Redwoods (2009)

Redwoods (2009)

Director: David Lewis
Writers:David Lewis
Genres:Drama, Romance
Country:USA
Language: English
Duration:82 minutes
Year: 2009

Stars:Matthew Montgomery, Tad Coughenour, Caleb Dorfman

Two people weary from life meet unexpectedly and, even though they only know each other for a couple of days, discover a mind-blowing love that Changes Everything. But one of them has unbreakable commitments elsewhere — forcing him to ask, "Do I dare pursue this mind-blowing love, even if it means hurting other people?"
Everett feels stifled with Miles, the man with whom he is raising an autistic son. But then Miles and their son go away for a week, and Everett meets Chase, a traveling novelist in town to research a book.
And so begins a brief, bittersweet love affair that will echo throughout the ages.

Look, if you simply can’t buy this premise of "soul-mates," of love-at-first-sight, you won’t like this movie. And truthfully? I don’t buy this premise either, not in real life, where I think "infatuation" is completely different from "true love," which is something that grows slowly over time.
But for some reason, I can suspend my disbelief long enough to buy it on movie screens — or at least I bought it here — even despite a wildly over-the-top ending. This is a fantasy, pure and simple, and it is exactly as ridiculous as the two movies I mentioned above.
It helps that the two leads, Matthew Montgomery (Chase) and Brendan Bradley (Everett), do a wonderful job of selling all this. Bradley, who is reportedly straight in real life, has an appealingly vulnerable quality to him — exactly what the role requires. And Montgomery, who is openly gay and well-known in indie gay film, is certainly my idea of a handsome stranger who would force me to Question Everything.

Keep in mind that Redwoods is a micro-budget indie gay movie, surely made on a shoestring. As such, the synth-heavy music is occasionally distracting, the story flags for a bit, and the dialogue is sometimes a little clunky (especially toward the end when they discuss Chase’s novel their relationship).

That said, this is night-and-day better than most similarly-budgeted projects: the script is solid, the acting is remarkably good (and consistent; unlike a lot of these micro-budget movies, there are no painfully wooden supporting players). And — I know this sounds like a small thing, but it’s not — the lighting, which is so often "off" in these indie gay movies, looks professionally done.
Better still, the movie takes great advantage of the redwood forests where it is set. Too many low-budget movies are set in the front room of the director’s house, and they feel weirdly claustrophobic. This movie took the exact opposite approach — small budget, but big scope — and it absolutely paid off.
Mostly, I appreciate that, more and more, we live in an age where gay movies don’t have to always be angsty and depressing, or preachy and pointed. There are no closeted boyfriends in Redwoods, no disapproving parents to come out to.
This a pure cheese, a frothy romance — a gay guilty pleasure! And in my book, that makes this the most revolutionary gay film I’ve seen in quite some time.

Consul-of-Sodom-(18)The lechery, loves and literature of Spanish scribe Jaime Gil de Biedma receive pleasingly offbeat treatment in “The Consul of Sodom,” a biopic that depends on a compelling performance by Jordi Molla. Following its protag from the ’60s until his death from AIDS in 1990, the pic is an intriguing ride through the Barcelona arts scene of 30 years ago, but its bed-to-book-to-boardroom dynamic palls, leaving it short on dramatic clout. Still, this gorgeous-looking, sexually explicit and rarely dull “Consul” has a cultish appeal that could stimulate fest interest. Initial B.O. for the Jan. 8 release was solid but unspectacular.
Consul-of-Sodom-(5)Steamy early scenes take place in 1959 Manila, where the impeccable, white-jacketed Jaime (Molla), presented as an incorrigible seducer, takes full advantage of the local boys. Back in Barcelona, his father, Don Luis (Juli Mira), is concerned about the impact of Jaime’s lifestyle on the reputation of the family’s tobacco empire, particularly since Franco’s police are on the trail of commie sympathizers. Much is made of the conflict between family duties and fleshly urges, conformity and transgression.
Jaime’s literary cronies are publisher Carlos Barral (Josep Linuesa) and the refreshingly down-to earth Juan Marse (Alex Brendemuhl). Ironically, Jaime is refused membership in the Communist Party because he’s openly gay; he falls in with Bel (newcomer Bimba Bose, sometimes out of her depth), who becomes his muse and lover.
Consul-de-Sodoma-101The script does well to bring something unique to each of the multiple relationships it portrays. And the period is portrayed with loving attention to detail, if too often suffused with the warm nostalgia of melodrama. Though the decor is often sumptuous, the focus is always on character rather than setting.
Molla, who has a tendency to overact, plays to his strengths by showing Jaime as a man of devilish aspect who sees his life in theatrical terms. The result is his finest perf in years, growing stronger as the pic proceeds and his character ages. Though the poet is aloof, fastidious, sexually avaricious and often downright unpleasant, Molla never lets us lose sight of his insecurities.
Consul-of-Sodom-(10)Inevitably for an item about arty types, the dialogue is sometimes of the overwrought “you’re in love with pain” variety. Extracts from the poems are judiciously used to comment on the action, but more time is spent on Jaime’s sex life (with multiple full-frontals) than inside his head.
Pic’s approach has caused a stir in Spain, with the real-life Marse, now a revered novelist, expressing his strong indignation in the national press.

