Seashore (2015)

Seashore (2015)
"Beira-Mar" (original title)

Directors: Filipe Matzembacher, Marcio Reolon
Writers: Filipe Matzembacher, Marcio Reolon
Genre: Drama
Country: Brazil
Language: Portuguese
Duration: 83 min

Stars: Mateus Almada, Ariel Artur, Maurício Barcellos

Review by Michael Lyons
Think about a movie that is non-stop action: explosions, guns blazing, with a trademark wisecracking, beefcake, invariably white hetero leading man—I guess what I’m saying is, think of Age of Ultron. Then think of a film that is the exact opposite of that, one that is so subtle, where so little happens it’s difficult to say what you just saw. In the best way possible, Seashore is this film.

I should preface this review by saying that I love a good boring movie, by which I mean my choice of film sits at the latter end of the spectrum mentioned above, a film that can make a lot happen with very little action. Life, after all, is just a lot of staring blankly and feeling shitty about stuff.
Seashore is a Brazilian film about Martin and Tomaz, two young men nearing adulthood. They return to the hometown of Martin’s estranged grandfather and then, for the first three-quarters of the movie, very little happens. There’s a tension between the two as they undertake this journey, and it’s unclear why they are on it. Martin (the brooding Mateus Almada) must confront his relationship with his family’s past. Tomaz (played by the frighteningly pretty Maurício Barcellos) admits he shouldn’t even be there with his friend, but as the pieces slowly and quietly fall into place, all becomes clear.

Seashore02To say Seashore is a slow burn of a film is an understatement. The feature hands out little tidbits, glimpses of the character’s lives and motivations, jealously. Between these few moments, the characters muddle through friendships, they drink, they wander around town. Life is presented as a wasteland of mundane, melancholy nothingness with the rare moment of warmth and connection. The tension in the audience was palpable as the film continued, and at the climatic moment it felt like a tightly wound spring had uncoiled. This wasn’t to the taste of all, as we had a few walkouts—hilariously, about 90 percent in, just before the film took a gay turn. The main criticism I heard as the audience filtered out, and indeed from my film companion, was that the film was too slow.

To me, however, this is Seashore’s ultimate success; aside from exquisite cinematography, the film’s dynamics build so slowly, almost tortuously, that there’s a real sense of accomplishment in the end. It’s like watching a tide come in inch by inch. Even though it’s agonizingly slow, there’s something raw and powerful about it, and it feels wonderful to let it simply wash over you.

"Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho" (original title)

Director: Daniel Ribeiro
Writer: Daniel Ribeiro (script)
Genre: Drama
Country: Brazil
Language: Portuguese
Year: 2014
Duration: 95 min

Stars: Ghilherme Lobo, Fabio Audi, Tess Amorim, Selma Egrei, Eucir de Souza

Jay Weissberg on Variety.Com

The-Way-He-Looks-2Everyone will root for the two teen protags in Daniel Ribeiro’s sweet gay coming-of-age debut, “The Way He Looks,” since the boys are so likable and their route to first love has an undeniably touching quality. Centered on a blind high schooler chomping at the bit for independence while discovering his sexuality, the pic has genuine appeal, though in truth the script and direction are little more than average. However, its affirmative stance could be vitally formative for gay teens, and Berlin’s Teddy Award, plus Fipresci’s Panorama nod, should open doors to niche release worldwide.

The-Way-He-Looks-5Ribeiro first floated the story in his short “I Don’t Want to Go Back Alone,” made expressly to raise funding for the feature. Leonardo (Ghilherme Lobo), blind from birth, is largely well integrated into his school in Sao Paulo, though a few bullying kids occasionally make life unpleasant. His wisecracking best friend, Giovana (Tess Amorim), vigilantly looks out for him even though he’s blithely unaware of the torch she carries. Then new kid Gabriel (Fabio Audi) arrives in class, a sudden object of interest for all the girls. Leonardo is intrigued, Gabriel solicitous. Soon they’re hanging out together, much to Giovana’s fury, since she feels shut out, no longer the sole caretaker to her BFF.

