Body Without Soul (1996)

Body Without Soul (1996)
Telo bez duse (original title)

Director: Wiktor Grodecki
Writer: Wiktor Grodecki
Genre: Documentary
Country: Czech Republic
Language: Czech (english subtitles)
Duration: 94 min
Year: 1996

Documentary look at doomed male prostitutes in Prague, ages 15 to 18, who troll at the public swimming pool, the train station, a video arcade, and a disco. After the boys talk about how they got in the game, the camera follows them to the home of Pavel Rousek. Under the name Hans Miller, he makes gay porno videos, primarily for German distribution. Intercut with a movie shoot chez Rousek is an interview that follows him to his day job at a morgue, where he performs an autopsy as he talks about his work. The sex is without protection; the boys are without family. They talk about their bodies and souls, money, their sexual orientation, AIDS, their dreams, and death.

A story that reminds us what it's like to be young and in love, or at least lust. The film is well acted, and the plot is realistic, but the ending is somehow unsatisfying. On it's own it's a nice piece of light cinema, but seeing it along with the other shorts in a boy's life 2, it made a very nice addition. I recommend for anyone, straight or gay.

English:
Paul Prentice (Rupert Graves) and Karl Foyle (Steven Mackintosh) were close friends during their prep school days. Prentice used to defend Karl from the violent attacks of their classmates, who ridiculed Karl for being effeminate.
Some years later they are reunited literally by accident, when Prentice, on the motorcycle he drives as a courier, runs into the cab that Karl (who has undergone sexual reassignment surgery and become Kim) is riding in. Paul is initially surprised to discover that Karl has become Kim, but asks her out to get re-acquainted.
Their first date goes badly and Kim assumes that it's because Prentice is nervous about being seen in public with her. Prentice brings her flowers at her workplace (as a verse writer for a greeting card company) and they go out again. This date works out better and they end up back at Prentice's place listening to music.

The two continue to spend time together, with Prentice teaching Kim how to ride a motorcycle. Their next dinner date, at Kim's place, is disastrous. Prentice, struggling to understand transgenderism, drinks too much and ends up in the courtyard outside Kim's apartment, exposing his penis and ranting. The police arrive and arrest him for indecent exposure. Kim places a hand on one of the officers and he arrests her for "interfering" with an officer. In the paddy wagon one of the officers makes crude remarks about Kim and places his hand under her skirt. Prentice intervenes and is beaten by the officer.

At the police station, Prentice is charged with assaulting the officer. Kim, his only witness, is terrified of being in trouble and intimidated by the police into keeping silent. She flees to her sister's home.
At Prentice's trial on the assault charges, Kim is able to screw up her courage and testify for Prentice. While he is still convicted, he receives only a token fine. A reporter at the courthouse tries to buy Kim and Prentice's story but they refuse. They return to Kim's place, where Prentice is surprised and delighted to discover that he and Kim are sexually as well as emotionally compatible.
Prentice, desperate for money following the repossession of his motorcycle, sells Kim's and his story to a London tabloid. With the story splashed all over the papers, Kim thinks she's going to be sacked from the greeting card company. Instead, her boss stands behind her. As the film draws to a close, it's revealed that Kim and Prentice are living together and that it was Kim's idea for Prentice to sell the story.

Description:
Podsjetilo me na Adu Bojanu. On zgodan al nekako sirov. Odem u kafanu da popijem pivo, a on zamnom.

Specialist gay soft porn outlet Pride Video has concocted quite a few lush wish fulfillment sagas (the E.M. Forster flavored HAZY DAYS OF SUMMER being a particular personal favorite), but this is their Magnum Opus if you will. Though shot on video, it's exquisitely photographed and superbly edited with tasteful dissolves whenever the sex action tends to get a little hot 'n' heavy, all of it underscored with a beautiful original soundtrack to boot. The story is basically simple but well-told.

Nominally straight if slightly confused Sean Benedict meets pouting beach boy Johan Paulik - taking a break from his explicit Bel Ami endeavors - on his summer holidays, much to the dismay of girlfriend Rebecca Tremain who can see the attraction between the two men long before they're aware of it.

