Film Critic

Billed as “a holiday movie for all of us,” “Scrooge & Marley” is in fact very niche, being of and for that segment of the gay community that enjoys watered-down camp and syrupy empowerment messages, which are not to be confused with the good kinds of either. This spin on “A Christmas Carol” delivers a heavy-handed morality play that Dickens himself might have found gauche, sugar-coated with weak songs and broad performances. Playing scattered theatrical runs between now and Christmas, the pic figures to do modest but better biz from its home-format release next month.

Raining on his employees’ seasonal cheer (even firing one of them), Ebenezer, aka Ben, Scrooge (David Pevsner) shutters the gay nightclub he ripped off long ago from a former benefactor (the inevitable Bruce Vilanch) and settles in for a grumpy solo Christmas Eve. But he’s visited first by Marley (Tim Kazurinsky), his former partner in ruthless gay-community bilking, now a salvation-seeking denizen of purgatory.

As in the Dickens story, three more ghosts follow: Christmas Past (Ronnie Kroell), who helps Ben revisit his homophobic father and other contributors to his greedy, mean adult personality; Present (Megan Cavanagh), who shows how forgiving the people around him are; and Future (JoJo Baby), who promises Scrooge’s customarily bleak reward. Scrooge redeems himself, natch, though the maudlin final scenes are cringe-inducing.

Of course, it’s impossible to do a “Carol” without sentimentality — Scrooge’s whole journey is about thawing his heart. But “S&M” (get it?) is so crude and literal-minded in its gay reinterpretation that no genuine emotion can get past the script’s compilation of cliches. Execution isn’t much better, with a low budget that might’ve been turned to a more imaginative pic’s advantage, but here is charmlessly obvious, with tacky f/x and stagy interiors; indeed, the material could translate to a proscenium with little alteration.
Shot in Chicago, the pic clumsily uses frequent blackouts to transition between scenes in a mediocre tech/design package.

The Hinterlands ( 2013)

Director: Brandon Ivie
Producer: Annie Cull
Writers: Michelle Elliott, Danny Larsen
Genre: Musical, Web series
Country: USA
Year:2013

Web page: http://hinterlandsthemusical.com/

In the middle of nowhere, growing up gay is the worst.
Hinterlands1Meet Paul. He’s 16. He’s into theoretical physics. He lives in the middle of nowhere. And he’s gay. Being a scrawny, queer science nerd practically makes him a bully magnet. And as the harassment piles up, Paul contemplates taking his own life. In THE HINTERLANDS, a six-part musical miniseries, Paul struggles to keep his head above water as he confronts intolerance, his sexuality and the rocky path of adolescence.

Hinterlands2We wanted to respond to the issue of gay bullying in a way that would help kids like Paul understand that they're incredibly valuable members of our human community and that they are inherently worthy of love and compassion.  We decided to do what we do best - write a musical.  As storytellers and songwriters, we can ask questions, create empathy and make change.  By creating the character of Paul we believe we will be giving young people a person with whom they can relate and empathize.  By watching Paul's journey to discover how to cope with the day-to-day bullying he faces, teens can gain strength and be inspired to overcome their own obstacles. Yes, “it gets better” for gay youth who make it through their difficult childhood and teenage years, but The Hinterlands is our attempt to help all bullied young people find and embrace their own innate worthiness NOW, despite the onslaught of hatred they must survive every day.
Hinterlands3 A guiding factor in the creation of the Hinterlands as a musical web series – rather than a staged production – was our belief that kids need to be able to access a story like this from the safety of their own laptops, iPads and smart phones. And kids in the real hinterlands are the most in need of a project like this, as some communities are highly intolerant of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender kids.