The-Way-He-Looks-7Concurrent with the boys’ deepening friendship is Leonardo’s increasing frustration with his overprotective parents; in this, Ribeiro errs by making them behave as if their son’s been blind for just a few years rather than his entire life. Mom (Lucia Romano) in particular is reluctant to let Leonardo remain alone in the house even for an afternoon; Dad (Eucir de Souza), in a nice speech, is more supportive of his son’s interest in study-abroad programs, wanting to be sure his yearning for independence stems from the right reasons.

Most of the dialogue feels recycled from countless teen pics, and were this a film about a blind boy falling in love with a girl, there’d be nothing to make it stand out. The-Way-He-Looks-99But this is a gay story, done with tenderness and capturing the hesitancy of expressing affection when rejection can have ugly consequences. Had “The Way He Looks” been made 20 years ago, it would be hard to overestimate the impact it could have had on gay teens desperate for this sort of positive representation; although the field has expanded somewhat recently, this could still be a meaningful catalyst in boosting confidence and self-worth for those struggling to come out.

Ribeiro, who won the Crystal Bear in 2008 with “You, Me and Him,” includes a few visually pleasing setpieces, such as a scene of Gabriel teaching Leonardo to dance. Otherwise, lensing is professional in a standard way, carefully ensuring that the filtered lighting sympathetically bathes everyone in a cool attractive glow. Unexpected musical choices feel just right.

Floating Skyscrapers (2013)

Writer: Tomasz WasilewskiGenre: DramaCountry: Poland
Language: PolishDuration: 93 min
Year: 2013

Stars: Mateusz Banasiuk, Marta Nieradkiewicz, Bartosz Gelner, Katarzyna Herman, Mariusz Drezek

1Tomasz Wasilewski nam kroz ovu filmsku priču otkriva i drugu stranu konzervativne katoličke Poljske.

Alissa Simon on VARYETY.COM

In today’s conservative, predominantly Catholic Poland, an open homosexual relationship is more likely to trigger gay bashing than gay pride; so it is in Tomasz Wasilewski’s sophomore feature, the feel-bad coming-out drama “Floating Skyscrapers.” Although the lead character is something of a lout as well as an emotional and intellectual cipher, this artfully shot, sexually provocative feature nabbed the Karlovy Vary fest’s East of the West competish kudo and is making the festival rounds.
11Buff, macho, bantam-sized, twentysomething Kuba (Mateusz Banasiuk) has been training as an elite swimmer for the past 15 years. He spends most of his time working out and having hot sex with his pretty blonde girlfriend, Sylwia (standout Marta Nieradkiewicz), who lives with him and his attractive, controlling mother, Ewa (Katarzyna Herman, star of Wasilewski’s first film, “In a Bedroom”). The relationship between the two women is tense, exacerbated by Sylwia’s inconsiderate behavior and Ewa’s calls for her son to rub her back while she’s in the bathtub.
7Otherwise, Kuba seems to have few responsibilities or interests, apart from being a dab hand in the kitchen and indulging in wordless sexual encounters with men in bathroom stalls at the gym. When Sylwia drags Kuba to an art opening, he ungraciously decamps to a balcony, where he shares a joint and a long conversation with effeminate-looking college student Michal (Bartosz Gelner). Glimpsing the two men from across the room, Sylwia glowers at the way they seem to be really into each other. She soon has a lot more to scowl about, as Kuba abandons her and their plans every time Michal calls.

m

A subplot addresses Michal’s relationship with his parents. His mother (Iza Kuna) sympathizes with his sexual preference, yet still encourages him to date girls. His father (Miroslaw Zbrojewicz), however, plays deaf when Michal tries to come out publicly during a family dinner.
78One of the weaknesses of the film is that while Kuba convincingly comes across as a closeted, self-loathing gay man, his sudden declaration of love for Michal at the one-hour mark seems out of character. Indeed, their relationship is shown to revolve around physical desire; we never get to hear their conversations or find out what makes the not particularly likable Kuba tick.
As evidenced by his debut feature, Wasilewski is interested in provocative sexual behavior and has no problem getting his thesps to play intimate, graphic scenes. However, he’s less successful when it comes to creating appealing characters in which the audience can take a rooting interest. Nevertheless, “Skyscrapers” marks a big step up from the low-budget “Bedroom” and showcases the helmer’s flair for composition and intelligent use of sound.
Thesping is strong, with the actresses managing to suggest more about their characters than their male counterparts do with theirs. Eye-catching widescreen production design makes interesting use of water motifs, while sophisticated soundscapes leave some sexual activity to the imagination.