The best of the bunch is writer-director Brian Harris Krinsky’s Dish. The premise is deceptively simple: two gay teenagers spend their time texting each other about the usual teen pre-occupations: their classmates, self-image concerns, and sex. One of them, Louie (Jeff Martin), is older and sexually experienced while the other, 15-year old Israel (the refreshingly real Matthew Monge), is still a virgin.

Out in the Silence is a 2009 documentary film by Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer. It chronicles the chain of events that occur when the severe bullying of a gay teen draws Wilson and his partner back to the conservative rural community of Oil City, Pennsylvania where their own same-sex wedding announcement had previously ignited a controversy. The film focuses on the widely varying, emotional reactions of the town's residents including the teen and his mother, the head of the local chapter of the American Family Association, and an evangelical pastor and his wife.
cjbillsThe Out in the Silence Campaign for Fairness and Equality in Rural and Small Town America uses the film as a tool to raise the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and promote dialogue and bridge building[14]. The campaign has held over 500 grassroots screenings in town halls, schools, churches, and community centers, many in isolated areas that had not previously experienced any openly LGBT events. The Center for Social Media and the BRITDOC Foundation have highlighted the campaign as an example of using film for social change.
In 2011, the Campaign initiated the Out in the Silence Youth Activism Award to highlight the work of young people on LGBT inclusion and equality.

Heavenly Touch (2009)

Director: Joel Lamangan
Writers: Manny Valera (story), Joel Lamangan,
Genre: Drama
Country: Philippines
Language: Filipino, Tagalog
Year: 2009
Duration: 90 min

Stars: Paolo Serrano, Joash Balejado, Marco Morales, Gwen Garci, Paolo Rivero, Jeffrey Santos

Medical student Rodel supports his schooling by working nights at the Heavenly Touch Spa; a gay massage parlour. He likes working with his hands and his knowledge of anatomy makes him one of the most desired masseurs. When he discovers that his high school crush, Jonard, is unemployed, Rodel decides to teach him both the ropes and the rubs that will secure him a job at the spa.

Sexy, homoerotic and gay to the core, goes without saying. Yet this is equally a film that alternates its "when you've found the right person, you don't want to let go" theme with a telling depiction of the violent underbelly of massage parlour life, courtesy of gun-trotting heavy Tong. That it comes complete with a happy ending, is a spoiler, but given the plethora of bleak gay films of late, frankly that's something of a welcome relief. And boy, how these boys do kiss.

Genre: Short movie
Country: Australia

Stars: Luke Mullins, Martin Sharpe

Dva momka, jedan vidi, drugi je slijep, vide svijet i svoja tjela na drugačiji način. Neočekivano, oni pronalaze vezu izvan vizuelno u sudaru ukusa, dodira i zvuka. Veza je senzualna, a unutar nje svako pronalazi nešto.

Two young men - one sighted, one blind - see the world and their bodies in different ways. Unexpectedly, they find a connection beyond the visual in the collision of taste, touch and sound. The connection is sensual, and within it they each find something new.
In the sensitive category, Grant Scicluna's Neon Skin is a vaguely homoerotic dialogue between a visually impaired man (Luke Mullins) and his skinny helper (Martin Sharpe).

Writers: Christopher Isherwood (novel), Tom Ford (written for the screen by), David Scearce
Genre: Drama
Country: USA
Duration: 99 min
Year: 2009

Stars: Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode

A Single Man is a 2009 drama film based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. It is the first film directed by Tom Ford. The film stars Colin Firth, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of George Falconer, a depressed gay British university professor living in Southern California in 1962.

