It has been a long time since I watched such an intense film like this. Actually, to me, it is the most thrilling gay film until now I have ever watched.

From the beginning of the film, viewers will witness a man named Tom who came to the funeral of someone. Bit by bit we understand that was the funeral of a man named Guillaume who Tom had a vauge relationship with. Things are more weird when one night Tom was threatened by Guillaume's brother, Francis, and viewers became more and more irritated and curious to find out what roles of Francis and Tom are exactly and why Guillaume and Francis' mother seems to be such an incomprehensible woman.

 

Watching the film, viewers will be thrilled by the paradox and obstacle of one life in his own thought. Life is full of lies. People often define them as white lies to make things less serious and repairable, but do they know they are just 'darker', more dangerous to others and even themselves when they cannot escape from their tragedy of having to keep something that they think they should. The film is an objective reflection of what humans may seem to be and what they really are. However, the film also sheds light on the long-lasting truth that there is no pure evil and complete kindness. The question lies in how much evilness one may turn to and in what aspects may one find the goodness in others.

In the end, when acceptance no longer exists and even tolerance does not remain any more, people have to take steps, but those steps, again in an ironical way, may or may not lead to what they forecast.

In a thousand times they ask what they should do. In a million times they think and answer that they do not know. In the film, Tom does not ask but he acts. He does think but his action reveals to us that there is always a paradox of emotions, feelings and people often use force to suppress their loneliness, just to make things harder and more painful.

Throughout the film, every character is so real, so truthful, so artistic, not in the words they say but in the eyes the audiences may observe. Their actions are the directs results of a very long battle of their mind and their heart, of what they should do and can do, of what choices they think they have in such a sarcastic situation. The film builds an objective reflection of truth and lies, of happiness and sorrow, of violence and tenderness, both in a physcial and emotional way.

In my own opinion, those who have experieced similar contexts will find their own thoughts in the characters', and those who want to love and treasure the love towards human and life, they should watch this film, just to understand the paradox of human life, both in their actions and thinking.

The Imitation Game ( Igra kodova) je dirljiva biografska priča o Alanu Turingu, jednom od najvećih umova 20. vijeka, čovjeku koji je spasio milione ljudskih života u II svjetskom ratu tako što dešifrovao njemačke komunikacije kriptovane uz pomoć skoro neprobojne mašine za kodiranje pod tajnim nazivom "ENIGMA".
Britanci su kao i mnoge druge zemlje pritisnute Hitlerovom razarujećom ratnom mašinerijom pokušavali dešifrovati njemačke vojne poruke kako bi stekli prednost u ratu. Bilo je potrebno naći način da se na vrijeme saznaju svi Njemački ratni planovi, ali Enigmu nisu mogli razbiti sve dok se nije pojavio matematičar Alan Touring koji je svojom genijalnošću uspio napraviti mašinu koja je provaljivala njemačke kodove.
Alan Touring je svoju strast prema rješavanju matematičkih problema stavio ispred sopstvene seksualnosti koja je uz to bila kažnjiva prema Britanskim zakonima.

