Seashore (2015)

Seashore (2015)
"Beira-Mar" (original title)

Directors: Filipe Matzembacher, Marcio Reolon
Writers: Filipe Matzembacher, Marcio Reolon
Genre: Drama
Country: Brazil
Language: Portuguese
Duration: 83 min

Stars: Mateus Almada, Ariel Artur, Maurício Barcellos

Review by Michael Lyons
Think about a movie that is non-stop action: explosions, guns blazing, with a trademark wisecracking, beefcake, invariably white hetero leading man—I guess what I’m saying is, think of Age of Ultron. Then think of a film that is the exact opposite of that, one that is so subtle, where so little happens it’s difficult to say what you just saw. In the best way possible, Seashore is this film.

I should preface this review by saying that I love a good boring movie, by which I mean my choice of film sits at the latter end of the spectrum mentioned above, a film that can make a lot happen with very little action. Life, after all, is just a lot of staring blankly and feeling shitty about stuff.
Seashore is a Brazilian film about Martin and Tomaz, two young men nearing adulthood. They return to the hometown of Martin’s estranged grandfather and then, for the first three-quarters of the movie, very little happens. There’s a tension between the two as they undertake this journey, and it’s unclear why they are on it. Martin (the brooding Mateus Almada) must confront his relationship with his family’s past. Tomaz (played by the frighteningly pretty Maurício Barcellos) admits he shouldn’t even be there with his friend, but as the pieces slowly and quietly fall into place, all becomes clear.

Seashore02To say Seashore is a slow burn of a film is an understatement. The feature hands out little tidbits, glimpses of the character’s lives and motivations, jealously. Between these few moments, the characters muddle through friendships, they drink, they wander around town. Life is presented as a wasteland of mundane, melancholy nothingness with the rare moment of warmth and connection. The tension in the audience was palpable as the film continued, and at the climatic moment it felt like a tightly wound spring had uncoiled. This wasn’t to the taste of all, as we had a few walkouts—hilariously, about 90 percent in, just before the film took a gay turn. The main criticism I heard as the audience filtered out, and indeed from my film companion, was that the film was too slow.

To me, however, this is Seashore’s ultimate success; aside from exquisite cinematography, the film’s dynamics build so slowly, almost tortuously, that there’s a real sense of accomplishment in the end. It’s like watching a tide come in inch by inch. Even though it’s agonizingly slow, there’s something raw and powerful about it, and it feels wonderful to let it simply wash over you.

Uglavnom nađu izgovore zbog posla, škole i li nešto drugo I jednostavno odu.

Short after facing the failure of an attempt to rescue a drowning man, Donato meets Konrad, friend of the victim. Motivated by the circumstances, Donato decides to begin a new life in Berlin, but pieces of his past are coming after him.

Beautiful, yet dull
20 May 2014 | by Not Jim (Brasil) – IMDB
Futuro Beach (2014)The thing that struck me the most about this movie is how beautiful it is, and I mean literally, aesthetically. Not only is the scenery gorgeous, but also its camera work is outstanding: Praia do Futuro's shots are absolutely amazing, most scenes could be made into pictures to be hung on the walls of an art gallery - there could probably be a whole exposition just made with screenshots of this movie.
The film's appeal, however, doesn't go much beyond that. Its plot had potential, the trailer made it seem like it would be intense and deeply emotional, yet the whole story is quite dull, with some unclear or poorly explained parts and underdeveloped dialogue. The characters don't lack depth per se, but their personalities were rather shallowly explored, perhaps hindered by the lack of vocal expression or by the stumbling plot.

Futuro Beach (2014)Contrarily to what a review I read (in another website) suggested, I did not feel like this movie was too cliché-ridden, and the unoriginal moves were fairly understandable, as they could be justified by either the situation in which they were inserted or the characters' psyche. Yet, I feel the innovative elements were obscured by the overall dephtlessness of the whole production and great ideas and quotes were lost in senselessness and barely-existent dialogue.

This is definitely not a bad movie, it was just not enough to touch or affect me in any way.

"Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho" (original title)

Director: Daniel Ribeiro
Writer: Daniel Ribeiro (script)
Genre: Drama
Country: Brazil
Language: Portuguese
Year: 2014
Duration: 95 min

Stars: Ghilherme Lobo, Fabio Audi, Tess Amorim, Selma Egrei, Eucir de Souza

Jay Weissberg on Variety.Com

The-Way-He-Looks-2Everyone will root for the two teen protags in Daniel Ribeiro’s sweet gay coming-of-age debut, “The Way He Looks,” since the boys are so likable and their route to first love has an undeniably touching quality. Centered on a blind high schooler chomping at the bit for independence while discovering his sexuality, the pic has genuine appeal, though in truth the script and direction are little more than average. However, its affirmative stance could be vitally formative for gay teens, and Berlin’s Teddy Award, plus Fipresci’s Panorama nod, should open doors to niche release worldwide.