The film premiered on September 11, 2009, at the 66th Venice International Film Festival and went on the film festival circuit. After it screened at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, The Weinstein Company picked it up for distribution in the United States and Germany. An initial limited run in the United States commenced on December 11, 2009, to qualify it for the 82nd Academy Awards with a wider release in early 2010.

Taking place over the course of a single day, November 30, 1962, a month after the Cuban missile crisis, A Single Man is the story of George Falconer (Colin Firth), a middle-aged English college professor living in Los Angeles. George dreams that he encounters the body of his longtime partner, Jim (Matthew Goode), at the scene of the car accident that took Jim’s life eight months earlier. After awakening, George delivers a voiceover discussing the pain and depression he has endured since Jim’s death and his intention to commit suicide that evening.

George receives a phone call from his dearest friend, Charley (Julianne Moore), who projects lightheartedness despite her being equally miserable. George goes about his day putting his affairs in order and focusing on the beauty of isolated events, believing he is seeing things for the last time. Throughout, there are flashbacks to George and Jim’s sixteen-year-long relationship.

During the school day George comes into contact with a student, Kenny Potter (Nicholas Hoult), who shows interest in George and disregards conventional boundaries of student-professor discussion. George also forms an unexpected connection with a Spanish male prostitute, Carlos (Jon Kortajarena). That evening George meets Charley for dinner. Though they initially reminisce and amuse themselves by dancing, Charley’s desire for a deeper relationship with George and her failure to understand his relationship with Jim angers George.

George goes to a bar and discovers that Kenny has followed him. They get a round of drinks, go skinny dipping, and then return to George's house and continue drinking. George passes out and wakes up alone in bed with Kenny asleep in another room. George gets up and while watching Kenny discovers that he had fallen asleep holding George's gun, taken from the desktop, to keep George from committing suicide. George locks the gun away and in a closing voiceover explains how he has rediscovered the ability "to feel, rather than think." As he makes peace with his grief, George suffers a heart attack and dies.

Unique and well-crafted

15 May 2011 | by scootmandutoo (Long Island, New York) – IMDB

I must say that I have seen very few movies that have been paced this slowly, but in this case, it is a testament to the artistry of the director.
In a setting where the pace of life appears to be glacial and change can be a painstakingly slow process, the deliberately slow pacing of some of the scenes was just another way for this film to effectively evoke a mood. There were certain scenes where the only change for an entire minute would be a light going on, or off. Some scenes would linger with a camera a full 10 or 15 seconds after the action or dialogue had ended...just to capture a subtle mood change, or to amplify what was already there.
This is a fascinating piece of work about real people, not the porn star fantasies that populate many other glbt works. This is not to say that the 2 leads are not attractive, as another poster suggested. We all get attracted to different types and these 2 certainly found an attraction to each other.
While I thought that this movie was excellent, I would liked to have seen the romance develop in a more balanced, and less abrupt, fashion. Considering the overall way that Jose gets treated in this film, there could at least have been one truly tender moment to pave the way for how this movie eventually resolved itself.
If the movie has one flaw it was the way the 3 chapters are used to foreshadow what is to come. Once the 3rd chapter title came up there were no surprises and we knew exactly how it was going to end. While the ending made sense, and was satisfying, why the need to foreshadow it?
All in all, a very different type of glbt film that is well worth your time.

Not everyone gets to watch a video of his conception - or wants to. Thibodeaux sure doesn't, but such openness is the exasperating norm for his free-love parents, Hank and Stormy, whose nest Thibodeaux can't wait to leave. Thibodeaux sets off to college seeking a sexless social life but his chastity strategies meet their match when he meets a hottie that unleashes his appetites.. But what this young man thinks he wants collides with the hard reality of desire in the idiosyncratic, unrepentantly sexual comedy-drama, A Lower Power, a gay coming-of-age story where the coming of age isn't about being gay.

