From Huffingtonpost By Geoffrey R. Stone

The other day I had the privilege of attending an advance screening of the forthcoming movie The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. I am not a movie reviewer, so I will not offer an evaluation of the movie -- other than to say that it is superb.

9What particularly interests me is the story itself and the extraordinary range of deeply important issues it poses. The Imitation Game traces the real-life tale of Alan Turing, the brilliant and highly idiosyncratic British scientist and philosopher whose secret contributions during World War II saved the lives of an estimated 14 million individuals by enabling the Allies to win the war much sooner than would otherwise have been possible.

Still in his twenties, Turing led a small cohort of odd-ball cryptographers in a top secret effort to discover the secret of the Nazis' Enigma machine. It was through the use of this machine that the Nazis were able to send encrypted messages to their forces throughout the world. It was, at the time, the most effective and unbreakable code ever invented.

1212

Operating out of Hut 8 in Bletchley Park, Turing's genius and persistence enabled him to invent what was essentially the world's first computer, which finally broke the secrets of the Enigma machine. Although other Allied nations were trying with dogged determination to achieve this outcome, only Turing succeeded.

tumblr_ni6u0kQUXH1u0z243o1_500But that was only the beginning. Even after breaking the Nazi code, the question arose of what to do with this secret knowledge. The goal was not just to break the code, but to use the information gained in order to thwart the Nazi war effort. This had to be done carefully and selectively, because if the Nazis realized that the English had penetrated their code they would simply stop using the Enigma machine.

Thus, to use their knowledge to best effect, the English had to exercise restraint. They could use the decoded information only in carefully selected circumstances. Frequently, they would have to forego its use and permit the Nazis to succeed in battles in order to protect what was now their secret weapon. Turing and his crew played a central role in figuring out how to use the information without giving away their secret.

With end of the war, the British decided to keep secret the fact that they had broken the Nazi code. This was strategic. Other nations, thinking that the Enigma machine was unbreakable, used it themselves for decades after World War II, without realizing that the British could decode their messages. Turning's extraordinary achievement therefore remained locked away in the national security closet in order to leave the British with this advantage.

10Alan Turing was in the closet in another way, as well. He was a homosexual. A few years after World War II ended, he was arrested for gross indecency -- otherwise known as homosexual conduct. Although perhaps the greatest hero of World War II, Turing could not reveal the secret of his contribution. He was convicted and, rather than spend two years in prison, accepted the penalty chemical castration, a common punish for homosexuals under British law. The belief at the time was that homosexuality was a mental illness that could be "treated" in this manner.

Suffering from the ill effects of this barbarous medication, Alan Turing committed suicide in 1952, with his contributions to Western civilization still unknown. It remained so for almost half-a-century. In 2009, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown finally issued a public apology for the "appalling" treatment of the man who, according to Winston Churchill, had made "the single biggest contribution to Allied victory in the war against Nazi Germany."

This is a deeply moving and powerful story. The Imitation Game , which opens in theaters in December, is a stunning movie.

Yossi & Jagger (2002)

Yossi_jaggerYossi & Jagger (2002)

Director: Eytan Fox
Writer: Avner Bernheimer
Genre: Drama, Romance, War Country: Israel
Year: 2002
Duration: 65 min

Stars: Ohad Knoller, Yehuda Levi and Assi Cohen

yossi-and-jagger-knoller-levi"Yossi and Jagger" compounds the hell of war with the agony of having to keep one's sexuality a secret. The movie is also surprisingly lighthearted, thanks to Israeli director Eytan Fox's deft touch with comedy and old- fashioned romance.
Based on a true story and written for the screen by Avner Bernheimer, "Yossi and Jagger" captures the camaraderie and nervous energy of young soldiers at war. At a snowy outpost on the Israel-Lebanon border, the quarters are cramped, danger lurks around every corner, and sexual high jinks and general silliness take precedence over preparing for battle.
Spirits run high despite the troops' exhaustion. "It's biological warfare! " an army cook cries upon discovering the food in the camp fridge has spoiled. Two soldiers, crouched and ready to take on the enemy, kill time with a game of "who's better": "Popeye or Brutus?" "Michelle Pfeiffer or Sharon Stone?"
YossiAndJaggerSecret lovers Yossi and Jagger (Ohad Knoller and Yehudi Levi), desperate for time alone, embark on a "mission" into the wilderness, and director Fox exploits the winter backdrop for a lustrous, truly romantic love scene. Much of the scene's power comes from seeing Knoller's Yossi, the butch company commander, melt in the presence of his beau. Yossi's affectionate glances turn to flickers of shame once the pair are back at camp, in front of others.
Levi brings an impish charm to Jagger, but the character (nicknamed after the rock star) is more described than he is played. His fellow soldiers talk about how great he is, but he doesn't talk much himself, and when he does, it's mostly to berate Yossi about being closeted. Levi is a big soap star in Israel, so maybe his character's charms could be assumed when the film played in his home country.
Another soldier fancies a female colleague, but she's got a big crush on Jagger. Assi Cohen makes palpable this fellow's sexual frustration and his anger at having to compete with "sensitive" Jagger. The Betty Grable of the outfit, a saucy radio operator named Goldie, is shtupping the unit's married colonel -- an affair conducted practically in the open. Illicit heterosexuality, apparently, is far preferable to committed homosexuality in the Israeli military.
-- Advisory: This film contains raw language, violence, sexual situations.