Nakon završetka rata Britanska vlada je odlučila zadržati sve u tajnosti i uništila je svaki trag o postojanju Turingove mašine koja je razbila Njemačku "Enigmu", čime je onemogućeno da se njenom genijalnom tvorcu oda zasluženo istorijsko priznanje.
Priča je izašla u javnosti kada je Alan Touring 1952. godine uhapšen zbog homoseksualnosti i osuđen na hemijsku kastraciju, koja je na kraju dovela do samoubistva ovog genijalnog matematičara i heroja u jednom od najrazornijih ratova evropskog kontinenta.
Alan Touring ni nakon smrti nije doživio javnu rehabilitaciju i počast barem na nivou nacionalnog junaka, ako već ne na nivou mislioca koji je zadužio čovječanstvo. Homofobija britanskog društva tog doba ga je otrgnula od stvaralaštva i gurnula u beskrajnu tišinu, koja je prekinuta tek 2009. godine. Tadašnji britanski premijer Gordon Brown službeno se javno izvinuo za sve užasne nepravde učinjene Alanu Turingu.
Alan Touring bi zauvjek ostao pominjan samo u naučnim krugovima kao začetnik modernog računarstva i digitalne tehnologije bez koje bi danas skoro nemoguće bilo zamisliti napredak ljudske civilizacije, bez ikakvog priznanja za svoj rad koji je spasio milione života da sticajem okolnosti nije postao žrtva jednog od najokrutnijeg anti gay zakona iz 1885. godine po kojem je bilo moguće kazniti čovjeka samo zato što je homoseksualac. Po tom zakonu je stradalo 49000 ljudi u Velikoj Britaniji. Biti gej u to doba značilo je biti kažnjavanjan zatvorom, javnim sramoćenjem, oduzimanjem svih ljudskih i građanskih prava ili prisiljavanjem na hemijsku kastraciju.
Zakon je ukinut 1963. godine ali do današnjeg dana nije ukinita presuda Alanu Turinu za zločin protiv javnog morala.
Alan Turing je zato postao upisan u istorijske knjige kao primjer zašto je potrebna borba za ljudska prava.

U mnogim državama pa i ovim našim balkanskim homofobija društva tjera homoseksualce na ćutnju. Iako smo svjesni da su oko nas mnogi važnji ljudi, doktori, umjetnici, naučnici, političari ili naprosto naše prve komšije i prijatelji homoseksualci društvena homofobija je u stanju da ih zauvjek ušutka i obespravi na svaki pomen o seksualnoj orjentaciji.

Upoznao sam čovjeka kojeg je strah od odbacivanja i sramoćenja natjerao da odustane od životne karijere i povuče se u svoj skriveni svjet. Pričao mi je kako je na poslovne sastanke išao sa strahom da će ako mu se otkrije da je gej doživjeti porugu, odbacivanje i psihičku torturu. Iako je bio uspješan u poslu i poštovan kao čovjek, sopstveni strah ga je natjerao da se povuče.
Razlog za taj strah, koliko god mnogima zvučao bezrazložno, leži u sudbini Alana Turinga, ali i sudbini mnogih ljudi koji su zbog svoje seksualnosti doživjeli slično poniženje.
Zato bi svako društvo u svojim školskim knjigama trebalo da ima upisano njegovo ime kao opomenu koliko je lako osuditi nekoga samo zato što je drugačiji iako vrlo često biti drugačiji znači biti sposoban vidjeti svjet oko nas na poseban način i time omogućiti mnoga mala i velika djela ljudske civilizacije.

The other day I had the privilege of attending an advance screening of the forthcoming movie The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. I am not a movie reviewer, so I will not offer an evaluation of the movie -- other than to say that it is superb.

What particularly interests me is the story itself and the extraordinary range of deeply important issues it poses. The Imitation Game traces the real-life tale of Alan Turing, the brilliant and highly idiosyncratic British scientist and philosopher whose secret contributions during World War II saved the lives of an estimated 14 million individuals by enabling the Allies to win the war much sooner than would otherwise have been possible.

Still in his twenties, Turing led a small cohort of odd-ball cryptographers in a top secret effort to discover the secret of the Nazis' Enigma machine. It was through the use of this machine that the Nazis were able to send encrypted messages to their forces throughout the world. It was, at the time, the most effective and unbreakable code ever invented.

Operating out of Hut 8 in Bletchley Park, Turing's genius and persistence enabled him to invent what was essentially the world's first computer, which finally broke the secrets of the Enigma machine. Although other Allied nations were trying with dogged determination to achieve this outcome, only Turing succeeded.

But that was only the beginning. Even after breaking the Nazi code, the question arose of what to do with this secret knowledge. The goal was not just to break the code, but to use the information gained in order to thwart the Nazi war effort. This had to be done carefully and selectively, because if the Nazis realized that the English had penetrated their code they would simply stop using the Enigma machine.