Lots of tease and groping as hot and explicit as the soft core format will allow with Paulik and Matthew Anders as his roving eye boyfriend already well established poster boys for hardcore enthusiasts with a yearning for the Old World brand of porn popularized by George Duroy. Subtle direction by "Xavier" and decent acting, especially by Tremain who looks rather like Jamie Lee Curtis after a rough night out. Romantics will eat it up. Perfect not-quite-porn for the lonely.

Zadnjih dana malo češće postam na blogu jer sledeće sedmice idem na put! Uh kako mrzim seminare!

English:

On his family's farm in rural Iowa, young Jack Gudmanson is wrestling with his sexual identity, not an easy thing to do in the macho world of the Midwest. But things become clearer for him when he discovers via a rusty old lunch box filled with gay magazines that his father, killed in Vietnam, led a double life down on the farm. But as liberating as the discovery is for Jack, it is painful for his grandfather and mother, who have tried for years to keep it a family secret. Now Jack must decide whether to share this new information with his younger sister or allow it to remain buried a while longer.

Beautiful Thing (1996)

Beautiful Thing (1996)

Još jedan coming out film. Tinejđerska priča, kakvih je danas sve više. Heh u moje vrijeme toga baš i nije bilo.
Neču vam mnogo pisati o ovom filmu tim prije što odličan opis ovog filma možete naći ovdje.

BEAUTIFUL THING

Beautiful ThingUloge: Glen Berry, Linda Henry i Scott Neal

REVIEW
This tender story of two teenager's sexual coming of age in a working-class development in London is an inspiring, tender, emotional tale. Jamie is a reserved teen, close to his pub manager mom, who prefers old Hollywood musicals to sports. His friendship with his hunky neighbor Ste, a fellow student who suffers through a troubled family life, soon develops into a sexual and eventually a loving relationship. How the two boys tentatively handle their nascent sexual drives and how it affects their family and friends is handled in both a fresh and surprisingly upbeat fashion. A wonderful comedy-drama and possibly the best coming out film to date.

Lilies - Les feluettes (1996)

Lilies - Les feluettes (1996)

No neću vam opisivati film, pogledajte ga sami.

Imaginative, retrospective revalation of brutal homophobic events in a young ménage-ŕ-trois, based on love, betrayal and revenge.

Brent Carver as Countess Marie Laure de Tilly1952: Bishop Bilodeau os to hear the last confession of the terminally ill prisoner Simon Doucet. Having bribed some of the guards and secured the help of the chaplain, around a dozen inmates lock the chapel and transform it into a theatre. The bishop is forced to watch a dramatisation of his and Doucet's lives in 1912, which had led to the incarceration of the now sick man. The played-out scenes, in which the prisoners take over both male and female roles, turn into real memories, but still with the prisoners playing their parts. The love story between the young Simon Doucet and Count Vallier de Tilly is gradually unfolded, and three factors enter into the plot. Jean Bilodeau, unsure of his homosexuality, the French woman Lydie-Anne de Rozier, and a society which does not understand gay love. No one taking part knows the full story and how it ends and, as the truth is brought to light, it is the bishop who makes a confession and may not come out of it unscathed...

* John Greyson is a political filmmaker who has been arousing attention for 16 years with partly fictional, falsified or musical documentaries on subjects of lesbians & gays, workers, racism and Aids (Zero Patience ). Today, in the late 90's, a time when the North American continent is being swept by a tide of right-wing anti-lesbian anti-gay Christian fundamentalism, he hits back with Lilies, attacking the ignorance which misunderstands love and fosters intolerance. As a basis for his film he uses Michel Marc Bouchard's stage play of the same name, written in 1987 (the French title being Les Feluettes). Although a theatrical atmosphere is deliberately recalled time after time, Lilies is anything but a stage play. With imaginative and playful innovations Greyson takes us into a world of images and imagination, and surprises us with the natural and unreserved readiness of the inmates to sympathise with homosexual love and to play the parts of women and gays. Lilies is a movie work of art, in which the setting of a declaration of love in a bath-tub in a prison chapel, or, as the case may be, in the middle of a forest, captures the audience as much as the intensity of its interpersonal feelings and tragic events does. New Queer Cinema will be enriched by a new perspective from this hit from Quebec.

