Tarik El Hob (2001) aka The Road To Love

Tarik El Hob (2001)
Director: Rémi LangeScenario: Rémi Lange, Antoine ParlebasGenre: DramaCountry: FranceYear: 2001Duration: 70 min
Rating: 7.3/10

Actors: Karim Tarek, Sihem Benamoune, Abdellah Taia, Mustapha Khaddar, Farid Tali, Mehdi Jouhar, Roschdy El Glaoui, Riyad Echahi, Zakariya Gouram

Description:

( ukoliko ih imate!)
The story of an Arab student in Paris who discovers his homosexuality while working on a video project for his sociology class, Rémi Lange's ''Road to Love'' doesn't add much to the coming-out genre, as it has been established in countless Sundance competition films and made-for-television movies.
The student, Karim (Karim Tarek), is living in a seventh-floor walk-up with his doting girlfriend, Sihem (Sihem Benamoune), when he decides to make a documentary about homosexuality in the Arab world for his class at the Sorbonne. (Term papers, it seems, are a thing of the past.)
He tries to track down some gay Muslim men to interview, first by hanging around in front of a gay tea shop, then by placing an advertisement in a newspaper. All of Karim's respondents make advances toward him, provoked by his willowy frame and large, expressive eyes, which Sihem likens to the great, yearning orbs of Vermeer's ''Girl With a Pearl Earring.''

Karim is disturbed at first, but before long he begins to feel flattered by all the attention. He strikes up a friendship with Farid (Riyad Echahi), a serious young flight attendant who puts him in touch with gay Muslims in Paris and elsewhere, all the while incubating his own crush on Karim. As Karim spends more and more time with Farid, Sihem starts getting anxious, as well she might.
It's clear where ''The Road to Love'' is headed after its first few minutes, and the feature, crudely shot with what seems to be an amateur video camera, has few stylistic compensations. But some interesting reporting enters on the edges of the familiar story line, as Karim uncovers the complicated and often contradictory attitudes toward homosexuality in Islam.

Homosexual relationships, he finds, are tolerated in many Muslim cultures as an outlet for pent-up desires that must otherwise wait until marriage. There was even one relatively modern culture, centered in the Siwa oasis in Egypt, where marriage ceremonies between men were performed, though those marriages dissolved when the time for grown-up, reproductive coupling arrived. Only passive homosexuality, Farid explains to Karim, is considered truly shameful. Sex, in other words, is power, in which a sense of domination counts for everything -- not, alas, a notion exclusive to the Arab world.
But as much as you would like to linger beneath the shady palms of Siwa, the film eventually returns to its well-worn dramatics. ''Maybe,'' Karim says of his documentary project, ''I chose it unconsciously to reveal my preference for men.''
Under the circumstances, -- Karim is flying off to Marrakesh with Farid for a romantic weekend -- that does look like a distinct possibility.

Shiner (2004)

Shiner (2004)

Takvi parovi u suštini imaju i najstabilnije veze.
Kada dolazi do kraha?

Sado-mazohizam nije nikakva nova pojava, a nije ni bolest kako mnogi tumače.

I can’t remember the last time a direct-to DVD film had as much impact on me as “Shiner.” This is one film about which you can assuredly use the overused adjective “controversial.” Either a Godard-like meditation on the inherent violence of late-capitalist America or beat-off material for “Fight Club” buffs, “Shiner” pulls no punches — or, rather, does nothing but pull punches — in its depiction of a claustrophobic group of Angelenos.

Most people will probably be put off by the relentless violence. But if you can stick it out, you will find yourself asking some Big Picture questions: Why did Bush invade Iraq? Why did al Quaida destroy the World Trade Center? Why do Palestinian teenagers blow themselves up? Why did the Hutus randomly slaughter Tutsis in Rwanda?

Maybe it’s simply because they can. Maybe we’re just hard-wired to do violence upon each other — and ourselves.

Such, anyway, is the worldview presented by director Christian Calson. The two ne’er-do-wells at the center of the action (in every sense) are lovers in everything but fact. They beat each other, force each other into “homo” situations and, in their spare time, gay bash pick-ups. Talk about your anti-heroes!

We also meet a punk boxer, his gay stalker and a straight couple that give new meaning to the song “Love Is a Battlefield.” It helps considerably that the cast is uniformly attractive, in refreshingly ordinary-looking ways. The use of video makes the film look like porn — all the more disconcerting, considering the incessant bloodletting.

Don’t be surprised if Calson joins Gus Van Sant, Ang Lee, Todd Haynes and Todd Solendz in going on to the Hollywood big-time, based on this profoundly disturbing exploration of the darkest side of human nature.