Thus, to use their knowledge to best effect, the English had to exercise restraint. They could use the decoded information only in carefully selected circumstances. Frequently, they would have to forego its use and permit the Nazis to succeed in battles in order to protect what was now their secret weapon. Turing and his crew played a central role in figuring out how to use the information without giving away their secret.

With end of the war, the British decided to keep secret the fact that they had broken the Nazi code. This was strategic. Other nations, thinking that the Enigma machine was unbreakable, used it themselves for decades after World War II, without realizing that the British could decode their messages. Turning's extraordinary achievement therefore remained locked away in the national security closet in order to leave the British with this advantage.

Alan Turing was in the closet in another way, as well. He was a homosexual. A few years after World War II ended, he was arrested for gross indecency -- otherwise known as homosexual conduct. Although perhaps the greatest hero of World War II, Turing could not reveal the secret of his contribution. He was convicted and, rather than spend two years in prison, accepted the penalty chemical castration, a common punish for homosexuals under British law. The belief at the time was that homosexuality was a mental illness that could be "treated" in this manner.

Suffering from the ill effects of this barbarous medication, Alan Turing committed suicide in 1952, with his contributions to Western civilization still unknown. It remained so for almost half-a-century. In 2009, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown finally issued a public apology for the "appalling" treatment of the man who, according to Winston Churchill, had made "the single biggest contribution to Allied victory in the war against Nazi Germany."

This is a deeply moving and powerful story. The Imitation Game , which opens in theaters in December, is a stunning movie.

Stranac pored jezera  ( Stranger by lake) je francuski thriler u režiji Alain Guiraudie koji je na Kanskom festivalu 2013 dobio nagradu za režiju. Film je osvojio i Queer Palm nagradu, a takođe je prikazivan i na Toronto International Film Festivalu 2013. god.

Većina pedera i gejeva su iskusili čari kruzinga pored neke nudističke plaže na kojoj se kupaju mnogobrojni istomišljenici, radoznalci, swingeri, biseksualci, drkadžije, voajeri itd. Ukoliko ipak ima neko ko ne zna o čemu pričam neka sačeka prve tople proljetne dane i posjeti nudističu plažu, a ukoliko želite da to bude u Crnoj Gori predlažem vam Crvenu Glavicu, Adu Bojanu, Ratac ili Jaz.
Nemojte se samo sunčati i kupati nego malo prošetajte okolo plaže, a posebno predlažem da obiđete zaklonjenija mjesta, šumarke, udaljene uvalice i slično.
Velike su šanse da će te naići na razne likove koji onako napaljeno i uznevereno gledaju u vas potajno ili otvoreno drkajući kurac raznim mimikama vam davaju do znanja da žele seks sa vama ili vas otvoreno pitaju da li bi im dopustili da vam popuše kurac ili da vas prijateljski izjebu. U svakom slučaju od vaših afiniteta zavisi šta će te dalje raditi i nemojte se stidjeti šta god učinjeli. U tim trenucima budite upravo ono što želite da budete u vašim najluđim maštarijama uz koje obično drkate.
Na jednom od takvih mjesta, tamo neđe u Francuskoj na obali nekog jezera redovno dolazi i Frank, glavni lik ovog filma.
Svaki dan uredno polaže svoj bijeli peškir na plaži osmatrajući koga sve ima u okolici i pažljivo odmjeravajući one malobrojne sa kojima nije imao seks.Upoznaje Henrija, sredovječnog polu geja koji se nikada ne skida i uvjek je udaljen od ostalih nudista. Henri ga uvjek zove na piće ili na večeru ali Frenku izgleda nije do druženja sa nekim ko ga seksualno ne privlači.
Takođe upoznaje i Mišela, zgodnog muškarca srednjih godina koji djeluje baš onako muški i pomalo opasno. Naravno to je samo maska jer univerzalni Mišel obožava da se nabija na kurac kako bi povremeno razradio mušku dlakavu pičkicu.