* Lilies combines all the old themes of gay cinema – homoerotica (including the masochistic element of Saint Sebastian), prison, church, drag, love denied and social prejudices – with something new, well within the artistic demands of New Queer Cinema. This has already catapulted Lilies to the distinction of being one of the most important gay films of the coming season, and will appeal to more heterosexual audiences than is usual in this genre

John Greyson’s cinematic breakthrough came in 1993 with the release of the outrageous satirical musical-comedy Zero Patience.

This is not a feature film, but a collection of 10 shorts. The total running time is 70 minutes. All except the first are in French with English subtitles. All are either directly or obliquely (sometimes very obliquely indeed) about AIDS. None are exceptional. I have been known to enjoy DVD collections of short gay-themed films. If some of them are not very good, at least I enjoy the different perspectives that filmmakers bring in their examination of what it means to lead a gay life. For me, none of these films was remotely interesting. If you are looking for some smart, sexy, French short films, rent the collection of François Ozon's short films that has been released to DVD.

Different aspects of homosexual romance are explored in this compendium of short vignettes. The film is designed as sort of a gay version of 1994's 3,000 Scenarios to Combat a Virus, an anthology that was comprised of 30 short films -- made by some of France's best
directors -- out of story ideas submitted by school children on ways to deal with the AIDS virus. In this film however, the selection committee had no age limit and received about a thousand potential stories. The ten selected vignettes (three of which do not deal with AIDS at all ) encompass a broad look at the subject and range for the tale of a lesbian teen trying to come out to her parents, to a gay man who shocks his lover by claiming to be pregnant, to another man's reminiscence of a brief affair with an HIV-positive man. The vignettes were originally shown individually on French television. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Skin and Bone (1996)

Skin and Bone (1996)

IMDB
Very much enjoyed this nasty, little portrait of the L.A. hustling scene where aspiring actors find themselves at the bottom of the barrel while they wait, usually in vain, for their big break. The acting was surprisingly good for this low budget production. Clearly, the director didn't worry about shying away or sanitizing his subject matter. Sure, there's not much here we haven't already seen, but never this graphic. Which makes it all the more honest. And the avalanche of male nudity gave this an edgy sexiness that's missing from other similar pictures like My Own Private Idaho or Johns. How can you have a movie about male exploitation and prostitution and not show nudity as they did in those two films? In this culture, I still find naked men on film to be novel and highly erotic. Alan Boyce as the hapless and sexy hustler Dean is particularly appealing, and he handles his descent into sex object status with disarming charm and innocence. Hope to see more of him soon.

Skin and Bone is a 1996 drama film. It played the film festival circuit in 1996 and 1997 before its limited American theatrical release in 1998. The film features a number of songs by the queercore band Pansy Division and includes a cameo by David Arquette playing a client (Arquette would the same year play a hustler in the film johns).

Plot summary

Skin and Bone follows the stories of three Los Angeles-area hustlers, Harry, Dean and Billy, and Ghislaine, their pimp. Harry (B. Wyatt) is the most experienced of the three. Despite his experience he's managed to delude himself into believing that he's not a prostitute but an "actor" providing "fantasies." He is in fact trying to pursue an acting career but has been unsuccessful. Ghislaine (Dillenberg) relies on him to help her train new recruits, including Dean (Boyce) and Billy (Scullin). Harry services male and female clients and always acts as a "top;" many of his male clients hire him to beat them.

Billy is somewhat goofy and absent-minded and repeatedly finds himself mistaking the wrong man for his client. In one such instance he ends up falling in love with the guy and they plan for Billy to get out of the business and start a life together. Tragically, Billy mistakes another man for a client in a public restroom and that man stabs him to death.

