Lola Bilidikid (1999)
lbdcMurat (Baki Davrak) is a seventeen year old gay Turkish immigrant, who lives with his mother and brother in Berlin. Murat lurks around public toilets and drag bars trying to find some entry point into his adulthood and eventually encounters Lola (Gandi Mukli), a drag performer who turns out to be Murat's estranged brother. Lola is stuck in a relationship with Bili (Erdal Yilidiz) who's so hung up on being macho that he insists Lola have a sex change so they can marry and be man and wife, rather than a gay couple, something which Bili despises. Elsewhere, aging HIV-positive architect Friedrich (Michael Gerber) falls in love with Turkish hustler Iskender (Murat Yilmaz) and battles his controlling mother Ute (Inge Keller).

Despite its soapy, busy plot, Lola + Bilidikid is a tranquilised, ellipitical film that makes for a detached and ultimately unimpressive viewing experience. The film's excess of characters and sickly float of ennui and displacement just doesn't gel into anything interesting. We know that immigrants face racism and taunting all over the world, and the stock-standard sensitive-boy-coming-out plot really should have been retired to stud many moons ago. Ancient Keller, who's acted in German films since the 1940s, is an imperious highlight but even she seems to be wondering what she's supposed to be doing half the time.

The film attempts a commentary on breaking free from restrictive family bonds with Murat and Friedrich like generational bookends to a postwar Europe that has drifted in many different directions. But this film is too scattershot and its script too malnourished to do this interesting idea any kind of justice. Lola and Murat seem to fight for supremacy as the film's main character, but they end up in a disjointed stalemate where only one can appear in any one scene. Behind them, Bili, Friedrich, Iskender et al mash together as an indistinct mopey ensemble. The film's climax is incongruous and excessively pessimisitc.

Another German film about an artificially red haired Lola in distress released the same year was Run, Lola Run, an innovative corker that mopped up awards and audience excitement around the world. Lola + Bilikid could have taken a few more risks and well, been an entirely different film, and it may have avoided ending up the plain, ugly twin sister.
17-year old Murat from Turkey, living in Berlin, Germany, slowly discovers his homosexuality. His older brother Osman, head of the family since the father's death, wants him to finally lose his virginity (in a heterosexual manner) and thus causes Murat to run away. In a bar, Murat meets Lola, who has some things to tell about him. He also meets Bilidikid, Lolas man, who thinks that Murat might have thrown an eye on Lola. But the truth about Lola, Murat and his family is far worse that anyone could have expected.

Wrestling (2007)

Original Title: Bræðrabylta

Director: Grímur Hákonarson
Writer: Grímur Hákonarson
Genre: Short movie
Year: 2009
Country: Iceland

Stars: Helga Braga Jónsdóttir, María Gu?mundsdóttir and Halldór Gylfason

You wouldn't think that a story about gay wrestlers would be interesting or even serious but think again...This short film is full of symbolisms, feelings, ideas, emotions with such a small amount of dialogue. First the landscapes and overall the light play a big role in showing the mood of the characters and how lost they are in their inappropriate love, so trapped into their respective life and relationships; both will suffer a loss that will act as a catalyst and change their destiny. The symbol could look a bit naive :one of the guy digs tunnels and the day he pierced the hole and sees the outside, is the time he decides what he needs to do next....but it worked for me. Compared to the rest of the story, the ending could appear unrealistic but if you develop any compassion for the characters, you will like it.

Svoj prvi zapaženiji uspjeh je doživio filmom La semana del asesino (The Week of the Murderer) 1972. godine koji ukljucuje homoseksualizam.

English:

One of the earliest Spanish directors working within queer cinema is the Basque-born Eloy de la Iglesia.
Outspokenly gay, de la Iglesia has stated that his films are about "the world of which the majority of filmmakers do not care to speak, the marginal world." His films often feature gay, or otherwise marginalized, characters. De la Iglesia has explained that he is a director who "always wants to make the films that are not supposed to be made," on subjects that "everyone else has agreed not to talk about."
Despite censorship constraints and hostile reactions from Catholic leaders to many of his films, de la Iglesia has enjoyed commercial success as a director, especially in Spain.

De la Iglesia began his film career in 1966 with Fantasia . . . 3, a collection of three short films based on children's stories by Hans Christian Andersen, L. Frank Baum, and the Grimm brothers. His first commercial achievement in his native country was El techo de cristal (The Glass Ceiling, 1971); two years later saw de la Iglesia's first international success with the release of La semana del asesino (Week of the Killer/Cannibal Man, 1974), a violent account of a young man who goes on a killing spree. The film also includes a gay character who is presented in an open, non-stereotypical, manner.

The death of Francisco Franco in 1975 brought more latitude and a new openness for artists in Spain. As a result, de la Iglesia created Los placeres ocultos (Hidden Pleasures, 1977), the first gay film to be produced in Spain. The film concerns a closeted homosexual banker attracted to a poor, heterosexual young man. The banker brings the young man into his life, and although the attraction is one way, the youth is accepting of the situation and even brings his girlfriend into the arrangement.
Initially banned by the censors, is the story of a closeted banker attracted to a poor youth who is heterosexual. The banker attempts to create a new model of the family by spending time with the young man and his fiancée. He takes on a traditional paternal function by giving the youth a job in the bank and improving his education, but his true wish is for the two of them to be a couple.

Because of personal, social and economic tensions that arise, it appears that he may fail in both roles. The end of the film, however, has the banker smiling as he answers a doorbell rung by an unseen person, leading spectators to believe that he has at least the possibility of achieving happiness as part of a homosexual couple.

Every second of surfing footage in this film is so mind-blowingly gorgeous, you won’t want to take your eyes off the screen. Which is good, because almost nothing else is going to grab your attention.

The Hoff family has three brothers: Jesse (Lachlan Buchanan) , a 17 year old wanna-be surfer, living in the shadow of former surf champion and half-brother Victor (Reshad Strik), whose life is in ruins due to a knee injury and a drinking problem; and Fergus (Xavier Samuel), who dies his hair purple, wears nail polish and Clash t-shirts, and is in the midst of discovering that he might be homosexual.

Opening with tryouts for a surf competition that would catapult the winner into the International circuit, the film meanders through the various struggles of the three boys and their friends, broken up by those gorgeous surfing shots mentioned earlier (and speaking of gorgeous, it’s worth noting that every young person in this movie is extremely good looking, and often nearly naked as well).

A turning point is reached when the teenagers decide to lie to their parents and take a camping trip on the beach to do what typical teenagers do: smoke pot, drink, have sex – and surf, of course. When Victor winds up at the same beach and finds Jesse practicing in order to be the next champion, egos rise and a fierce competition results in (highly predictable) tragedy.