GOLDEN-PIN-pic-1The Golden Pin is a student short film focusing on the life of Long (Duangphung), a Vietnamese-Canadian young man who finds himself on the crossroads of following his heart or fulfilling his family’s expectations. Let me tell you, there’s no greater burden for traditional families (disregarding any ethnicity) than to have offspring follow in the “correct” footsteps, so when we hear Long’s father say that he wanted Long to continue the family line because there was no other family member to do so… it feels like a bucket of cold water.
What would you really do being the last one to carry the family name? Sure, there are other options for Long and Ryan (Böhm) to have children of their own and carry their respective family’s name, but to make such decision at that point in their relationship would have seemed rushed. Instead, Long’s mother (Nguyen) decides to tell her son about her own story… though, I feel she was giving me a bit of a mixed signal there.
In the end, The Golden Pin doesn’t really give you the answer Long or us are looking for, instead just poses the question.
Which one would you choose?

Ditto on the Atmosphere!
28 January 2010 | by hoiair (Japan) – IMDB
paperThere's no one thing that stands out in this film. It is like some of those old rock albums that had no singles, but the album was great. This film had a great ensemble cast and it was more like an alternative family than a cast. The music was, at times, quirky at others rich and ambient, both appropriate. Unlike most American films, this film did not tell me how I was suppose to feel; it just produced a complex tapestry of emotions. Strangely, and without giving the ending away, it allowed both a full tragic catharsis while leaving you with a positive feeling on the way out the door. Just the way I like it. And the actors were all really cute... that didn't hurt!
No doubt, one must compare the film to it appropriate genre family members, and credit must be given with consideration of the challenges of budgetary constraints and the challenges that go with that. However, though I agree, it was not "The Outsiders" (but similar), it had a great combination of simplicity contrasted with complexity as some others have said. I was not predictable, though I thought it would be. You cannot possibly predict the ending. It was satisfying on several levels despite the inherent inadequacies within low budget film making.

Taj ih odnos dovodi do emocionalnog i moralnog rastrojstva.

Onako prilično iznenađen sam ga pitao: -Jesmo li i mi bolesni kada samo radili ovo maloprije?-
Kaže on: -Mi nismo pederi, mi smo to uradili onako muški, drugarski.

1I rewatched Brokeback Mountain, a film I had in my top-100, for the first time last month. It is still a strong film but it dropped well out of my top-100. Watching Brotherhood, another film about a gay relationship in an unusual setting, and the burdens of the closet, did a lot to help me understand why. After a brief scene of a gang of neo-Nazis beating up on a gay guy, we cut to Lars (Thure Lindhardt, in a Filmspot nomination worthy performance) sitting in a military office where an officer is telling him he is being denied promotion because he was alleged to have made passes at some of subordinates. He is told it will go away if he quietly departs the Army.

3842-Capt6While this hints at discrimination, our understanding that the story is probably true suggests that it wasn’t an unreasonable decision. However, it leaves Lars separated from his career path and feeling driven that much further into the closet, worsened when his parents, not knowing why he is leaving the Army keep nagging him about the decision.
And so through an acquaintance he falls in with a group of neo-Nazis. This is the film’s first test. We have to believe that he’d stick with the group. It seems pretty clear that Lars is not particularly ideologically connected to the group and a moment a bit later in the film when he expresses a bit of surprise that the neo-Nazi group is homophobic is a bit too naive to be believed, but I did ultimately believe that his need for a group and direction, and perhaps the desire to do something totally not gay like be a neo-Nazi, had me believing.
For the record, wrestling naked with other men in the ocean is good clean hetero fun and don’t let anybody tell you different.
While I don’t understand out gay people being members of clearly homophobic institutions like a neo-Nazi group or the Republican Party, the presence of closeted individuals makes perfect sense at this point.
brotherhood-2009_w320The subsequent relationship feels much more naturalistic than the one in Brokeback Mountain and the story as a whole is more tightly constructed and the fallout that much stronger as a result. The setting itself adds a great element as the rise of the far right movement in Europe, focused around anti-immigration but extending to all the other typical fascist ideals, is quite a real and present concern. Brotherhood was my dictation partly because it was the only one FCM initially offered that was out on DVD, but with other Nordic films with LGBT themes like CINECAST!ing Amal and Let The Right One In placed highly in my top-100, it seemed like a good bet. But my optimism didn’t prepare me for just how good it really was. Brotherhood sits in my top 10 for the year and will be on my filmspot ballot for Best Foreign and Best Debut Film in addition to the acting nomination. As this is the only year it will be eligible I really hope some other people take the time this month to check this out and thanks to FCM for dictating it to me.
As an additional incentive, this is a great movie for those who appreciate elegant Danish bottoms.