In recent years, gay anthologies have become a subcategory of their own. The latest entry, “Men’s Mix,” lives up to its name.

The seven shorts range from a silent meditation on the life of an Argentinean 10-peso note to a traditional short-form documentary about an old-time barber shop in San Francisco to an all-too ironic look at 1950s sexual repression.

“Gaydar” has a great premise — that a device can detect who’s gay or not. But it devolves into low-brow sitcom situations, too broadly played. “Burl’s” and “Safe Journey” are sensitive explorations into sexuality in hostile cultures.

By far the most successful short is “Touched.” A 53-year-old man leaves his female dinner companion and heads to a gay bar. There he meets a stunning young man who expresses interest. The two go home with some very unexpected consequences.

In the space of only a few minutes, this two-hander manages to explore the issues of aging, urban anomie and existential dread in a way that many more pretentious full-length films never achieve. Philadelphia first-timer Mike Lemon turns in a stunning debut

Two feature films — both reviewed favorably by myself in these pages — also make their debuts. Both are must-sees if you missed them the first time around.

“Latter Days” contains some clichéd moments and too-pat coincidences. But if you can watch the ending without a tear welling up, you’re stronger than I am. A passionate performance by Steve Sandvoss, who plays a conflicted Mormon, anchors the film, as does a compassionate cameo by screen legend Jacqueline Bisset. For those who can’t get enough, Centaur has released the soundtrack on CD (www.centaurmusic.com; 888-9-CENTAUR).

“Bulgarian Lovers” is another little gem from Spain, which has assumed pride of place as the current center of gay cinema. (Who’da thunk it?) Veteran gay director Ely de la Iglesia uses the one-sided relationship between a straight Bulgarian hustler and his mark, an average-Joe Spaniard, as a metaphor for the post-Communist integration of Eastern European countries into the European Union.

This film entertains on so many levels — the personal, political, sexual and dramatic — that you need to see it at least twice to absorb its many meanings. Superior performances all around and a gimlet eye aimed with laser-beam intensity on this crazy thing we call love keeps the mind engaged even as your heart is breaking.

L.I.E. - Long Island Expressway (2001)

L.I.E. - Long Island Expressway

Wikipedia:

L.I.E. is an independent film, released in 2001, about a relationship between Howie, a 15-year-old boy, and a pederast known as 'Big John'. The title is an acronym for the Long Island Expressway. The film was directed by Michael Cuesta who has said that the film is about exploring sexuality.[1]. It stars Paul Dano as Howie and Brian Cox as Big John. Sexual contact between the two is merely suggested, not shown, and there is only one sex scene between an adult couple. The controversial portrayal of Big John as a sympathetic sexual predator earned the film an NC-17 rating.
Howie Blitzer is deeply affected by the death of his mother in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway and finds solace in the company of his best friend Gary (Billy Kay), a juvenile delinquent and hustler. Gary is attracted to Howie, but Howie is unsure of his sexuality. They have two other 15-year-old friends, one of whom, Kevin, has an incestuous relationship with his sister. The four boys regularly break into neighborhood houses.

One night, they break into the house of 'Big John' Harrigan during his birthday party. Gary knows his way around the house and it transpires later that he used to have a sexual relationship with Big John. They make a noise and Big John confronts them, ripping a pocket off Howie’s pants. They manage to get away with a pair of valuable World War II pistols.

John confronts Gary over the burglary and Gary names Howie as his accomplice. John is manipulative in his pursuit and grooming of Howie. He does research on Howie then approaches him at a diner, speaking French because he knows the boy speaks French and he pretends that he knew his mother. He offers the boy a lift home and Howie is impressed that Big John happens to drive Howie's dream car. Once he has gained Howie’s confidence he pulls out the torn pocket and demands that Howie returns the guns. Howie manages to get one gun back from Gary’s room, and returns it. When he arrives at the house, John has a photograph of a shirtless pre-pubescent boy upon his laptop. John wants $1000 for the other gun and Howie offers to work for him to pay off the debt.

John then puts his plan for seducing Howie into action. He puts on a pornographic video showing heterosexual oral sex then sits down beside Howie. He starts to stroke the boy’s thigh and says, “What have you got that’s worth a thousand dollars?” He also asks Howie if his penis is more than five inches and claims “I’m the best cocksucker in the whole Western Hemisphere.” Howie does not respond to his advances.

John has a 19-year-old live-in lover called Scott who says to John as Howie leaves, “You should be ashamed of yourself.” John responds, “I am. I always am.”