Trick-1999---300Trick (1999)

Director: Jim Fall
Writer: Jason Schafer
Genre: Romance
Country: USA
Language: English
Duration: 89 min
Year: 1999

Stars: Christian Campbell, John Paul Pitoc, Tori Spelling, Brad Beyer,Will Keenan

The misadventures of two young gay men, trying to find a place to be alone, one night in Manhattan.

trick-1-1Gabriel, an office temp by day and aspiring Broadway composer by night, becomes smitten with Mark, a go-go dancer, in a gay bar with whom he makes eye contact. The two meet again in the subway that very night, and go back to Gabriel's place to have sex. They're thwarted in the attempt, however, first by Gabriel's aspiring actress friend Katherine, who is obsessed with her role in an adaptation of Salomé set in a women's prison, and then by Gabriel's roommate Rich, who returns home with his girlfriend Judy, with similar (and conflicting) plans for the apartment.

trick_1999_3-300Gabriel and Rich argue over which of them should get to use the apartment that night, and decide to settle the matter with a coin toss. When Gabriel loses the coin toss and he and Mark have to leave, Gabriel seeks out his friend Perry to request the use of Perry's place. Unfortunately, as Perry escorts Gabriel and Mark there, they run into Perry's ex-boyfriend. Perry and his ex tearfully reconcile and they go back to Perry's, frustrating Gabriel and Mark yet again. The two then decide to hit a gay club for some dancing. There, a malicious drag queen, Miss Coco, corners Gabriel in the restroom. She badmouths Mark to Gabriel, telling him of the time they tricked – which sounds very much like how Gabriel and Mark met – and how Mark left abruptly after climaxing, leaving her with a fake phone number to boot. Crushed by this news, Gabriel decides to take off.

Mark follows Gabriel back to his and Rich's apartment to talk – and also because he's left his house keys there. They go in to look for the keys and try to talk things out while Judy mediates topless. Mark asserts that while he did indeed trick once with Miss Coco, it was actually the latter who tried to take advantage of him by secretly videotaping their encounter without Mark's consent. Gabriel accepts this story, but still doesn't trust Mark, so Mark angrily leaves. Judy then finds Mark's keys, and Gabriel chases after Mark with them down into the New York subway system. Just when it seems that Mark is gone forever, he reappears; he and Gabriel made a connection after all.

Trick1999_clip11-250Having reconciled, they decide to get something to eat but – in yet another turn of events – run into Katherine and some of her theatre friends at a diner, where Katherine proceeds to monopolize the conversation. Gabriel finally blows up at her, and Katherine, humiliated, melts down and leaves in a huff. Gabriel chases after her and apologizes; they smooth things over and Katherine and her friends depart. As the new morning dawns, Mark gives Gabriel his phone number, they kiss, and Mark heads home. Gabriel calls the number on a nearby payphone, and is relieved to learn that it's Mark's actual number. While they never found a spot to trick, Mark and Gabriel instead formed a budding relationship beyond the simple one night stand they'd first been trying for.

Size plays a major role in “20 Centimeters "a brash, vivacious concoction of dark comedy, light drama and musical performance written and directed by Ramón Salazar. For starters, the title refers to the length of its main character’s penis, nearly eight inches. Marieta, né Adolfo, a pre-op transsexual narcoleptic (convincingly played by Mónica Cervera), wants those inches to vanish, and nothing can come between her and the surgery that will make it happen, not even a hunky fruit-stocker who likes her as is.

18885892.jpg-r_640_600-b_1_D6D6D6-f_jpg-q_x-20070907_081119During spells of sudden sleep, which seem to come at the most ill-timed moments, Marieta dreams that she is the star of huge, spicy (and frustratingly hit-or-miss) song-and-dance numbers in a wide variety of musical styles, most prominently Spanish and American pop songs. (The bit inspired by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video is particularly amusing.)
But because so much screen time is spent in fantasyland, the film’s reality-based story lines, which focus on the sometimes bleak, even tragic, elements of Marieta’s everyday life — her conflicted sexuality, prostitution work and complex relationships with her roommate (a dwarf) and a neighbor’s young son — end up serving mainly as springboards for the high-energy set pieces.

Mary Lou ( Tamid oto chalom ) (2009)

Director: Eytan Fox

Writer: Shira Artzi
Year: 2009
Genre: Musical, Drama
Country: Israel
Language: Hebrew

Stars: Efi Bibi, Angel Bonani and Lior Cohen

           >

Prava romansa, a? Najbolja drugarica prepusti momka najboljem drugu. Hm?