Harry goes on a casting call for a cop movie. The casting director asks him if he will do nudity, clearly implying a casting couch scenario. Harry says he's an artist and loses the role.

Dean is performing as a "nude cleaner" for a client. Dean learns that the client was paralyzed in combat and is still longing for the boy he fell in love with in the Marines, who was killed. The client can still achieve an erection and Dean has sex with him.

Harry is at an appointment with one of his regulars, a uniform fetishist who's called "The General." Usually he has Harry beat him but for this session, unknown to Harry, he's arranged something different with Ghislaine. After showing Harry a picture of himself in which he closely resembles Harry, the General orders Harry to strip. When Harry hesitates, the General attacks him from behind, binds his hands with tape and rapes him.

Harry has his acting agent set up an "interview" with a casting director. He lets the casting director fuck him. Following the interview, Harry goes over to Dean's and finds him sitting alone burning himself with a cigarette. He tells Harry that he ran away from home after his father, to teach him a lesson, had him arrested at age 14 for shoplifting a candy bar. Dean was put in a cell with a number of men who took turns raping him.

Harry gets cast in a small role as a cop and on the set so impresses the producers that they offer him a part in a series.

Ghislaine calls Harry and sends him to the local morgue with $2,500 to bribe an attendant. At the morgue Harry sees Billy's body and figures out that the money is so Ghislaine can acquire it for a client. He confronts Ghislaine and accuses her of setting up Billy's murder. Harry tells Ghislaine he wants out and he wants to take Dean with him. Ghislaine agrees, as long as Harry and Dean perform one final scene.

The scene is a cop/prisoner scenario which starts out with the cop beating the prisoner then the prisoner overpowering the cop, binding and beating and finally shooting him. Harry plays the cop and Dean the prisoner. Harry, bound and gagged, spots Ghislaine switching his gun (loaded with blanks) for another gun but can't get Dean to understand the danger. As Ghislaine and the client watch and the client tapes the scene, Dean pulls the trigger and kills Harry.

Six months later, Dean is living on the streets. Ghislaine finds him and convinces him to return to work.

The film is broken up into color and black and white sequences, with black and white usually denoting that the scene involves one or more of the hustlers engaged with a client. The black and white scenes always indicate that one or more of the characters on-screen is fantasizing, and it's not always the client having the fantasy. Interestingly, when Dean has sex with the paralyzed client the scene is in color. There are some inconsistencies on the color/black and white scheme. For instance, Harry has an S/M scene that's all in color. Harry has a number of fantasies about a woman he formerly knew (and who apparently is dead) and those are occasionally in color. In the final scene, Harry and Dean are in black and white but when the client and Ghislaine are shown watching they're in color, raising the question of exactly who is having the fantasy.

Une robe d'été (A Summer Dress) is a 1996 short film directed by François Ozon about a lagging gay relationship that is refueled in an unexpected way.

Luc (Frédéric Mangenot), a young man in his late teens / early twenties, spends his holiday at the sea together with his slightly older and decidedly more effeminate boyfriend Sébastien (Sébastien Charles). At the house they have rented, Sébastien's constant dancing and preening drives Luc crazy and so he heads to the beach, hoping to find some solitude.

There, he meets Lucia (Lucia Sanchez), who suggests for the two of them to have sex immediately. Luc obliges, perhaps also to find out if maybe he is heterosexual after all. During their encounter, Luc's clothes are stolen. After having sex Lucia learns that Luc is gay and has never been with a woman.

Lucia lends Luc her summer dress (hence the title), so he can go home by bike. Wearing a woman's dress improves Luc's mood as people whistle after him and he gets back a sense of freedom. Back at the house, Luc surprises Sébastien, and the two have passionate sex in the kitchen, with Sébastien referring to Luc as his "beautiful girl".

The next day, Luc brings Lucia, who is just leaving, back her summer dress, but she refuses, certainly knowing how important it will be in the sexual role play between the two men and then kisses Luc goodbye.

Echte Kerle (1996) - Regular Guys - Repost

Echte Kerle (1996) - Regular Guys

Policajac i njegov novi prijatelj postaju prijatelji i cimeri.