When he returns home, Howie masturbates to a fantasy involving both John and the girl in the video. Gary then steals money from Howie’s distant father (Bruce Altman) and disappears to Los Angeles. This affects Howie and his confusion over his sexual identity increases. Michael Cuesta has said that this sexual ambiguity is at the heart of the film. Howie doesn’t know if he is gay or straight

John and Howie begin a tenuous friendship in which John becomes a kind of father figure to the boy. There is no sexual activity, but there is talk of sex. When John lets Howie drive his car and John implies he was some kind of James Bond figure, Howie says, “James Bond doesn’t go around blowing boys.” Howie realises that he wields sexual power over John and John realises this too. This is possibly a new experience for John and Brian Cox has said, “Big John realises that Howie is much more than a little boy, a young boy he can hit on”. Michael Cuesta has said that John was confused. John didn’t know if he wanted “to be with him, sexually, or just father him.” [4]. John realises that Howie is special.

Howie stays over at John’s house and John asks Scott to go and stay in a motel for a few nights. Howie wanders round the house and, while picking up a toy drum on a mantelpiece discovers a stash of pictures of semi-naked boys. Some are pictures of a younger (and naked) Gary and others are of a shirtless blond 11-year-old boy, confirming, as with the image on the laptop, that John is sexually attracted to pre-pubescent boys as well as adolescents and older teenagers. Scott comes into the room and warns Howie off taking what is his, i.e. John.

Howie is particularly vulnerable because he believes his father has abandoned him, and later that evening comes into John’s bedroom wearing just his underpants, expecting John to sleep with him. But when John tells Howie his father didn't abandon him, but is in jail, Howie breaks down and cries. In his compassion for Howie, John pulls back from molesting the boy and leaves him to sleep by himself. The next morning, John is all charm, fixing Howie a huge breakfast and he then takes Howie to see his father in jail.

In the way he treats Howie, John demonstrates behavior that is like his public persona, rather than the dark sexual predator that he also is, but after dropping Howie off, he still returns to the place where boys wait for chickenhawks. As he sits in his car, Scott, who is devastated by the attention John is giving to Howie, drives by and shoots him dead.

At the end, everyone Howie has ever loved has left him: his mother and John are dead; Gary has run away, and his father is in prison and in the final scene he is contemplating the expressway, vowing he won't let it get him too.

Skin and Bone (1996)

Skin and Bone (1996)

IMDB
Very much enjoyed this nasty, little portrait of the L.A. hustling scene where aspiring actors find themselves at the bottom of the barrel while they wait, usually in vain, for their big break. The acting was surprisingly good for this low budget production. Clearly, the director didn't worry about shying away or sanitizing his subject matter. Sure, there's not much here we haven't already seen, but never this graphic. Which makes it all the more honest. And the avalanche of male nudity gave this an edgy sexiness that's missing from other similar pictures like My Own Private Idaho or Johns. How can you have a movie about male exploitation and prostitution and not show nudity as they did in those two films? In this culture, I still find naked men on film to be novel and highly erotic. Alan Boyce as the hapless and sexy hustler Dean is particularly appealing, and he handles his descent into sex object status with disarming charm and innocence. Hope to see more of him soon.

Wikipedia:

Skin and Bone is a 1996 drama film. It played the film festival circuit in 1996 and 1997 before its limited American theatrical release in 1998. The film features a number of songs by the queercore band Pansy Division and includes a cameo by David Arquette playing a client (Arquette would the same year play a hustler in the film johns).

Plot summary

Skin and Bone follows the stories of three Los Angeles-area hustlers, Harry, Dean and Billy, and Ghislaine, their pimp. Harry (B. Wyatt) is the most experienced of the three. Despite his experience he's managed to delude himself into believing that he's not a prostitute but an "actor" providing "fantasies." He is in fact trying to pursue an acting career but has been unsuccessful. Ghislaine (Dillenberg) relies on him to help her train new recruits, including Dean (Boyce) and Billy (Scullin). Harry services male and female clients and always acts as a "top;" many of his male clients hire him to beat them.

Billy is somewhat goofy and absent-minded and repeatedly finds himself mistaking the wrong man for his client. In one such instance he ends up falling in love with the guy and they plan for Billy to get out of the business and start a life together. Tragically, Billy mistakes another man for a client in a public restroom and that man stabs him to death.

Harry goes on a casting call for a cop movie. The casting director asks him if he will do nudity, clearly implying a casting couch scenario. Harry says he's an artist and loses the role.