The-Way-He-Looks-5Ribeiro first floated the story in his short “I Don’t Want to Go Back Alone,” made expressly to raise funding for the feature. Leonardo (Ghilherme Lobo), blind from birth, is largely well integrated into his school in Sao Paulo, though a few bullying kids occasionally make life unpleasant. His wisecracking best friend, Giovana (Tess Amorim), vigilantly looks out for him even though he’s blithely unaware of the torch she carries. Then new kid Gabriel (Fabio Audi) arrives in class, a sudden object of interest for all the girls. Leonardo is intrigued, Gabriel solicitous. Soon they’re hanging out together, much to Giovana’s fury, since she feels shut out, no longer the sole caretaker to her BFF.

The-Way-He-Looks-7Concurrent with the boys’ deepening friendship is Leonardo’s increasing frustration with his overprotective parents; in this, Ribeiro errs by making them behave as if their son’s been blind for just a few years rather than his entire life. Mom (Lucia Romano) in particular is reluctant to let Leonardo remain alone in the house even for an afternoon; Dad (Eucir de Souza), in a nice speech, is more supportive of his son’s interest in study-abroad programs, wanting to be sure his yearning for independence stems from the right reasons.

Most of the dialogue feels recycled from countless teen pics, and were this a film about a blind boy falling in love with a girl, there’d be nothing to make it stand out. The-Way-He-Looks-99But this is a gay story, done with tenderness and capturing the hesitancy of expressing affection when rejection can have ugly consequences. Had “The Way He Looks” been made 20 years ago, it would be hard to overestimate the impact it could have had on gay teens desperate for this sort of positive representation; although the field has expanded somewhat recently, this could still be a meaningful catalyst in boosting confidence and self-worth for those struggling to come out.

Ribeiro, who won the Crystal Bear in 2008 with “You, Me and Him,” includes a few visually pleasing setpieces, such as a scene of Gabriel teaching Leonardo to dance. Otherwise, lensing is professional in a standard way, carefully ensuring that the filtered lighting sympathetically bathes everyone in a cool attractive glow. Unexpected musical choices feel just right.

Have you ever felt alone even though you are surrounded by people?
solo2Solo, a movie directed and written by Ana Maria Saad and Geison Ferreira, talks about loneliness, which, contrary to what most people think has got nothing to do with being alone but rather with a feeling of emptiness and solitude, even when in other people´s company. That sensation can turn into something really bad if their reasons are not identified and eliminated.
Geison Ferreira, who came up with the idea of the movie, believed during his childhood and adolescence that to be someone it was necessary to be anyone but him. The low self-esteem – resulted from the maltreatment he suffered from people who were supposed to give him love and care – made him engaged in isolation behavior and he started to believe he was the worst person on Earth. Watching films gave him comfort, as he realized that “a film can be someone´s best friend, because it shows possibilities in life without being judgemental. No right or wrong”. He then became aware of what loneliness was and discovered the beauty of being unique, learning that moments of isolation are necessary for self knowledge and personal growth, and that doesn´t have to be sad and bad.

solo3Solo shows that facing yourself is not an easy task. Sometimes, we choose the easy way out through shallow relationships that take us far from our inner selves. However, in such moments, the other can be the one who throws light in the darkness that needs to be explored. Those “catch-ups” renovate us. We need to be aware as they may be around us, especially because loneliness can result from every day superficial relations.
Are we not seeing those especial beings that cross our ways because we can´t even see our real selves?

Short films don't always get the attention they deserve on some audience review sites, or from audiences in general, but often a short film can do in a matter of minutes something more entertaining and expansive than a feature film of much longer length. I feel that this film is such a work - the feelings, emotions, and desires of both of the characters are portrayed in both covert and overt ways, along with the joy, challenge and, at times, awkwardness of each young man's exploration of sex, sexuality and sexual preference. Simultaneously both frank and direct, and humorous and tender, the situation, action and interaction, plot and climax of the film are all developed in a way that was, for me, extremely entertaining and enjoyable. I look forward to further work from those involved with this film, which was screened in the 2008 Frameline LGBT Film Festival in San Francisco, as part of the "Worldy Affairs" program of short films.