English:

Belying its rather humorless national reputation, Germany has produced many great gay comedies: The Trio, Killer Condom and Maybe... Maybe Not to name just a few. Now add Regular Guys, this lively comedy to the list. Christoph (Christoph M. Ohrt) is a typical macho (read homophobic) Frankfurt detective who is dumped by his two-timing fiancée and thrown out of their apartment. He proceeds to get real drunk and wakes up in the morning in the bed of the very cute and very naked Edgar (Tim Bergmann), a gay auto mechanic. Confused at what lead him to Edgar's bed and what he may have done, the seemingly straight but homeless Christoph takes up Edgar’s offer and moves in with him.

Christoph Schwenk (Christoph M. Ohrt) plays a police officer in Frankfurt who finds his fiance with another man. He loses her, along with all of his belongings, his car, and his home. After a drunken night, he wakes up in an unknown bed, next to an unknown man. This new bedfellow, Edgar (Tim Bergmann), is a gay car mechanic who deals in stolen cars. Christoph can't find any other housing, so he has to stay with Edgar -- though Christoph is not pleased that Edgar has fallen in love with him. Along comes Cristoph's new colleague Helen (Carin C. Tietze), who is also attracted to him. And rumors fly at the office because he has been seen with the gay car-dealer.

The best scene of the movie takes place in the police station, when two other officers try to out Christoph as gay. He answers, "In this funhouse where one is beating his wife, the next one is blackmailing thieves, and the third is having sex with illegal immigrant girls; in this funhouse, I will play the gay one from now on."

Though Edgar's mother expresses the motto of the film ("These days, everything is possible isn't it?"), the end is not a happy one for gay audiences hoping that Christoph will fall in love with Edgar. On the contrary, Christoph gets Helen, and Edgar goes off with a colleague who had been only a minor character in the film. Except for the sudden and illogical ending, the film is very funny, and well-paced.

The Birdcage (1996)

The Birdcage (1996)

Jutros sam se probudio neuobičajeno rano. Kiša udarila kao da nikada neće stati. Očito da ću još jedan dan provesti doma.
Sinoć sam čekao da me Buco zovne. Pustio sam jedan film i pojačao ton jer je imao dobru muziku. Nisam čuo poziv. A čekao sam 4 sata da mu čujem glas.

The Birdcage je američka verzija francuskog filma La cage de foley.

The comic brilliance of Robin Williams combines with the gifts of Oscar winning director Mike Nichols in a contemporary American version of the outrageous French comedy La Cage Aux Folles.

Two-time Academy Award winners Gene Hackman (Unforgiven, The French Connection) and Dianne Wiest (Bullets Over Broadway, Hannah and Her Sisters), and Broadway star Nathan Lane ("Guys and Dolls") also head the cast of this insightful comedy that gives new meaning to the phrase straighten up and fly right.

As modem as this minute, as pertinent as today, this Elaine May- scripted film portrays Armand (ROBIN WILLIAMS) and Albert (NATHAN LANE) as having a home life many would envy. They share a long-term committed relationship encompassing their lives and careers and have together raised Armand's son Val (DAN FUTTERMAN) into a caring, responsible and mature young man. So when Val arrives home and announces his engagement to the daughter of an ultra-conservative U.S. Senator, what choice is there but to accept his decision with love?

Meanwhile, Senator Keeley (GENE HACKMAN) and his wife (DIANNE WIEST) are facing bigger problems than their daughter's (CALISTA FLOCKHART) unexpected engagement. The senator is watching his right-wing constituency evaporate with the scandalous demise of his closest political ally. A visit to their future in-laws could be just the thing to take the public's focus off the Keeley's messy predicament.

With the impending visit of his fiancee's rigid family, Val asks his father to straighten up the apartment just a bit. All it entails is the removal of Armand's art collection, furnishings, clothes, job ... and Albert.

Easier said than done. The arrival of the Keeleys sets off a comedy of errors as Armand and Albert attempt to play out the roles of your typical American husband and "wife."
