Genre: Romance, Drama
Country: USA
Language: English
Duration:110 min

Stars: Mark Cirillo, Scott Sell, David Alanson Bradberry

The Last Straight Man 2“The Last Straight Man” spada u klasičnu gay-str8 romansu sa srećnim krajem.

The Last Straight Man 6Ovakvih filmova smo već gledali ranije, a najsličniji je filmu The One.

Sadness, heartbreak & regret permeates "The Last Straight Man"

IMDB

The Last Straight Man 99A very involving film from filmmaker Mark Bessenger, "The Last Man" standing is a therapeutic treat for anyone who's been involved in truncated relationships. From the outset, both leading men are aware of their feelings for one another. Lewis (Mark Cirillo) is a closeted man throwing a bachelor party for his straight best friend and secret crush, Cooper (Scott Sell). However, they also realize their relationship is doomed due to to the marital circumstance surrounding Cooper. Emotions run high as both men agree to schedule a yearly one night stand reprieve from the grind of life. During this interlude they are both allowed to ask three intimate questions to be answered as truthfully and as authentically as possible. That opportunity allows both lead characters tThe Last Straight Man 4o exchange confessions on their true feelings in addition to giving each other the needed updates they crave just to see where their relationship stands. You would think that Lewis is unilaterally suffering through the bulk of heartache this unrequited love situation is generating. However, much suffering is to be had by Cooper who is torn between his family and his real belated love found for Lewis. This is the type of love that has grown so out of bounds, Cooper does not know how to deal with his emotions.
The beauty of this film lies in what is not said. Both Lewis and Cooper are deeply in love and their non verbal exchange speaks volumes. Their jokes fall flat whenever they come close to addressing their real feelings forcing one or both to change the subject.

The Last Straight Man 88"May your hair never fall, your dick always rise and your kids never call your brother-in-law daddy" is only one of the many witty dialogue shared by both Cooper and Lewis in what may seem at times to be funny banter translate into the men trying their hardest to convey their deepest sentiments. Their language, muddled by the restrictive code of silence men as a species have been known to observe in order to preserved the stereotypical macho front, is made to cover any an all possible honest feelings that may withdraw true emotion leading to a defensiveness that would expose and possibly lead to the outpouring of one's authentic self.

In the form of a visual collage, the film skips to several progressive life events as both men evolve with the passage of time. As the men age w life experience, so does their love, affection and understanding of each other, which only seems to grow stronger with time, until Lewis realizes that at some point he has to be the better man and do the right thing for the benefit of Cooper's family. Such selflessness is what makes Lewis a likable character. He's always the reasonable one, where Cooper just wants to take their opportunity to let loose, and be who he really is. During their exchange of emotion in the bedroom, you can't help but to feel the plight and internal struggle they both face, but it is Lewis, who most of the times seems to be relegated to make the difficult choices.
The Last Straight Man 777Production values are satisfactory for this digital production. However, at times misplaced music becomes distracting in some very key moments that demand full attention for the words being exchanged between the two leads. Performances are courageous and engaging as both actors flawlessly perform with due diligence even during scenes of pervasive nudity and very explicit sexual situations. Kudos to Mark Cirillo & Scott Sell who create admirable performances, and also for their bravery in choosing to stay true to the story with some very demanding and at times difficult moments both leading men share as they emote during their intimacy.

The Last Straight Man 888
"The Last Straight Man" is a delight of a film, with an involved story that will leave you pondering on many underlying themes dealing with the way men express themselves and treat each other, and how not knowing to express true feelings can have long term and irreversible consequences on a life that should have been with the one.