otemponaopara1qt9_thumb[1]Cazuza – O Tempo Nao Pára (Cazuza – Time Doesn’t Stop) is a 2004 Brazilian movie about the life of singer Cazuza. The film is directed by Walter Carvalho and Sandra Werneck. It stars Daniel de Oliveira as Cazuza. The film is based on the book by Cazuza’s mother, Lucia Araujo. Cazuza – O Tempo Nao Pára won a best actor award from the Sao Paulo Association of Art Critics Awards. Agenor Miranda Araújo Neto, better known as Cazuza (4 April 1958 – 7 July 1990) was a Brazilian composer, singer and poet, born in Rio de Janeiro.
otemponaopara0xb6_thumbAlong with Raul Seixas, Renato Russo and Os Mutantes, Cazuza is considered one of the best exponents of Brazilian rock music. In 1989, he admitted publicly for the first time that he had AIDS and released his last album: Burguesia. Cazuza was openly bisexual but was not active in the gay movement. However his openness about being a person with AIDS helped to change public perceptions and attitudes about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

otemponaopara2wu0_thumb[1]Cazuza died in Rio de Janeiro on July 7, 1990 at the age of 31 from an AIDS related illness. He was buried at the Cemitério Sao Joao Batista Botafogo, in Rio de Janeiro. Cazuza’s mother set up the Viva Cazuza Society (Sociedade Viva Cazuza), a charity which sponsors AIDS prevention and provides a home for HIV-positive children.
The movie was one of the most successful of the year in Brazil.
Focusing on Cazuza’s personal life, the film chronicles his early career, his subsequent success, his drug use and his promiscuous lifestyle. It starts out in the early 1980s in Rio de Janeiro, showing his usual day-to-day life until he joins the band which would become Barao Vermelho. It then shows the band’s rise to fame and its frequent “mutinies” which led him to pursue a solo career. Later, it depicts his struggle against the AIDS virus and his final days. c-fi_thumb[1]

os3201114The college students Cazé (Gabriel Godoy), Rafael (Victor Mendes) and Camila (Juliana Schalch) meet each other in a party in São Paulo and they immediately become best friends. Rafael and Camila move to the old apartment rented by Cazé and Camila creates rules for their relationship making them promise that they would never date her.
Rafael has a crush on Camila but he accepts her rules. However, he discovers that Camila and Cazé are sleeping together but he stays with them. When they graduate, Rafael decides to move to Rio de Janeiro to work as editor. However, the trio of friends is invited to participate in a reality show by Guilherme in a marketing campaign to sell products. They decide to simulate a threesome and their lives become a farce, hiding the truth about the feelings of Rafael and their apartment becomes a stage, affecting their relationship.
In 1962, François Truffaut made the bold "Jules et Jim" with an unconventional love story and Jeanne Moreau performing a character ahead of time.
In 2011, the director Nando Olival made "Os 3", with a conventional love story of unrequited love and a well-behaved and coward threesome. The story is pointless and silly, and the character Barbara is absolutely misplaced in the plot. The good point is the performances and the chemistry of the coquette Juliana Schalch, Victor Mendes and Gabriel Godoy. My vote is five.

Do-Começo-ao-fim-From-Beginning-to-End-starring-Joao-Gabriel-Vasconcellos-and-Rafael-Cardoso17Inače film je nabijen emocijama, ljubavnim scenama i erotikom kojoj svakako doprinose dva sjajna glumca Rafael Cardoso i Joa~o Gabriel Vasconcellos.

DSC_0093From Beginning to End (Portuguese: Do Começo ao Fim) is a 2009 Brazilian drama film that premiered on November 27, 2009, starring Fábio Assunção, Júlia Lemmertz, Gabriel Kaufmann, Lucas Cotrim, João Gabriel Vasconcellos and Rafael Cardoso.

The film is considered low budget, not exceeding 2 million. Aluizio Abranches, creator and director of the film, took his idea to many entrepreneurs, some of them even suggested that it should be a relationship between a brother and sister or heterosexual, but Abranches was true to his idea and did not give up on it, until he got sponsorship from a small producer Marco Nanini.

The film's director claims it is not intended in any way to raise flags. Although the film deals with two types of relationships that are often considered "taboo" (homosexuality and incest), Abranches said that his only intention was to show a love story, regardless of conditions.