Mišel na plaži ima i sex partnera tj. dečka sa kojim se redovno prca u okolnoj šumi.
Jedno kasno poslije podne Frank iz šume ugleda Mišela kako se kupa u jezeru sa svojim ljubavnikom. U tom trenutku Mišel uhvati nesretnog ljubavnika i udavi ga u jezeru.

Sledeći dan Frank se susreće sa Mišelom na plaži i pravi se da ne zna šta se desilo predhodni dan. Nakon kratog razgovora završe u  šumici iznad plaže gdje su uredno napunili jedan drugome guzice dok ih je jedan drkadžija posmatrao. Rodila se naravno ljubav jer seks je bio savršen. ( kod pedera seks je glavni pokazatelj zaljubljenosti:) U ovom slučaju Frenk je taj koji zove na piće i večeru, a Mišel kako to pederska pravila zahtjevaju odbija.

Šalim se naravno oko ove zaljubljenosti ali definitivno je kod promiskuitetnih pedera pravilo da sa osobom koja služi za seksualne igrice nikada ne idu na piće i da se ujutro nikada ne probude pored upotrebljenog kurca. Kod gejeva je to ipak malo drugačije, ali u suštini ponašanje je slično.

Ne bih da vam otkrijem sve do kraja, ali čitava ova priča ima nedorečen kraj i mislim da bi dodatnih desetak minuta  upotpunilo doživljaj gledanja ovog filma.
Za one koji vole malo eksplicitnije filmove siguran sam da će uživati u scenama seksa koje su snimane kao u nekim softcore pornićima.

Mene je ovaj film podsjetio na jedan događaj na nudističkoj plaži na Crvenoj Glavici. Bio je jedan čiča koji je tamo svakodnevno dolazio i kupao se na dijelu plaže na kom se ne kupaju pederi. Neke postarije gospođe su mu ponekad pravile društvo ali uglavnom je bio sam. Kako sam se početkom ljeta kupao baš na tom mjestu, a vikende provodio u obližnjem kampu mogao sam ga krišom posmatrati. Bio mi je zanimljiv način na koji komunicira sa ostalim ljudima na plaži i kako je potpuno opušten i prirodan. Iako je imao skoro 60 godina bio mi je privlačan.

Kada sam se naveče vraćao u kamp prolazeći pored njega pozovem ga na pivo. Pristane i odemo u kamp ispred šatora. Otvorimo limenke i počnemo sa pričom kako bi se bolje upoznali. Ja skinem kupaće i samo se obavijem sa peškirom, a on kada je to vidio pitao me da li bi mi smetalo da i on uradi isto jer je mnogo prijatnije nego u kupaće.
Ispričao mi je sve o bivšoj ženi, djeci, poslu , popili 3-4 piva i vidno raspoložen usred tog  str8 razgovora me pita: Jesi li kada pušio kurac?Nasmijah se i rekoh da jesam. On odgovori da nije i da nema namjeru ni da proba.
Vidim iskren je čovjek, a očito je i šta  želi pa mu rekoh da umoči kitu u pivo. Makne peškir umoči kitu u pivo i tako ja dobih pivo sa kite. Dobro je bilo:)

Stranger by the Lake (French: L'Inconnu du lac) is a 2013 French drama film directed by Alain Guiraudie. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival where Guiraudie won the award for Best Director. The film also won the Queer Palm award. It was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
During the summer, on the edge of a lake surrounded by hills and forests and far from any houses, several male bathers, mostly naturists and gay, come to sunbathe. The woods behind the beach are a place where fleeting sexual encounters take place in a promiscuous atmosphere. Each day, Franck lays his towel on the white stony beach where he gets to know Henri (whose wife has just left him) and also Michel, a good-looking man to whom he is immediately attracted. But Michel is a murderer as Franck soon finds out when one evening, from the woods which overlook the lake, he spots him drowning Pascal, his current partner. Upset and afraid but also completely under the spell of the murderer, Franck keeps what he has seen a secret, becoming an accomplice to the man he desires. He soon gives in to his advances and falls passionately in love with him, yet all the while hiding his fear in case his lover should realise that he knows exactly what he did.