Geography Club 007"GEOGRAPHY CLUB" is based on Brent Hartinger's best-selling critically acclaimed novel. "What am I looking for?" 16-year old Russell Middlebrook asks himself as he heads off on his newest adventure. Russell is still going on dates with girls. Kevin will do anything to prevent his football teammates from finding out what he is concealing. Min and Terese tell everyone they're really just good friends. And then there's Ike who can't figure out who he is or who he wants to be. But the truth is too hard to hide-at least from each other-so they form the Geography Club.

Geography Club 010

Nobody else will discover the truth about them as no other students in their right mind would ever want to join as geography sounds so boring. Their secrets will be safe from their classmates. But are they? "Geography Club" is a smart, fast, moving and funny account of contemporary teenagers as they discover their own sexual identities, dreams and values and not merely live out their parents' desires and ambitions.

Geography Club 005Russell, Kevin, Min, Terese and Ike may not learn about actual places in their undercover social club, but they daringly explore the danger-filled clique-mined landscape of Goodkind High School and courageously begin their journey in the exciting, still uncharted terrain of the human heart.
The film is produced by Huffington Pictures' Michael Huffington (ex-husband of Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington) and follows a group of high schoolers who are discovering their own sexual identities -- along with their dreams and ambitions in life.
“This universal story of each of us finding our true selves will resonate with anyone who attended high school for decades to come," says Huffington. "We are delighted that Breaking Glass Pictures is joining forces with our team to bring this entertaining and meaningful movie to the public.”

Sweet, romantic story ... but ENOUGH with the waves already!,
7 November 2007, Author: bigbearphx from United States (IMDB)
rh2The plot of "Rock Haven" (2007) is simple and realistic, though far from original: is being gay an impossibility if you consider yourself a Christian as well?
Brady is a shy, introspective 18 year old spending the summer before going away to college in a small coast town in Northern California. He is there with his widowed mother, who is a devout Christian in the process of establishing a religious school for the local pastor. Brady spends most of his time either reading the bible or staring off at the waves crashing on shore, until he meets a neighbor's free- spirited visiting son, 19 year old Clifford. While we later find out that Brady had some early inklings that he was somewhat attracted to other boys, he never before felt drawn to anyone as he feels to Clifford, and the other boy makes it clear that the feeling is mutual. Sensing his apprehensions and inexperience, Clifford lets their relationship develop slowly over the course of the summer, and, although he kids Brady about being a "nerd" in many of his interests, is careful not to express a conflict with his religious upbringing and convictions.

rock_haven_resize
In the film “Rock Haven,” religion, sexuality and romance collide as a deeply spiritual young man experiences his first love.

500fullA beautifully written story by director/writer David Lewis ("Under One Roof"), capably acted by a talented Bay Area cast. While the basic plot is not original, and the story development somewhat predictable, it is told in a well-paced, sweet and romantic manner that lets the viewer feel the emotions experienced by the characters. The one negative I must point out is Lewis' seeming obsession with numerous extended scenes of waves crashing on the beach (Waves wash out like past experiences, wash back to erase what was on the sand before, metaphor for life going on, new beginnings, yadda yadda yadda ... WE GET IT! The ocean should not have more screen time than the actors!) Other than that, I enjoyed the film and recommend it, especially for those who may be going through a similar dilemma.
DVD has deleted scenes, production stills and trailer. No director commentary, which would have been nice (I'd have loved to hear what he says about the ocean scenes.

Winner of “Best Short” at the 2004 Tampa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.  A young man struggles with his sexuality and learns a life lesson from his nine-year-old cousin.  The film grew out of a brief but transcending moment that Hull shared with his young cousin on the dock of a summer cottage.

l_1625150_444829faBavo Defurne’s debut feature is a beautifully measured coming-of-age drama based on André Sollie’s novel, This Is Everlasting. He built up an international reputation with his highly stylised shorts such as Campfire and Particularly Now, In Spring.
Pim lives in a small town on the Belgian coast, together with his single mother Yvette, a local accordion starlet. It’s an ordinary existence which Pim brightens up by dreaming of princesses, beauty queens and handsome Gino, the boy next door. But when hunky traveller Zoltan blows through town, Pim’s life takes an exciting and unexpected turn.
Influenced by filmmakers such as Carl Dreyer and Eisenstein as well as photographers such as Herbert List and Pierre et Gilles, North Sea Texas celebrates the heartache of first love.

