attracted to the same sex but we’ve never seen a film before where a man who identifies as gay begins to question if he is indeed gay or possibly bisexual. The way the story unfolds is really intriguing and we commend Audi-Dor for doing something different and unexpected. The tension that builds between Olivier and Caroline does so expertly and at a believable pace.
We really don’t want to give too much else away about the plot but all we’ll say is that there are plenty of surprising twists and turns as you head to Wasp’s climax. Audi-Dor has assembled a stellar cast for the movie with all of the leads equal to one another in terms of their performance. Simon Haycock does a great job of conveying Olivier’s conflict through his emotive performance and he has superb chemistry with both Hugo Bolton and Elly Condron. Bolton makes what could have been a fairly flighty role rather meaty and Condron has great fun playing the devilishly manipulative Caroline. The trio works really well together and they really excel in the scenes where the tension threatens to boil over.
Audi-Dor, who wrote the movie and directed it, also deserves special comment for what he’s achieved. The film doesn’t feel low budget and the cinematography captures the stunning location really well. It’s not easy to make a film with only three actors compelling and whilst this could work well as a play, Audi-Dor’s direction makes it an intriguing character study and he gets superb performances from his actors.
Wasp isn’t due to be released until Spring 2015 and we think you should be making a note in your diary to see it now. With strong central performances, an interesting and original premise, and stunning direction it’s a film that took us by complete surprise. We’ll be keeping an eye on Audi-Dor to see what he does next and we’ll also be closely watching the careers of Simon Haycock, Hugo Bolton and Elly Condron.

The other day I had the privilege of attending an advance screening of the forthcoming movie The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. I am not a movie reviewer, so I will not offer an evaluation of the movie -- other than to say that it is superb.
What particularly interests me is the story itself and the extraordinary range of deeply important issues it poses. The Imitation Game traces the real-life tale of Alan Turing, the brilliant and highly idiosyncratic British scientist and philosopher whose secret contributions during World War II saved the lives of an estimated 14 million individuals by enabling the Allies to win the war much sooner than would otherwise have been possible.
Still in his twenties, Turing led a small cohort of odd-ball cryptographers in a top secret effort to discover the secret of the Nazis' Enigma machine. It was through the use of this machine that the Nazis were able to send encrypted messages to their forces throughout the world. It was, at the time, the most effective and unbreakable code ever invented.
Operating out of Hut 8 in Bletchley Park, Turing's genius and persistence enabled him to invent what was essentially the world's first computer, which finally broke the secrets of the Enigma machine. Although other Allied nations were trying with dogged determination to achieve this outcome, only Turing succeeded.
But that was only the beginning. Even after breaking the Nazi code, the question arose of what to do with this secret knowledge. The goal was not just to break the code, but to use the information gained in order to thwart the Nazi war effort. This had to be done carefully and selectively, because if the Nazis realized that the English had penetrated their code they would simply stop using the Enigma machine.
Thus, to use their knowledge to best effect, the English had to exercise restraint. They could use the decoded information only in carefully selected circumstances. Frequently, they would have to forego its use and permit the Nazis to succeed in battles in order to protect what was now their secret weapon. Turing and his crew played a central role in figuring out how to use the information without giving away their secret.
With end of the war, the British decided to keep secret the fact that they had broken the Nazi code. This was strategic. Other nations, thinking that the Enigma machine was unbreakable, used it themselves for decades after World War II, without realizing that the British could decode their messages. Turning's extraordinary achievement therefore remained locked away in the national security closet in order to leave the British with this advantage.
Alan Turing was in the closet in another way, as well. He was a homosexual. A few years after World War II ended, he was arrested for gross indecency -- otherwise known as homosexual conduct. Although perhaps the greatest hero of World War II, Turing could not reveal the secret of his contribution. He was convicted and, rather than spend two years in prison, accepted the penalty chemical castration, a common punish for homosexuals under British law. The belief at the time was that homosexuality was a mental illness that could be "treated" in this manner.
Suffering from the ill effects of this barbarous medication, Alan Turing committed suicide in 1952, with his contributions to Western civilization still unknown. It remained so for almost half-a-century. In 2009, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown finally issued a public apology for the "appalling" treatment of the man who, according to Winston Churchill, had made "the single biggest contribution to Allied victory in the war against Nazi Germany."
This is a deeply moving and powerful story. The Imitation Game , which opens in theaters in December, is a stunning movie.