My Little Boy (2007)

My Little Boy (2007)

Year: 2007
Genre: Short, Drama
Director: Matthias Vom Schemm
Duration: 19 min
Country Germany
Actors: André Röhner, Dominik Glaubitz, Hildegard Vom Schemm, Katia Kandziora, Markus Klauk, Tom Wlaschiha, Volker Büdt

Description:
With a harsh political context, this period drama packs a strong punch. It's about Erich (Rohner), a photographer in 1934 Germany who's in love with a stormtrooper, Wolfgang (Wlaschiha). They meet secretly in Erich's photography studio, since a new edict has decreed that homosexuality is illegal -- and punishible by death. This is especially a problem as stormtroopers are enforcing this law, and Wolfgang's colleagues might not be too far away. So it's unsurprising that Erich wants to emigrate. But Wolfgang wants to serve his country. This serious conflict between two men gives the film a meaty centre that transcends the political and historical issues, especially since they're so well played, and their interaction has a strongly sensual tone. While recreating the period with an attention to detail, filmmaker Von Schemm also captures a vivid sense of sadness, as Erich earlier photographs his friend Karl (Glaubitz), who's also being forced out of his social circle by the increasingly oppressive regime. In just 20 minutes, it's tricky to develop much character depth, but the situation is bracingly well-defined, and a closing caption adds the stark historical reality. Thie would definitely be worth expanding into a feature, and Von Schemm proves here that he has the skills to do it.

Bent (1997)

Bent ( 1997 )

Dugo sam odlagao gledanje ovog filma. Čitao sam o njemu ranije i nisam se htio opterećivati scenama nacističke torture. Dovoljno me terorišu na poslu!
svako poznato gay mjesto tog vremena.

BY ROGER EBERT / November 26, 1997

"Bent" tells a heartrending love story, set against the backdrop of the Holocaust. I could describe the film in solemn pieties, but that would be too easy. The more deeply it descends into horror, the more alarming its agenda becomes, until finally I'd had enough: The material is not worthy of its setting.

The story involves a Berlin homosexual named Max (Clive Owen), who is swept up in the Nazi madness, forced to kill his lover, sent to a prison camp, and there finds true love with another man. Max has lied to qualify for a yellow star (signifying he is Jewish) instead of a pink one (homosexual). By the end he is proud to wear the pink star, but his decision is staged as a crowd-pleaser.

"Bent" is a movie very much about entertaining its audience (I have not seen the stage play by Martin Sherman, who wrote the screenplay). It opens with a gay orgy, hosted by the transvestite Greta (Mick Jagger), where bodies are strewn about in sexual congress. Some of the revelers are either Nazis, or wear Nazi uniforms as a form of erotic enhancement.

Max goes home with a handsome young Nazi, and has sex with him, to the dismay of Max's lover, Rudy (Brian Webber). It is the time of the purge of gay Nazis; storm troopers burst in to slit the Nazi's throat. Max and Rudy escape, hide in the woods, and are captured after a thrilling action scene. The scene exists for its own sake; the drama is suspended, so the audience can thrill to the formula of pursuit.

On a train to prison camp, Max is forced to commit unspeakable acts and betray his friend. The underlying message is, it's every man for himself; the film will refute that. In the camp, Max is assigned to shift rocks from one pile to another. He's joined by Horst (Lothaire Bluteau), who he met on the train. "Friendship lasts about 12 hours in this place," Horst tells him.

But soon, in the midst of dread and a bitter winter, they find erotic desire stirring, and there is a scene where they stand side by side, with no eye contact, and by describing their feelings verbally are able to arrive at simultaneous orgasm. This scene works like the chase scene: It drops out of the drama to stand alone as entertainment--as eroticism. A better film would have found a way to absorb the sexuality into the underlying theme; both scenes are crowd-pleasers, and so is a closing sequence which seems staged more as a noble tableaux than as drama at all.

Max's personal victory we of course applaud, but does the film, with its methods, deserve the sentiment it requests? Sherman's stage version of "Bent" is, I am told, a moving experience. During the film, there was scarcely a moment when I wasn't aware of its gears cleverly turning.

NaPolA (2004), Before the Fall

NaPolA (2004), Before the Fall

* Best Direction, Bavarian Film Awards, 2005
* Best international film, Hamptons International Film Festival, 2004
* Best Actor, Max Riemelt, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, 2004

English:

As Hitler launches the first major military aggressions of World War II, the strongest and smartest German young men enter exclusive schools known as "Napolas" to train as future leaders of the Third Reich. In 1942, a recruiter from one such Napola sets his sights on Friedrich, a talented adolescent boxer, who sees the training and prestige offered by the Napola as his ticket out of an impoverished family unit run by his anti-Nazi father.
In the Napola, Friedrich learns to fight without pity, becoming a formidable killing machine. Propagandistic classes reinforce a hardened worldview of his Aryan superiority.
Meanwhile, Friedrich forms a bond with fellow cadet Albrecht Stein, an aspiring writer and son of the local Nazi governor. Governor Stein dotes on Friedrich, barely masking his contempt for his own son’s sensitivity. But Friedrich admires and empathizes with his friend, even though Albrecht criticizes Friedrich’s brutality in the ring.
As the war escalates, the school's military training also intensifies. Unscrupulous trainers humiliate the more vulnerable cadets in front of their peers and send the others out on dubious war game exercises. In one such nightmarish event, they instruct Friedrich and Albrecht to shoot escaping POW’s who turn out to be unarmed Russian civilians. Tormented with guilt, Albrecht rebels, and Friedrich must choose between his sworn allegiance to the Fuehrer and his best friend’s moral. imperative.