Consul-of-Sodom-(18)The lechery, loves and literature of Spanish scribe Jaime Gil de Biedma receive pleasingly offbeat treatment in “The Consul of Sodom,” a biopic that depends on a compelling performance by Jordi Molla. Following its protag from the ’60s until his death from AIDS in 1990, the pic is an intriguing ride through the Barcelona arts scene of 30 years ago, but its bed-to-book-to-boardroom dynamic palls, leaving it short on dramatic clout. Still, this gorgeous-looking, sexually explicit and rarely dull “Consul” has a cultish appeal that could stimulate fest interest. Initial B.O. for the Jan. 8 release was solid but unspectacular.
Consul-of-Sodom-(5)Steamy early scenes take place in 1959 Manila, where the impeccable, white-jacketed Jaime (Molla), presented as an incorrigible seducer, takes full advantage of the local boys. Back in Barcelona, his father, Don Luis (Juli Mira), is concerned about the impact of Jaime’s lifestyle on the reputation of the family’s tobacco empire, particularly since Franco’s police are on the trail of commie sympathizers. Much is made of the conflict between family duties and fleshly urges, conformity and transgression.
Jaime’s literary cronies are publisher Carlos Barral (Josep Linuesa) and the refreshingly down-to earth Juan Marse (Alex Brendemuhl). Ironically, Jaime is refused membership in the Communist Party because he’s openly gay; he falls in with Bel (newcomer Bimba Bose, sometimes out of her depth), who becomes his muse and lover.
Consul-de-Sodoma-101The script does well to bring something unique to each of the multiple relationships it portrays. And the period is portrayed with loving attention to detail, if too often suffused with the warm nostalgia of melodrama. Though the decor is often sumptuous, the focus is always on character rather than setting.
Molla, who has a tendency to overact, plays to his strengths by showing Jaime as a man of devilish aspect who sees his life in theatrical terms. The result is his finest perf in years, growing stronger as the pic proceeds and his character ages. Though the poet is aloof, fastidious, sexually avaricious and often downright unpleasant, Molla never lets us lose sight of his insecurities.
Consul-of-Sodom-(10)Inevitably for an item about arty types, the dialogue is sometimes of the overwrought “you’re in love with pain” variety. Extracts from the poems are judiciously used to comment on the action, but more time is spent on Jaime’s sex life (with multiple full-frontals) than inside his head.
Pic’s approach has caused a stir in Spain, with the real-life Marse, now a revered novelist, expressing his strong indignation in the national press.

Gerontophilia - website - homepage VO SUB FR from Filmoption International on Vimeo.

Gospodin Peabody šarmira Lakea svojim romantičnim pričama o svojoj mladosti i priznaje mu svoj san – želi vidjeti okean po posljednji put.

18-year-old Lake has a sweet activist girlfriend, but one day discovers he has an unusual attraction for the elderly. Fate conspires to land him a summer job at a nursing home where he develops a tender relationship with Mr. Peabody. Discovering that the patients are being overmedicated to make them easier to manage, Lake decides to wean Mr. Peabody off this medication and help him escape, resulting in a humorous and heartfelt road trip that strengthens their bond. The always provocative Bruce LaBruce is back with a new romantic comedy (of sorts).

223

It’s extremely moving when a great director shifts gears, makes a U-turn and astonishes you, overturning all your expectations. Bruce LaBruce shocked the world with his tales of an outbreak of gay zombies, and now he is sure to take a poke at the hypocrisy of the moral majority with this hard-hitting yet sentimental, naughty yet poignant love story and (emotional and sexual) coming-of-age tale. The old geezer and the young lad, played by the charismatic Walter Borden and the very green yet sexy Pier-Gabriel Lajoie, are simply irresistible, and can’t resist each other, in fact, but this is no gay version of Harold and Maude. It’s the emotional, philosophical and aesthetic cross-section of those who love bodies that are different, elegant and decadent, and love them with the normal seductiveness of a teenager and not (just) the lyricism of a lovestruck rebel. One may be 82 and the other 18, but these are no tragic Romeos, just men, thirsting for love, hungry for life, and two sides of the same coin, naturally. Like their kisses in the car, which move you to the core.
Boris Sollazzo for Venice Days

Lake is an unusual boy: he is a young man with an old soul who discovers he has an odd fixation on the elderly. Realizing that some day, if fate allows, he will be one himself, he is particularly fascinated by old men. He imagines their age to be a beautiful thing and recognizes how these men were once young and vibrant and attractive, as he is now. Gerontophilia-1Although Lake has a girlfriend his own age, named Desiree, he wonders sometimes if his fixation on old men is unnatural and unhealthy - perhaps even sexual. When his mother, who is a nurse, takes on a management job at an old folks home, Lake jumps at her offer of a summer job as an orderly there. Gradually, Lake comes to discover that the old people in the institution are being given psychotropic drugs to keep them in a catatonic state. Lake befriends one old man in particular, Mr. Peabody, who still seems to have some fight left in him.
They begin to form a strong bond. Mr. Peabody charms Lake with romantic stories of his youth and confesses his dream of seeing the ocean one last time. Avoiding the vigilant eye of Nurse Stone, who administers shots and pills to the old folks, Lake starts to wean Mr. Peabody off his medication. Eventually, Lake springs Mr. Peabody from the institution. Together they embark on a road trip telling everyone they meet that the old man is his grandfather and that they're driving to the Pacific ocean. After numerous life-changing escapades, Lake is finally ready to accept his true feelings for Mr. Peabody, but everything changes when the trip takes a sudden turn.