U ranim danima štrajka Mark Ashton (Ben Schnetzer), mladi gej aktivist u Londonu nagovara nekolicinu svojih gay prijatelja da daju podršku rudarima.
Pride is a 2014 British LGBT-related historical comedy-drama film written by Stephen Beresford and directed by Matthew Warchus. It was screened as part of the Directors' Fortnight section of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Queer Palm award. Writer Stephen Beresford said a stage musical adaptation involving director Matthew Warchus was being planned.
Based on a true story, the film depicts a group of lesbian and gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the British miners' strike in 1984, at the outset of what would become the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign. The National Union of Mineworkers was reluctant to accept the group's support due to the union's public relations' worries about being openly associated with a gay group, so the activists instead decided to take their donations directly to Onllwyn, a small mining village in Wales, resulting in an alliance between the two communities. The alliance was unlike any seen before but was successful.
“Pride” is brilliantly entertaining just as it is, so I trust that no one connected with the film will be insulted if I say that, despite the existence of shows with similarly stirring themes, like “Billy Elliot” and “Kinky Boots,” the story would make a terrific musical. In truth, the movie is halfway there already. Beresford and the director, Matthew Warchus, bracket the tale with gay-pride marches in London in 1984 and 1985, but, in general, the picture is short on politics and historical context (there’s almost nothing about the strike itself) and long on comedy, sentiment, and music. As the Londoners imagine entering a mining town, they joke about what they might say to the inhabitants. “May I inquire about your communal baths?” is one gambit. But they sober up when they meet the strikers, who are defiant but very much in need of help. These early meetings have the wariness of two species confronting each other in a marsh. Some of the younger miners, disgusted, want nothing to do with the gays. An elderly woman with a soft face musters her courage and says to a lesbian, “That can’t be true, can it? You’re all . . . vegetarians?” The Londoners are smart, self-deprecating, ironic, and sometimes furious about their own wounds; the miners and their wives and widows can be hearty, even cheery, but, just below the surface, they carry a lifelong bitterness. The two groups are fused by anger and divided by virtually everything else. - DAVID DENBY in The New Yorker

AKA is a 2002 drama film, the first by director and writer Duncan Roy. The film is set in the late 1970s in Britain and deals with the story of Dean, an 18-year-old boy who assumes another identity in order to enter high society. Dean then meets David, an older gay man who desires him and Benjamin, a young Texan hustler. It is largely an autobiographical account of Duncan Roy's early life.

There is next to nothing in the way of a story contained in Baby. The film is based almost exclusively around the hypnotic visuals and sound, and it is very effective. Some of the shots set outside the swimming pool are a bit cliched (the pot smoking), yukky (the womans armpit hair - ugh!), or just plain indecipherable (the women in the street hitting him with inflatable phalluses), but when the boy goes swimming it's hard to tear your eyes away. It's a very sexual piece and offers no concrete questions or answers for anything but it's certainly worth a few minutes of your time.

