Dennis Harvey
Film Critic

Billed as “a holiday movie for all of us,” “Scrooge & Marley” is in fact very niche, being of and for that segment of the gay community that enjoys watered-down camp and syrupy empowerment messages, which are not to be confused with the good kinds of either. This spin on “A Christmas Carol” delivers a heavy-handed morality play that Dickens himself might have found gauche, sugar-coated with weak songs and broad performances. Playing scattered theatrical runs between now and Christmas, the pic figures to do modest but better biz from its home-format release next month.

Raining on his employees’ seasonal cheer (even firing one of them), Ebenezer, aka Ben, Scrooge (David Pevsner) shutters the gay nightclub he ripped off long ago from a former benefactor (the inevitable Bruce Vilanch) and settles in for a grumpy solo Christmas Eve. But he’s visited first by Marley (Tim Kazurinsky), his former partner in ruthless gay-community bilking, now a salvation-seeking denizen of purgatory.

As in the Dickens story, three more ghosts follow: Christmas Past (Ronnie Kroell), who helps Ben revisit his homophobic father and other contributors to his greedy, mean adult personality; Present (Megan Cavanagh), who shows how forgiving the people around him are; and Future (JoJo Baby), who promises Scrooge’s customarily bleak reward. Scrooge redeems himself, natch, though the maudlin final scenes are cringe-inducing.

Of course, it’s impossible to do a “Carol” without sentimentality — Scrooge’s whole journey is about thawing his heart. But “S&M” (get it?) is so crude and literal-minded in its gay reinterpretation that no genuine emotion can get past the script’s compilation of cliches. Execution isn’t much better, with a low budget that might’ve been turned to a more imaginative pic’s advantage, but here is charmlessly obvious, with tacky f/x and stagy interiors; indeed, the material could translate to a proscenium with little alteration.
Shot in Chicago, the pic clumsily uses frequent blackouts to transition between scenes in a mediocre tech/design package.

Life consists of many segments, each of which in turn accounts for a piece of other pictures. They are optimistic pictures with light of hope, of expected solution and final satisfaction. However, they are also darker images when one goes astray in the situations that are beyond imaginations and belief. The most important point lies in: every picture contains in itself a certain meaning. Good or bad frames do not affect the meaningful contents when one knows where and how to look. Beauty is in the eye of the viewer, and the beauty of this film fills the audiences with hope and prejudice, with trust and betrayal, with short-term happiness and long-lasting endurance in bitterly and the rapidly changing life cycle.

Rudy is a man who performs nightly at a gay bar. He comes across his neighbor, a lady with sign of drug abuse. She has a son named Marco. "Marco was a sweet kid and smart and funny. He had a smile that could light up the room. He loved junk food. Chocolate doughnuts were his drug of choice". He is just innocent and childlike beautiful like others. Unluckily and ultimately sad, he has a Down syndrome. When his mother left him unexpectedly, the life of Rudy and Marco intervenes with each other.

Paul is an excellent lawyer. He has divorced his wife because he realized that something is different. He understands what he really wants, and the moment he meets Rudy proves the immortally legendary tale "Love at the first sight". Together they go on a journey of protecting and fighting for Marco as well as for themselves so that Marco will have a safe and good environment for upbringing. Together they surpassed things and succeeded, to a certain extent.

On that journey, audiences witness many segments of life in which there are supports, there are oppositions. What does not kill us makes us stronger. What always stands by them make them strongest, and that is their love, their will, and their hope. Sometimes, it is false hope and is proven by the evily opposite sides, but the film does give us a far more valuable message: Mistake is born every day. We hardly notice it until time tells us. That moment is when we are struck by the consequences of our own neglect.

Being gay is difficult enough. Being a child with a disease is not at all easy. If, for one moment, we rethink of what we have all thought, is the problem created by the way we define things? The film marvelous demystified it. Gay or straight, handicapped or normal kid, they are all humans. Between humans, there are indestructibly equal rights, which are seemingly forgotten and deliberately neglected by a considerable number of people. Imagine you are gay, or your child has the Down syndrome, you will not simply suicide or throw your child away, will you? If you really might, what is the reason? And no matter what the reason is, life is not born to be killed like that because the meaning of life is limitless beyond human recognition and knowledge. If we have the opportunities to live a normal life, we should help others because if everyone thinks in such way, there will be time when we receive help from others.
Unfortunately, as stated above, "Mistake is born every day. We hardly notice it until time tells us. That moment is when we are struck by the consequences of our own neglect."