Brzopleti, naivni, slušaju svoje srce pa srljaju u pustolovinu zvanu coming-out! Nema bezbolnog outovanja!

"Juste une question d'amour" (Just a Question of Love), directed and cowritten by Christian Fauré (Un amour ŕ taire) aired on French television in 2000. It is a coming-out (as gay) story that focuses as much on the parents as on the young men who are in love with each other.

000qbygyParents sometimes surprise their gay and lesbian offspring by accepting them. But sometimes the children are right to fear the reactions of their parents. Laurent (Cyrille Thouvenin, "La confusion des genres") loves his parents(Daničlle Denie) and Pierre (Idwig Stéphane), who run a mom-and-pop pharmacy in Paris and is very afraid that they will reject him if they find that he is gay. This is unlikely to happen while he is having sex with men, but not in love with anyone. Moreover, he has the cover (a "beard") of a female room-mate (it seems that rather a lot of young gay men in recent French movies are living with straight women, but I vaguely remember that so was I between my long-term lovers). Laurent's parents dote on Carole (Caroline Veyt). Visions of grandchildren dance in their heads, though Carole is growing weary of having the name (Laurent's partner) without having the game.

000q9dcrLaurent does not have to guess about what will happen, because it pretty much already has happened—to a cousin with whom he was very close. Marc's parents (Laurent's mother's sister and her husband) cut off all communication with Marc, when they learned he was gay. Laurent's parents refused to take Marc in, and when Marc's parents heard that Marc was dying, they proclaimed that AIDS was a just punishment for him (though Marc was dying of acute hepatitis picked up in Vietnam rather than AIDS).

The status quo of Laurent and Carole pretending to be a couple has been destabilized by Laurent's failures (in agricultural school) since Marc's terminal illness. Laurent is dispatched to a field station near Lille in which Cédric (Stéphan Guérin-Tillié) is experimenting on developing vegetables resistant to (((ever-increasing) pollution. Cédric is an intense, bearded hunk. He and Laurent quickly fall into each other's arms.

Just A Question Of Love[05]Cédric took over the family business (a nursery along with the field station) when his father died, which Laurent's father finds exemplary (he is displeased that Laurent has not studied to become a pharmacist) and Laurent's mother likes the Cédric lives with his mother (Emma, played by Eva Darla (Une histoire simple). Emma realized she could accept that Cédric was gay or lose him—immediately after having lost her husband.

Cédric does not want to live the lie of just being Laurent's boss and participate in the Laurent/Jeanne charade. He pushes Laurent, though Emma tells him he should not expect Laurent to move faster than Cédric himself had. She is very maternal to Laurent. Laurent wishes that his mother was like Emma,,, but knows she is not.

JusteuneQuestiondAmourThen the melodrama kicks in and most everyone is furious with everyone else (except Cédric and Carole, both of whom push Laurent to come out, and Marc's lover, who is sympathetic to everyone). I do not want to spoil what surprised me in detonating the explosions—which is to say that the trajectory is at least somewhat unpredictable even for someone who has heard and seen many coming-out stories. (I might note that neither Cédric nor Laurent has any connection to politicized gay identity: the message they articulate is "I love him and he loves me and we are going to be together.")

The cast is uniformly excellent, with Eva Darla particularly standing out. The cinematography, music, and editing are unobtrusively effective. Thouvenin and Guerin-Tillie have a palpable chemistry. They can be playful with each other, but both are passionate, not only in love, but in quarrels. (Both can also sulk, too.)

Unlike the other French coming-of-age movies I've seen in the last few years, there is no frontal male nudity (drat!), no bared female breasts, and no simulated coitus (there's kissing and post-coital bed scenes).

There are trailers for eight other French movies, but no bonus features about this one. The (widescreen) visual and audio transfers are excellent, the subtitles legible and devoid of peculiar grammmatical constructions.

Although not breaking new cinematic ground, I can't think of any way the story of these characters, none of whom is one-dimensional, could have been shown. What it is showing parents also seems very valuable, t, though those who most would most gain from watching it are the least likely to undertake a subtitled French tv movie with two young men in love with each other, neither of whom wants to lose his parents.