Both a visual flashback and a telling of the life and birth of the alter ego that was David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust.
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is arguably the most important album in the mind-blowing career of David Bowie. Released in 1972, it's the record that set the mercurial musician on course to becoming one of the best-known pop stars on the planet. In just over a year, Bowie's messianic Martian invaded the minds of the nation's youth with a killer combination of extraterrestrial rock 'n' roll and outrageous sexuality, all delivered in high-heeled boots, multi-coloured dresses and extravagant make-up. In Bowie's own words, Ziggy was 'a cross between Nijinsky and Woolworths', but this unlikely culture clash worked - Ziggy turned Bowie into stardust.
This documentary tells the story of how Bowie arrived at one of the most iconic creations in the history of pop music. The songs, the hairstyles, the fashion and the theatrical stage presentation that merged together to turn David Bowie into the biggest craze since the Beatles. Ziggy's instant success gave the impression that he was the perfectly-planned pop star. But, as the film reveals, it had been a momentous struggle for David Bowie to hit on just the right formula that would take him to the top.
Narrated by fan Jarvis Cocker, it reveals Bowie's mission to the stars through the musicians and colleagues who helped him in his unwavering quest for fame - a musical voyage that led Bowie to doubt his true identity, eventually forcing the sudden demise of his alien alter ego, Ziggy.
Contributors include Trevor Bolder (bass player, Spiders from Mars), Woody Woodmansey (drummer, Spider from Mars), Mike Garson (Spiders' keyboardist), Suzi Ronson (Mick Ronson's widow, who gave Bowie that haircut), Ken Scott (producer), Elton John (contemporary and fan), Lindsay Kemp (Bowie's mime teacher), Leee Black Childers (worked for Mainman, Bowie's production company), Cherry Vanilla (Bowie's PA/press officer), George Underwood (Bowie's friend), Mick Rock (Ziggy's official photographer), Steve Harley, Marc Almond, Holly Johnson, Peter Hook, Jon Savage, Peter Doggett and Dylan Jones

Set in the economically depressed England of today, Cal is a startling sequel to the hit 2009 film, Shank.
20 year-old Cal returns from France to Britain after receiving news that his mother is ill. He finds his home city of Bristol facing hard times, with poverty and crime on the rise and rioting and looting rife. Now openly gay, Cal clashes with his homophobic mother and alcoholic, predatory aunt. Things soon turn around upon meeting a cute, young student who needs his help. However, Cal’s act of kindness brings about a whole lot of trouble and a race against time to make peace with his mother and escape his home town. An intense, dark and intelligent feature bringing Cal’s story bang up-to-date.