Director: Miles Swain
Writer: Miles Swain
Genre: Drama, Comedy, Romance
Country: USA
Language: English
Duration: 95 min
Year: 2002

Stars: Larry Sullivan, Steve Braun, Ray Baker

By DAVE KEHR
Published: May 9, 2003 - The New York Times

''The Trip,'' a first feature written and directed by Miles Swain, is a gay melodrama with a historical dimension. The title, meant to be taken on a few metaphorical levels, refers first and foremost to the personal journey of Alan Oakley (Larry Sullivan), who begins the film in 1973 as a straight, uptight Young Republican working for an establishment newspaper and who eventually finds happiness as an openly gay man working for a radical homosexual-rights organization called Out Loud.

The agent of Alan's transformation is Tommy Ballenger (Steve Braun), a Texas teenager who has moved to Los Angeles to work for gay rights. When Alan first meets him -- at a louche party organized by Peter Baxter (Ray Baker), an older entertainment lawyer -- Alan sees Tommy as a potential interview subject for his book, a conservative attack on gay rights that he plans to call ''The Straight Truth.''
Before you can say ''closet case,'' Alan and Tommy are in bed together, an occasion marked by much forced hilarity when Alan's parents, a retired Army officer (Art Hindle) and a former Las Vegas showgirl (Jill St. John, in a remarkably poised appearance), show up for a visit the morning after.

Alan and Tommy soon make a gratingly perfect couple, which rouses the envy of scaly old Peter. His cunning plan, worthy of Alexis Carrington at her worst, consists of forcing a friend to publish Alan's long-abandoned, long-repudiated manuscript anonymously. When the book immediately becomes a best seller -- it is now 1977, at the height of Anita Bryant's ''Save Our Children'' campaign -- Alan continues to hide his authorship (though surely one talk show appearance denouncing his own former self would have gained his movement considerable publicity), allowing Peter to inform the media.

Imagine the look of surprise on Tommy's face when one of those annoying ''Live at Five'' reporters points a microphone at him and demands, ''Are you aware that the author of 'The Straight Truth' is your roommate of the last four years?''
But wait, as they say in infomercials, there's more: you also get a set of Ginsu steak knives, in the form of a third act, set in 1984, that finds Alan living in resigned misery with the predatory Peter. He receives a message from an old friend telling him that Tommy, now living in Mexico, is dying of AIDS and would like to see his former lover one more time.
So here begins the literal trip in ''The Trip,'' as the reunited companions try to cross rural Mexico in a beat-up convertible, hoping to take Tommy back to Texas for some treatment. The trip involves committing a couple of major felonies, considered here -- as in so many Hollywood films -- as essential steps on the way to self-actualization (viz. ''Thelma and Louise'').
With its implausible coincidences, inelegant plot twists and minimally characterized characters, ''The Trip,'' which opens today nationwide, doesn't have much going for it apart from its basic sincerity and decency, which are evident. Mr. Swain himself might benefit from some of the loosening up he has prescribed for Alan; his subject may be gay, but his film never departs from the straight-and-narrow technique of a television movie.
Daje mu odjeću, pruža smještaj i platu.