A Magnificent Haunting (2012)

Language: Italian
Duration: 105 min
Year: 2012

Although it is a gay film, it does not focus on gay issue (love, cruelty of life, paradox of choices, etc.) but focuses on the normal life and thought of a human, his name is Pietro.   Pietro wants to be an actor, and endeavours to do all that he can to become one, but he just fails. When he has his own apartment and the upcoming dinner with his love, bitter truth reveals to the viewers what they do not know until then about Pietro, about the way he is obsessed with love. However, and also marvelously handling, the film immediately draws our attention to the other and also the biggest event in the film. Pietro meets ghosts. Little by little, Pietro finds way to understand the existence of the ghosts.
Also, bit by bit does he learn from those "artist" ghosts who were actors and actresses at their time. Will luck smile on Pietro? Viewers will decide for themselves when Pietro continuously "loses" the expected and "gets" the unexpected during his encounters in life.   At the end of the film, truth reveals about the death of the actors and actress, the reason why they become ghosts.
Again, tenderly tackling, the film draws our attention to the emotions and actions of Pietro when viewers observe his eyes when he watches another man who is his neighbor and also with those eyes at the final stage do viewers understand now there are things more important than just falling in love and living for oneself. The happy life is a life which gives away happiness to others', and the meaningful life is the life which is not born with meaningful things but has to create meanings for itself.
Intelligent comedy with meanings, up and down contexts with purposes, real drama with truthful emotions and feelings, the film combines and diverts things into a tasty soup. Viewers' role is to sip it slowly and tenderly…

Like most Therapists who spend their working day advising people how to get their act together, Corey was not that hot at getting his own life on the right track. When he finally proposed to his muscle-bound airhead personal trainer boyfriend, Jon just freaked out and ran off into the arms (and bed) of the nearest woman. He had finally come of out of his gay closet to discover that he was bisexual, or maybe straight even.
Corey crying his eyes poured out his woes to his best friend who was his lesbian sister Kelsey, who insisted that there was only one way forward for him viz. Grindr. And soon as she had taught her brother how to use this Gay dating app. the first man he spotted was the Pizza delivery guy. Pete is hotter than hell: handsome, intelligent, articulate and is running the pizza store whilst caring for his sick Uncle the owner. He's a saint and too perfect to be true, but this is the movies after all.

The two men have a very successful date and geeky Corey now has another muscle-bound super-fit boyfriend, but before they can even think about even living happily ever after, they must get through a couple of melodramas first. It turns out that Melissa, the woman who the newly proclaimed bisexual Jon is dating, is also a client of Corey's and she insists on telling him every intimate detail of her new relationship not knowing that he was her predecessor. Eventually he tells her that his appointment book is full and she should go find another therapist.

Meanwhile Jon decides he really prefers Corey after all so he comes back and they immediately jump in to bed only to be caught in flagrento by saint Pete. Before they can even get their underwear back on, in storms Melissa who had given Jon a lift and had been waiting in the car outside. And just before they can all say scream 'How could you ? etc', then into this now rather packed house comes Kelsey to say that she is broke and her coffee shop business is in Foreclosure and she's leaving town.

It's a romantic comedy so you know that in this very lightweight fluffy piece it will work out in the end so everyone will have big smiles on the faces and a hot body to share their beds. Well most of them anyway. This one is cute, thanks mainly to a good cast, and not just the ex-underwear models who play two of the leads.

A good reflection on how grief is
12 October 2014 | by Gglove (Ireland) – IMDB

The movie starts with James grieving for the loss of his brother, the funeral scene was really well done but sad at the same time. However when you move along with the film, you get to know the homophobic folk that attended the funeral. Then suddenly James twin brother's ex boyfriend Adam comes to the rescue in a very brave way. I didn't like the way James took these guys side in the first place but thankfully Adam dragged into the good side of being gay. Adam had the good personality in him when he was trying to cheer up James grief of his brother regardless of being a dipstick but anyway! At the end of the film, James damages Sam's car window and you have the enlightenment touch like a message saying its OK to be gay. Such an inspiring film to lighten up your heart :)

Teens Like Phil (2012)Phil, a shy, insecure teenager growing up in a affluent suburb, is trapped in the painful throes of adolescence. He's struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. At his elite private school, Phil is picked on by his former friend and love interest, Adam. Adam frequently lashes out with violence against Phil and enjoys humiliating him in the locker room. As the bullying intensifies, both at school and at home, the back story of Phil and Adam's ill-fated relationship is revealed, leading to a horrific final assault.