Christian Martin is one of the writers and directors of gay cinema hits Shank and Release. His latest offering is Bufferingwhich shows the extraordinary things a couple will do to clear their debt. The movie has just been released on DVD through TLA Releasing. We caught up with Christian to talk about the movie and find out what else he’s got in the pipeline. How are you today?
Exhausted to be brutally honest – just returned home from a gruelling 14 hour shoot on my next film. We’re in the third week of a four week shoot and it’s taking it’s toll on me! Rain stopped play yesterday – coupled with a raid on my house from 20 Armed Response Policemen waving loaded guns in my face and arresting me and my co-director, the director of photography as well as our grip followed by a phalanx of press descending on my house to interview me about it – whilst trying to control a crew and schedule – it has been quite fatiguing to say the least! Buffering has just come out on DVD. Tell us about the movie.
It’s an attempt by myself and co-writer/director Darren Flaxstone to try and make a film that was both relevant and a little lighter hearted in comparison to our previous films Shank and Release. I was fascinated to read about the increasingly popular fundraising route that certain enterprising people have taken by making their own amateur pornography and selling it online. The credit crunch and the familiar scene of a couple having overextended on their credit cards and being imperilled by debt turning to porn formed the basis of a good idea from which we could hopefully have some fun, make a comment and entertain all in one movie. We might not all be earning bankers’s bonuses but there’s a lot of wankers out there! Where did the inspiration for Buffering come from?
Looking at my own credit card debt, contemplating what I would do to pay it all off if I was 20 years younger! I simply wanted to make something a little less intense than the previous two films that still has something to say whilst being a little ridiculous in places but with heart as well.
I was obviously on the money somewhere in my thinking as a Hollywood writer has approached me about a re-write for the USA with a straight couple as the lead characters as opposed to a gay couple. What was your intention when you set out to make the film?
To quite simply have some fun and try something different, to develop as a film maker into a genre that is diametrically opposed to previous films that I have made. To work with a wider range of talented people – like the band that collaborated with us by writing an ace soundtrack – NANCY – and to make a British comedy and show we have a sense of humour! Tell us about the casting process – how easy was that for you?
We have a great stalwart cast member who always appears in our films, Bernie Hodges, he’s a local actor who is increasingly difficult to book because his workload has increased considerably in recent years but we got him on board first. He then casts the films for us. Auditions were held and cast were selected. It’s difficult with low budget because you think big and then have to work backwards because of budget but it’s always great to find new talent and hopefully give them a break. It wasn’t easy but we got there in the end. What was the atmosphere like on set during shooting?
Surprisingly relaxed actually. I had negotiated with another film that was finishing to buy their sets and adapt them for our use and to rent the studio space that they had booked. Being in a studio made everything so much easier and consequently more relaxed. I think everyone on the crew shared the guilty secret of knowing exactly the sites we were alluding to in the film where gay or straight couples could upload their clips and sell them for other people’s self gratification! I dare say some of the crew may have even done it! How did Buffering differ to your previous movies Release and Shank? Buffering is a 180 change of direction. A comedy is not only hard to write but enormously challenging to get right tonally. I think we’ve ended up with a good example of a hybrid of the two – a drama and a comedy – a dramedy if you like! The material could so easily have pulled me back towards drama and indeed I found it difficult to go in the other direction but Darren (my co-writer) was a good helmsman navigating these un-chartered waters for both of us. When you start to look at how ridiculous life can be it becomes easier to commit ideas to paper and subsequently a script. Carry On films don’t necessarily appeal to me but it’s surprising how much “carry on” there is inside of all of us regardless – we are all conditioned to enjoy a double entendre from time to time. What would you like audiences to take away from the movie?
Hope that we can all get through tough times with a little imagination and energy! A sense that they saw something that was entertaining but that also said something about where we are all at in this moment of economic chaos that not even bankers or politicians can analyse correctly or solve as a problem. I have been lucky enough to go to a few festivals and view it with audiences and the response has been very very positive to the film. What’s coming up next for you?
We have one week to go on a new film about youth unemployment, set against the backdrop of the 99% er’s the riots in Bristol and the return of a character from our film Shank. The film’s called Cal and stars Wayne Virgo, Daniel Brocklebank, Emily Corcoran and a stunning newcomer Tom Payne as well as the irrepressible Bernie Hodges. I agonized over what to do after Buffering and have returned to a socio-economic-realist drama as my next project. I’m having a great time pairing with collaborator Jack O’Dowd on this one. I also have a small short coming out which I have just completed called Contracted which is part of series I am doing (the first of which was the award winning Fucked directed by Jack O’Dowd which is on the dvd for Buffering). Contracted is a rye look at the world of Hollywood actor’s contracts and the obligations contained therein that are intended to keep a lid on actor’s private lives and sexual preferences. It’s not going to go down well with the Scientologists that’s for sure. We have a great cast in Eleanor Gecks and John Mason who steal the show as our showbiz/Hollywood couple coupled with an hilarious and viciously tongued PR man played by Garry Summers. How will you be spending Christmas this year?
Starting the edit on Cal with Jack and then relaxing with my family. I am blessed with 4 nieces and a nephew who entertain us all with their antics and their enthusiasm for Christmas. We are all descending on my parents – a houseful of over 14 of us – it’s a riot. Thankfully we treat ourselves to having catering and waitering staff in to do Christmas day! Then in January it’s off to Cape Town to stay with friends and research and start writing my next script which is set in a township just outside of Cape Town.

Steve knows he’s straight, but under the water at his local swimming pool he feels gay. Will he tell his ex-girlfriend the whole truth?
One of the themes in the film explores the difference of truth between what Steve says and what Steve actually does. This layer is amplified when Steve is talking to his ex-girlfriend about the amazing incident that changed in him. She is the one person he doesn’t want to tell, but at the same time she is the only person he can tell. I hope the chosen story form of dividing the visuals and audio helps to illustrate the various layers in Steve and Ruth’s story. The aim was to give the audience a more complex understanding of what Steve is actually feeling inside and what this change in his identity means to him.