1986 - Thomás is born with his eyes closed, and he does not open them for several weeks following the birth. Julieta, his mother, is unconcerned, believing that when Thomás is ready and wants to open his eyes, he will. These events instill a strong belief in free will in young Thomás. One day, seemingly out of nowhere, Thomás opens his eyes, apparently to look directly at his five-year-old brother Francisco.
1992 - Julieta is a wife and a loving mother, working in a hospital emergency department. Her free-spirited youngest son, Thomás, is the product of her marriage to her second husband Alexandre. Pedro, her first husband and father of her eldest son Francisco, lives in Argentina. Pedro and Juliet remain good friends. During childhood, Francisco and Thomás are very close, perhaps too close according to Pedro, with whom they spend a summer in Buenos Aires.
2008 - Years later, when Francisco is 27 and Thomás 22, Julieta dies. The brothers become lovers and an unusual love story ensues.

Do-Começo-ao-fim-From-Beginning-to-End-starring-Joao-Gabriel-Vasconcellos-and-Rafael-Cardoso16Even though the subject matter may repel some, as the film begins, "From Begining to end" immediately immerses the viewer into the family life of brothers Thomas and Francisco. This Brazilian import is fearless and daring in many ways as its touches on some very taboo subject matters. It slowly creeps up to you, but once this drama sees the boys as grown men, it takes a very nostalgic mood. There is a very haunting aspect to this film that will leave you lulled and wanting more. There is also a certain amount of sadness eminent from the fantastic performances from Rafael Cardoso and Joa~o Gabriel Vasconcellos. Both these men light up the screen, and their chemistry was incendiary with a very fierce dynamic relationship that takes twists and turns in many directions but ultimately leaves you yearning for what was once between them. The film is pretty much about life changes and how some of the best times are hard to let go as mere memories. Both brothers, in their own way, must deal with life's changes and its unexpectedness. Very poetic and always eloquent in its storytelling, dealing with such difficult subject matter was flawlessly handled sensitively in the very capable hands of Aluisio Abranches. Brazil should be proud to have this film. It represents very well the beautiful people of Brazil, their culture and it give you great insight of a culture that is filled with traditions as well as strong family and community ties.

Description:

Zamolim druga da mi pričuva stvari i odem u WC. Pišam , a pored mene policajac.
Kasnije u vozu sam vidio policajca.
Nisam ga nikad više vidio, a i nevolim takve igre!

Description:

Zgodan, lijep, sexy, muževan, zaljubljen i zbunjen. Komplikovana, zbunjujuća i teška.

Naprosto klasični pederi me nikad nisu mnogo privlačili.

The premise of Possible Loves is so simple that I defy anyone not to be familiar with it. What would occur if just one event in time had turned out differently?
Carlos (Murilo Benicio) is waiting for his college girlfriend at a Rio de Janeiro cinema. The film interweaves what will happen to him 15 years hence, depending on whether she turns up or not (how anyone could possibly fail to turn up for the drop-dead gorgeous Benicio is beyond me).
Copy picture
In the first strand, his date Julia (Carolina Ferraz) inexplicably fails to show and so he goes on to marry Maria (Irene Ravache) and settle into a tired and childless marriage, only to find a chance meeting with Julia rekindles old flames and makes him reassess his life.
In the second scenario, Julia does show and he goes on to wed and father a son with her, although by the time we catch up with him some 15 years on he has left her for male friend, Pedro (Emilio de Mello), whom he met at football practice. Much, however, remains unresolved and this storyline follows Carlos in his attempt to define his sexuality once and for all.
In the third and most engaging incidence, Julia fails to make the date and we hook up with him again as a thirtysomething, who has never left home and is still playing the field, like a student. He embarks upon a series of crazy attempts to meet Miss Perfect and, through a twist of fate, meets up with Julia, who in this reality is a slightly off-the-wall, ditzy artist. The question is, will he be able to commit?
Director Sandra Werneck carefully intertwines the threads in a convincing manner. This is no Sliding Doors - you won't find contrived situations where the various alternate realities pass by themselves - but like that film, it is engaging and likeable.

Benicio plays each of the subtly different Carloses superbly and is as adept at the role of a slightly stuffy accountant, as he is in party-animal and father mode. Ferraz, too, makes light work of the split personalities she has to adopt. Carlos's mother (Beth Goulart) is also outstanding, managing to be at once immensely likeable, yet still keeping an edge of superiority against which he must rebel.
The film does require you to suspend your disbelief. After all, it is unlikely that on the one hand you would come out as a homosexual, yet on the other be seemingly confident in your heterosexuality as to show no leanings in that direction. But this is a minor gripe.
Overall, a feelgood romantic comedy which, while not played for laughs, delivers several, and manages to be thought-provoking as well. It is a consummate piece of directing from a woman of whom I am sure we will hear a lot more of in the future.