Pogledajte:

Boy Culture DVD Artwork.inddHaving recently been impressed with François Chang’s début feature finding source material in a Lady Gaga hit “Bad Romance,” it seemed an excellent time to view Eytan Fox’s four-part mini-series, Mary Lou.

In the same vein as crafting a musical/film out of songs (Mamma Mia!), the music of Svika Pick, the popular Israeli singer-songwriter (who briefly appears as himself) with a knack for pleasant tunes if somewhat saccharine lyrics (“Sometimes dreams come true” feeding the main plot of drag-queen-in-training Meir’s—Ido Rosenberg wears his gowns with the greatest of ease but is badly in need of a vocal coach for his non lip-sync numbers—search for his suddenly departed mom, Mary Lou—Maya Dagan plays the angelic role with faraway style; “All that remains a dull ember,” while Ori—the captivating Yedidya Vital, a.k.a. Miss Sunshine on stage—endures a beating at the surprised hands of a pick-up date whose journey to a very private place fastens on an unexpected bit of anatomy. (Sadly, with not even the pathetic character flaw in any way established, the bruised showgirl calls up her/his attacker and they begin dating.) Later “Some lives aren’t worth living” gets a chilling encore.

meir-and-gaviWithout a doubt, it’s the dance scenes that contain the best moments. Oz Morag’s infectious choreography is engagingly rendered by the ensemble, more than making up for the pedestrian plot points and limited characterizations. Having the considerable talents of The Holy Wigs—Jerusalem’s premie`re drag queen troupe—is another visual plus. Director Eytan Fox and his production team (especially director of photography Yaron Scharf) have captured the darting images with consummate skill and managed to edit down (Ron Omer, a master with every cut and fade) the many hours of takes into a snappy whole that will delight gay and straight crowds alike.

meirOf the remaining leads, Shumel Vilozni as David Levi—abandoned husband, uncomfortable with his son becoming a daughter for pay—bites his stoic tongue so long that his closing revelation seems as false as the manmade cleavage that stokes the female façade nightly. Meir’s best girlfriend Shuli is eagerly brought to adult life by Dana Frider who effortlessly morphs from wounded lover to enthusiastic fag hag. Her sometime boyfriend Gabriel (Alon Levi with camera appeal for any gender) opts to mask his sexuality in the military but is, nonetheless, helplessly drawn to Meir and his fully loaded pistol.

More telling than anything else, the inclusion of Charles Aznavour singing “What Makes a Man a Man” (just after the line “I change my sex before their very eyes” unintentionally reconstructs the last scene in Michel Tremblay’s Hosanna), succinctly demonstrates the power of superior song writing and delivery.

Nonetheless, for those who prefer their impossible dreams done up light and frothy, Mary Lou is highly recommended.

Description:

Kako god bilo, onim romantičarima koji sanjaju o svom najboljem drugu, a ne smiju mu to reći, mjuzikl Where the world mine bi mogao oslikati san.

'Were the World Mine'

Friday, November 21, 2008

The phenomenon of teen musicals - beloved by actual teens - is a little perplexing. There is just nothing ... cool ... about breaking into song and dance routines in daily life. Disney's "High School Musical" juggernaut and the popularity of the stage show and film version of "Hairspray" have brought more attention to the teen-centered Broadway hit "Spring Awakening," which will be made into a film as well.

"Were the World Mine" follows the teen musical formula but renders its material with admirable lushness and intelligence. It was a hit as an indie short film on the film festival circuit before director and writer Tom Gustafson turned it into a full-length musical, so irony and self-referral humor are written into its DNA.

"Were the World Mine" tells the story of out gay teenager Timothy (Tanner Cohen), who is attending a boys' private school. He is hazed repeatedly and ruthlessly by his homophobic classmates, but he survives by escaping into fantasy (here come the musical sequences) - mostly, fantasizing about the extremely cute Jonathon (Nathaniel David Becker). He also has to deal with his struggling mother (Judy McLane) and friends Frankie (Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin) and Max (Ricky Goldman).