Two days later, the body of the drowned man is discovered and identified. His death is considered suspicious bringing a police inspector to the scene who interrogates Franck and Michel shortly after. Franck continues to protect Michel by stating that he didn't see anything unusual on the evening the man drowned. As the inspector continues his investigation, Franck and Michel's relationship progresses, even as Franck becomes increasingly frustrated by Michel's refusal to meet him anywhere other than at the beach. Henri, with whom Franck has built up an entirely platonic relationship so far, has an intuitive understanding of what has happened over the past few days, and warns Franck about Michel: "In your shoes, I would be very scared!" Franck is afraid of course, but when his psychopathic lover arrives during the discussion, he leaves Henri for Michel and sits down next to him further along the beach.

Later on, Franck goes swimming far from shore. Henri, making the most of Franck's absence, goes to see Michel and tells him he's convinced that the recent drowning wasn't an accident, that he has realised that Michel was the killer, and that the inspector will identify the murderer sooner or later. He looks at Michel knowingly and mockingly, then stands up and says he's going to go for a walk in the woods. As he enters the woods, he casts a glance back at Michel.

Franck who is still swimming in the lake, turns around suddenly towards the beach: Michel has disappeared and Henri too. Elsewhere the beach is now deserted. Overcome with a bad feeling, Franck swims back to the beach and hastens into the woods. He sees Michel leaving a leafy bush behind which he finds Henri dying and covered in blood: Michel has slit his throat. Franck takes off his tee-shirt and tries to stop the bleeding but Henri makes him understand that it's too late and that he got what he was looking for. With Henri dead, Franck is terrified and runs off into the woods to hide. Michel follows him and chances upon the inspector, who he hits violently and stabs in the stomach with a knife. Night falls and Franck remains crouched behind a bush from where he can see the killer walk past time and again just a few yards away from him, looking for him and calling for him to show himself and saying that he needs him, needs his love and that he wants to spend the night with him. Finally, Michel goes away to look for him further in the woods: the danger seems to have passed, so Franck finally stands up and calls his lover's name, with no reply. He waits in the darkness, overcome with fear and his heart beating fast, looking into the woods and the silence.

Tom (S. Speedman) je oženjen čovjek koji otkriva da nosi virus HIV-a. Uvjeren da je zaražen u slučajnom i jedinom odnosu s muškarcem koji je imao u životu, dovodi krivca svoje nesreće u stan i uzima ga za taoca.
Svoga će zatočenika, homoseksualca Dana (J. Marsden), pustiti ukoliko krvna pretraga bude negativna. Ukoliko se pak dokaže da je riječ o neodgovornom širitelju smrtonosne bolesti, opravdano bijesni domaćin će ga ubiti.

U glavnim ulogama otmičara i taoca, James Marsden i Scott Speedman, koji su nimalo lak posao obavili na besprijekoran način. Tridesetpetmilimetarska filmska verzija s uspjehom je prikazana među na specijaliziranom Outfestu u Los Angelosu i Tribeca festivalu u New Yorku.

Predpostavljam da o potrebi da se zaštitimo kada imamo seks sa nekim neznancem nema potrebe pričati. Pameten čovjek koji vodi računa o svom zdravlju neće rizikovati da dobije HIV ili neku drugu polnu bolest zbog seksa sa nekim zgodnim frajerom. Međutim putujući po evropskim metropolama primjetio sam trend da se sve više gejeva upušta u seks bez kondoma. Od kada su pronašli one koktele koji HIV virus drže pod kontrolom mnogi gejevi kao da su se umorili od stalne priče o prevenciji i kao da ih nije briga da li će pokupiti virus ili ne. Njihov izbor, ali mnogi ljudi, a posebno biseksualci mogu doći u opasnost ako se sretnu sa takvim neodgovornim gejevima. Naivni i neiskusni lako mogu upasti u zamku "dobrog sportskog izgleda". Mnogi od njih pomisle da je momak koji tako dobro izgleda i brine o tjelu sigurno zdrav. Velika zabluda!