173902880201311031729393346951306245_000Silent Youth is a film for misfits, dreamers and lovers. It's the classic story of a coming out, but it focuses on the moments one tends to quickly forget: the first approach, the creaking of the chair while sitting across from each other, not knowing what to say. And it's about the silence.
The film tells of the encounter and slow approximation of two young men in Berlin. Marlo, who claims to be visiting his girlfriend, wonders the streets of Berlin where he meets Kirill. He begins to follow him, which seems to impress Kirill. A strange relationship begins to develop between the two of them. The more Kirill exposes about himself, the more confusing it gets for Marlo. They float next to one another, not knowing what the next step could be. Is there really someone to talk to in this strange world? Someone who is just as confused? And isn't it inevitably for this person to be just as crazy? Silent Youth is a film about feeling locked into yourself, but most of all it is a film about love.

AKA is a 2002 drama film, the first by director and writer Duncan Roy. The film is set in the late 1970s in Britain and deals with the story of Dean, an 18-year-old boy who assumes another identity in order to enter high society. Dean then meets David, an older gay man who desires him and Benjamin, a young Texan hustler. It is largely an autobiographical account of Duncan Roy's early life.
The screen consists of a row of three frames, showing three perspectives.

Dva prijatelja, Jeremy i Alphonso provode nekoliko sedmica u Bruklinu. Jeremy opsjednut patkama i njihovim migracijama piše školski rad o tome, a Alphonse radije provodi vrijeme vozeći biciklo.

“The Ducks’ Migration” is a fiction short film about the sexual discovery and growth of two teenage boys who coincide in contemporary New York City.

“Two boys and close family friends, Jeremy and Alphonse, American and French, spend a few weeks together in Jeremy’s house in Brooklyn. Shabbat-Dinner-2The year is 1999, and Shabbat Dinner is boring as usual for William Shore. His mother has invited two crazy hippies and their son and is doing her best to show off, his father is berating their oddball guests, and he doesn't have much in common with their son Virgo. That is, until Virgo tells him that he has just come out as gay. In William's room, the boys speak directly to each other about themselves, while just a few feet away the adults discuss trivialities about prep school, marrying Jewish, and nonfat ice cream. It’s not just another Friday night.

The film presents a realistic high school experience in lieu of a heavyhanded message, and in doing so encourages viewers to come to their own conclusions.

David Bowie & the Story of Ziggy Stardust (2012)

dbcc300David Bowie & the Story of Ziggy Stardust (2012)

Director: James Hale
Genre: Documentary
Country: UK
Year: 2012
Duration: 60 min

Stars: Jarvis Cocker, David Bowie, Marc Almond, Rodney Bingenheimer, Trevor Bolder, John Cambridge

Both a visual flashback and a telling of the life and birth of the alter ego that was David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust.

db1The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is arguably the most important album in the mind-blowing career of David Bowie. Released in 1972, it's the record that set the mercurial musician on course to becoming one of the best-known pop stars on the planet. In just over a year, Bowie's messianic Martian invaded the minds of the nation's youth with a killer combination of extraterrestrial rock 'n' roll and outrageous sexuality, all delivered in high-heeled boots, multi-coloured dresses and extravagant make-up. In Bowie's own words, Ziggy was 'a cross between Nijinsky and Woolworths', but this unlikely culture clash worked - Ziggy turned Bowie into stardust.

db2This documentary tells the story of how Bowie arrived at one of the most iconic creations in the history of pop music. The songs, the hairstyles, the fashion and the theatrical stage presentation that merged together to turn David Bowie into the biggest craze since the Beatles. Ziggy's instant success gave the impression that he was the perfectly-planned pop star. But, as the film reveals, it had been a momentous struggle for David Bowie to hit on just the right formula that would take him to the top.

db3Narrated by fan Jarvis Cocker, it reveals Bowie's mission to the stars through the musicians and colleagues who helped him in his unwavering quest for fame - a musical voyage that led Bowie to doubt his true identity, eventually forcing the sudden demise of his alien alter ego, Ziggy.

Contributors include Trevor Bolder (bass player, Spiders from Mars), Woody Woodmansey (drummer, Spider from Mars), Mike Garson (Spiders' keyboardist), Suzi Ronson (Mick Ronson's widow, who gave Bowie that haircut), Ken Scott (producer), Elton John (contemporary and fan), Lindsay Kemp (Bowie's mime teacher), Leee Black Childers (worked for Mainman, Bowie's production company), Cherry Vanilla (Bowie's PA/press officer), George Underwood (Bowie's friend), Mick Rock (Ziggy's official photographer), Steve Harley, Marc Almond, Holly Johnson, Peter Hook, Jon Savage, Peter Doggett and Dylan Jones