Dean is performing as a "nude cleaner" for a client. Dean learns that the client was paralyzed in combat and is still longing for the boy he fell in love with in the Marines, who was killed. The client can still achieve an erection and Dean has sex with him.

Harry is at an appointment with one of his regulars, a uniform fetishist who's called "The General." Usually he has Harry beat him but for this session, unknown to Harry, he's arranged something different with Ghislaine. After showing Harry a picture of himself in which he closely resembles Harry, the General orders Harry to strip. When Harry hesitates, the General attacks him from behind, binds his hands with tape and rapes him.

Harry has his acting agent set up an "interview" with a casting director. He lets the casting director fuck him. Following the interview, Harry goes over to Dean's and finds him sitting alone burning himself with a cigarette. He tells Harry that he ran away from home after his father, to teach him a lesson, had him arrested at age 14 for shoplifting a candy bar. Dean was put in a cell with a number of men who took turns raping him.

Harry gets cast in a small role as a cop and on the set so impresses the producers that they offer him a part in a series.

Ghislaine calls Harry and sends him to the local morgue with $2,500 to bribe an attendant. At the morgue Harry sees Billy's body and figures out that the money is so Ghislaine can acquire it for a client. He confronts Ghislaine and accuses her of setting up Billy's murder. Harry tells Ghislaine he wants out and he wants to take Dean with him. Ghislaine agrees, as long as Harry and Dean perform one final scene.

The scene is a cop/prisoner scenario which starts out with the cop beating the prisoner then the prisoner overpowering the cop, binding and beating and finally shooting him. Harry plays the cop and Dean the prisoner. Harry, bound and gagged, spots Ghislaine switching his gun (loaded with blanks) for another gun but can't get Dean to understand the danger. As Ghislaine and the client watch and the client tapes the scene, Dean pulls the trigger and kills Harry.

Six months later, Dean is living on the streets. Ghislaine finds him and convinces him to return to work.

The film is broken up into color and black and white sequences, with black and white usually denoting that the scene involves one or more of the hustlers engaged with a client. The black and white scenes always indicate that one or more of the characters on-screen is fantasizing, and it's not always the client having the fantasy. Interestingly, when Dean has sex with the paralyzed client the scene is in color. There are some inconsistencies on the color/black and white scheme. For instance, Harry has an S/M scene that's all in color. Harry has a number of fantasies about a woman he formerly knew (and who apparently is dead) and those are occasionally in color. In the final scene, Harry and Dean are in black and white but when the client and Ghislaine are shown watching they're in color, raising the question of exactly who is having the fantasy.

Masahista (2005) - The Masseur

U Blogu sam već postavio Dva Filipinska filma, Bathhouse (2005) i The Man in the Lighthouse (Lalake sa Parola, Ang (2007)

Dok masira klijente Iliac sluša njihove životne priče , tješi ih kad zatreba i ukoliko plate sve to začini seksom.

English:

Following the death of his father and a chance meeting with an abusive romance novelist, a masseur working in a gay massage parlor struggles to make sense of his unfulfilling relationships while simultaneously assisting his mother in preparing his father for burial. Twenty-year-old Iliac (Coco Martin) may not be the best masseur in the parlor, but when he catches the eye of a cold and calculated romance novelist looking for a cheap thrill, the icy indifference displayed by his paying lover does little more to warm the spirits than his sexually charged but emotionally distant girlfriend. Despite the resentment Iliac feels towards his late father for abandoning the family and embarking on a suicidal alcohol binge, the lovelorn youth nevertheless makes the journey home to be there for his grieving mother in her time of need. As he prepares his father for burial and his mind wanders back to the previous night's encounter at the massage parlor, Iliac's increasingly complex love life disturbingly begins to mirror his troubled family life. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Bulgarian Lovers - (Los Novios Bulgaros ) (2003)

Postavio sam i trailer.

Synopsis:

Daniel (Fernando Guillén Cuervo) is a middle-aged, gay man who comes from an established family and lives a charmed, middle-class existence. He is a "regular" of Madrid's gay bar scene sometimes hunting for good-looking, young foreigners. At one of these bars, he meets Kyril (Dritan Beba), a hunky 23-year-old Bulgarian. After a night of animalistic passion, Daniel is under his Eastern European spell. Wild, reckless and slightly dangerous, Kyril seems to turn Daniel's conservative and rather predictable life upside down. With each sexual encounter with his Bulgarian lover, Daniel is pulled deeper into Kyril's web of nefarious activities. Can Daniel meet the challenges of his brand new lover or has he bitten off more than he can chew?