Hawaii is a film about a helpless man that is reunited with a childhood friend who helps him, thus creating a bond that goes beyond friendship.
hawaii_1_fullMartin seeks for an odd job at Eugenio's house. When Eugenio recognizes Martin as a childhood friend, and realizes his current situation, he decides to give him work for the summer. Unintentionally, a power & desire game is generated and a strange relationship starts to grow, but it cannot flourish mostly because of the social differences that grew between them since childhood. This kind of barrier typical in Jane Austen's novels is resignified in a contemporary story of social classes.
h7The film is about solidarity but also about the power game that is generated when one person is relying on another. The idea is to explore power, helplessness, social boundries, brotherhood, desire and love.
Similar to Plan B, Hawaii is a small & simple story, easy to shoot independently. All the film takes place in summer, in a countryside house, and only two characters carry the story forward.
Marco Berger was born in Buenos Aires in 1977. Studied at the University of cinema. His short film The Watch (2008) competed in Cannes and Sundance.
h2His first feature film Plan B (2009) premiered in the official competition of the Rome Film Festival and participated in many other prestigious festivals.
Absent (2011), his second feature film, premieres at the Berlinale where it won the prestigious Teddy Award (previously won by filmarkers such as Pedro Almodóvar, Francois Ozon, Derek Jarman, Todd Haynes, James Franco and John Cameron Mitchell). The film also recently won the Silver Condor (Cóndor de plata), the most prestigious award in Argentina for artistic inovation.
Both films are released commercially in France, Germany, England and America. Other highlights include: The short film A last will (2007), the short Platero, episode 2 of the film Five (2010) and the three short films Cousin, Broken arms and Training; Sexual Tension feature film, Volume 1: Volatile (2012). Hawaii is his first project as a producer.

Trevor is an escapist
Author: Dr Jacques COULARDEAU from Olliergues, France, IMDB
7 January 2013

ht2A small film about love but though it is interesting, there are many shortcomings.
The first one is that there are a great number of scenes in very dark atmosphere, I mean lacking lighting and that creates a sombre atmosphere that is not in touch with the subject.
The second is that Trevor's psychology is not very constructive. He seems to be going through a rejection phase. He has made a choice and that choice turns sour. So he rejects everything and everyone when he is most needed and as if he had no responsibility in what is happening around him. In other words he is an escapist.
Holding-Trevor-5One of his friend and, ex-boyfriend, is on drugs and Trevor is satisfied with knowing that he is on methadone and he does not want to have anything to do with him any more, and he is brutal about it. His brutality ruins the party of his female room mate and he does not seem to give a damn and he even insults this room mate when she protests.

Another shortcoming is the fact that the gay scene, and more widely the young people's sex scene is seen as being intertwined with binge drinking and drug addiction, with irresponsibility in such states that makes you take risks and play it bareback instead of safe. It is the female room mate who falls in that trap and she gets HIV positive of course. Slightly superficial and easy and hardly pedagogical about the problem.

3Trevor insists, even too much, on his father as a negative castrater and depriver and frustrater, etc, that forced him all the time to leave what he liked behind and yet this father is magically regenerated when it is needed with a sentence that is more than surprising: when you go away you don't have to leave things behind, or something like that. And he feels justified to go away from Los Angeles to New York with his lover who might be a life affair and leave behind without one thought about it all those who were his friends, shared his life and helped him in many ways to be what he is and even to meet his new and maybe lasting love of his, the doctor taking care of his drug addicted ex-boyfriend.

What a wonderful film!

8I saw this film for the first time at MQFF (Melbourne Queer Film Festival) and it blew me away with it's sensitive characterizations, elegant cinematography and beautiful use of music. This film was made on a micro budget and should be used as a yard stick for other indie film makers to live up to. This movie shows what can be accomplished with determination, drive and vision.
The plot is a straight forward coming of age story and whilst we have seen this type of thing before, we've never seen it told in quiet the same way with sparse beauty and compassion. The two main leads are destined for future success if this is any indication of what they are capable of. They are both charismatic and charming. They anchor the film and give it a gravity, sense of humor and emotional core. All the support actors are outstanding as well - they range from heavy and down right nasty to quirky, off beat and genuinely funny.
99The location filming in Melbourne's western suburbs gives the film a real slice of life feel that every Australian growing up in the burbs will relate to. The local area portrayed in the film becomes almost a character unto itself.
Both the score and songs are well used and add huge production value to this little film. The editing is slightly rough around the edges but it actually adds to the character of the film. I found it worked even better on a repeated viewing. We do tend to be so used to seeing bigger budget films that are slickly cut together whereas Monster Pies is a personal vision and works on a purely personal, one on one level. That is all part of the films magic.
4The direction and writing from Lee Galea show a maturity and depth of understanding of both film and the subject matter. For a second feature with a tiny budget this film rocks. Lee is obviously a child of the 90's and pays loving homage to them with great attention to detail. From local video libraries to phones with cords. I for one cannot wait to see what he makes next!
Try watching this film with an open mind and heart and I think you'll walk away from it slightly changed forever. I know I have.