The 24th Day is a 2004 film starring Scott Speedman and James Marsden. The film is based on a play of the same name, written by Tony Piccirillo, who also directed the film.
Tom (Scott Speedman) and Dan (James Marsden) meet in a bar and then proceed to Tom's apartment together. While there, Dan realizes that he had been in that same apartment before.

Five years earlier, Dan and Tom had a one night stand there. According to Tom, that encounter with Dan was his first and only homosexual experience. Some years later, Tom's wife is found to be HIV positive. Despondent after receiving this diagnosis from her doctor, Tom's wife drives through a red traffic light and is killed in an ensuing collision. Subsequent to these events, medical tests reveal that Tom is also HIV positive. Tom blames himself for passing HIV on to his wife and, in turn, he blames Dan for passing the virus on to him. Reasoning that Dan, ultimately, is to blame for his wife's death, Tom devises a plan to exact revenge. He holds Dan hostage, keeping him bound and gagged to a chair in his apartment. He draws blood from Dan in order to conduct a test to determine Dan's HIV status. If Dan's test results are positive for HIV, Tom vows to kill Dan. If the results are negative, Tom agrees to release Dan unharmed. In the end, Tom returns to the apartment and lets Dan go. As Dan is leaving, Tom asks him when he had last been tested. A few moments later, he reveals that Dan's test was, in fact, positive. He decided to let Dan go because he realized that his positive status was the result of his choices which he couldn't blame on anyone else. The screen fades with Dan standing in Tom's doorway, in shock, and Tom resigned to his fate.

Manuel je usamljeni mladić koji pokušava da nađe društvo preko interneta. Upoznaje Hulia, nezaposlenog i neuglednog momka. Odlaze kod njega doma.  Početna strast i želja se pretvara u seks, a onda nastaje tajac. Znate onaj osjećaj kada vam se čini da je  neko od vas dvojice višak u krevetu. Ne zato što ne želite da zagrljeni zaspete pored njega , nego zbog straha od odbacivanja i povređivanja. Lakše je reći, bilo mi je lijepo sa tobom ali sutra idem na posao ili nešto slično, nego se otvoriti i reći nešto o sebi, nešto što će pokazati kakvi ste zaista, vaše želje i emocije. Previše smo puta bili povrijeđeni da bi pokazali sopstvenu slabost ali i muku što noći provodimo ili sami ili sa potpunim neznancima.

Da stvar bude teža pozvali ste nekog u kuću, a da ne znate ništa o njemu. Možda je običan lopov ili prevarant. Teško je biti usamljeni peder, a još teže usamljeni gej!

Film me je podsjetio na jednog prijatelja koji je prekinuo vezu prije pola godine. Pitao sam ga kako živi i da li se navikao na momački slobodnjački život? Rekao mi je nekako ovako: Trudim se, dajem sve od sebe, smijem se, pjevam, družim se sa ljudima ali ipak sam usamljen i teško mi je. Upoznao sam i neke nove ljude i imao seks sa većinom. Uostalom sada mi je sasvim sve jedno i može me imati ko god hoće. Na to sam mu odgovorio da to što ima seks sa nekim ne znači da ga taj može imati ni na koji način, osim fizički to vrijeme do svršavanja.  Nije vrijedno o tome govoriti na taj način jer seks je seks, a imati nekoga je nešto sasvim drugo.

"The Crying Game" je psihološki triler iz 1992. godine kojeg je napisao i režirao Neil Jordan. Film se bavi temama rasizma, spola, nacionalnosti i seksualnosti, a sve u pozadini nevolja u Irskoj. Radni naziv filma bio je Soldier's Wife.
Radnja filma vrti se oko iskustava glavnog protagonista Fergusa (Stephen Rea) kao člana IRA-e, njegovog kratkog, ali vrlo značajnog poznanstva s Jodyjem (Forest Whitaker) kojeg Fergusova grupa drži kao zatvorenika te njegove neočekivane romantične veze s Jodyjevom djevojkom Dil (Jaye Davidson) za koju je Fergus obećao Jodyju da će ju zaštititi. Međutim, neočekivani događaji natjerati će Fergusa da odluči što želi u budućnosti.

 

Film je bio kritički i komercijalni uspjeh, a osvojio je i prestižnu nagradu Oscar u kategoriji najboljeg originalnog scenarija.

Jeste li čuli za priču o škorpionu i žabi?
Ako niste radi se o tome da škorpion zamoli žabu da ga prebaci preko rijeke. Žaba pristane i na pola rijeke je ubode. Dok su tonuli žaba ga pita zašto je ubo otrovnom žaokom, sad će oboje umrijeti. Škorpion joj kaže: Ne mogu si pomoći, to je u mojoj prirodi.

Mene ova priča podsjetila na jednog prijatelja koji je nakon deset godina lijepe veze raskinuo.
Divio sam im se kako su tak dugo zajedno iako su varali jedan drugog. Kada sam ga pitao zašto su raskinuli, kratko je odgovorio:
- Jbga u prirodi pedera je da vole kurac, a najviše vole onaj koji nisu probali. Ima li istine u tome? Vjerovatno ima jer 90% gejeva u vezi se prepusti svojoj prirodi i zajednički upražnjavaju seks sa drugima.

"Igra plača" je kompleksan film čiji početak nas navodi da pomislimo da je tema terorizam i nasilje, ali kasnije vidimo da se radi o nečemu sasvim drugom, toleranciji, rasizmu i odnosu prema transeksualnosti i homoseksualizmu.

‘The Crying Game’ (R)

From the opening notes of Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," Neil Jordan's "The Crying Game" ventures into such exquisitely unique territory that you feel giddy from the pleasure of being allowed to travel along.

The film -- which is one of the most challenging, surprising films of the year -- begins at an Irish fairground, where a working-class English soldier named Jody (played by the great young American actor Forest Whitaker) is seduced by a foxy member of an IRA group (Miranda Richardson) and then kidnapped by her colleagues as a hostage to be exchanged with the British for one of their own.

Immediately, the prisoner strikes up a desperate relationship with his primary guard, Fergus (Stephen Rea), a dedicated but rather softhearted Irish rebel who can't help but respond emotionally to his flirtatious enemy, who at best guess has about 24 hours to live. Fergus is a man with a simple philosophy of life; he's a realist and a romantic cynic, something like the tough but honorable antiheroes Bogart used to play, and who does what he has to do -- even if it means killing Jody -- but not without conscience or humanity.

During those 24 or so hours, the two men share stories and become friends. They become, in fact, something more, like soul mates, so that when the prisoner is dispatched, Fergus takes up his life, traveling to London and tracking down Jody's girlfriend, Dil (Jaye Davidson), whose picture he had seen in the dead man's wallet. Compelled by motives that are not entirely clear (even to himself), Fergus begins to court and then fall in love with Dil.

The lovers couldn't be more star-crossed. (The producers have asked the press not to reveal just how the couple are at odds.) Suffice it to say there are definite problems, but Jordan's touch is so gracefully gentle that, against all odds, we believe in the couple's continuing relationship. In doing so, Jordan and his cast discover emotional states that I've never witnessed on the movie screen before -- delicate, ambiguous, sometimes inscrutable emotions that lift "The Crying Game" far above its thriller genre.

Just what is it about? The bartender at the Metro, the club where Jody and Dil used to go, sums it up best when he shouts out the rhetorical question, "Who knows the secrets of the human heart?" That's Jordan's turf here, his lab. And "The Crying Game" is his boldest, richest work yet. From the performances by Rea, Davidson and Whitaker, to Jordan's endlessly original script, to Anne Dudley's melancholy score, and Lyle Lovett's closing rendition of "Stand by Your Man," "The Crying Game" enthralls and amazes us. It deserves to be called great.