Life changes abruptly for Timothy when, after being cast as Puck in the school production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by his slightly batty drama teacher (played by "Twin Peaks" actress Wendy Robie), he finds a secret recipe embedded in Shakespeare's famous farce. Timothy, like Puck, has the ability to make people fall in love with the first person they see. Should he use it?

Well, it wouldn't be much of a movie if he didn't. As the action unfolds, with dazzling color and crisp choreography, the homophobic boys get the lesson of their lives.

The weakest part of the movie, besides some rather drawn-out plot machinations, is the musical aspect. The tunes just aren't catchy enough to linger or clever enough to stand in for dialogue. It's a welcome addition to the cavalcade of teen-focused musicals, but like a midsummer night's dream, can hardly be remembered the next day.

-- Advisory: Boys kiss boys often in this film, but nothing truly shocking.

No to je stvar izbora i afiniteta!
A đe nema đece brak obično propada.

Pita ga on, pa jeste li imali seks? A ti jesi li njemu pušio?

http://www.nycmovieguru.com/jan30th.html#betweenlove&goodbye

After Marcel (Justin Tensen) flies in from France to get married to Sarah (Jane Elliott) in New York City, Marcel goes off to his musician boyfriend, Kyle (Simon Miller) and makes out with him. It turns out that Sarah’s a lesbian while Marcel and Kyle are both gay lovers and the only reason he and Sarah got married was so that he could get a green card. In a rather implausible scene, Kyle and Sarah go to the Department of Immigration to prove that they’re married and both of them struggle to answer certain questions seem uncomfortable during the interrogation, yet they’re somehow able to fool them.

Just when Marcel moves into Kyle’s apartment, April (Rob Harmon), a transsexual prostitute, moves in as well. Will Kyle be able to give equal attention to both Marcel and April or will there be some sort of a conflict involving jealousy? Marcel clearly wants to spend more time with Kyle and thinks that April’s getting in the way, but the way he deals with his problem so aggressively and insultingly seems very immature and selfish to Kyle as well as to the audience. Soon enough, their relationship hangs on thin ice that could break any second. April has problems of her own when her body doesn’t accept her new breast implants, so she has them removed, shaves her head and decides to go back to being a man again. Despite a terrific ensemble cast that adds some much-needed energy to the film, writer/director Casper Andreas’ uneven, occasionally stilted screenplay falls somewhat flat in the romance, drama and comedy departments. On a positive note, Andreas includes a well-chosen soundtrack and smooth, stylish cinematography. The flashbacks showing how Kyle and Marcel had first met at a club, however, don’t help to give the audience a sense of why they’re truly in love with one another. What makes their connection beyond a physical attraction?

Why do Marcel and Kyle behave so naively, especially when Kyle decides o distance himself away from him? It’s as though they’re both still stuck in their teenage years and haven’t learned how to listen attentively to one another, to compromise or to articulate their feelings respectfully for that matter. Their rudeness and jejuneness get on your nerves more often than not. Moreover, both of their actions in the third act feel out-of-character and make them quite unlikable. The only remaining character who remains likable and charismatic throughout happens to Sarah, but there aren’t enough scenes with her. Had she been the protagonist instead and with a more organic and witty screenplay, Between Love & Goodbye would have been much more engaging rather than often dull, contrived and unmoving. It also doesn’t help that its abrupt ending leaves you with a bad aftertaste.

Eurovision Dance Contest 2008

The second Eurovision Dance Contest (EDC), the newest addition to the Eurovision Family of programmes, took place in the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) in Glasgow, on Saturday, 6 September 2008.

The two-hour and fifteen minutes European co-production was organised by the EBU, hosted by its British member, the BBC, and produced by two UK production companies, Splash Media and Sunset+Vine, with assistance from the International Dance Sport Federation (IDSF).

The show was broadcast live on television across Europe and beyond the Eurovision Network on primetime and was viewed by millions in over 25 countries. In the 5,000m˛ SECC arena hall, approximately 2,200 spectators enthusiastically witnessed the event live and cheered for the favourites.

Fifty three years after the launch of the Eurovision Song Contest and following the creation of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, this new show brings together the best of both worlds: the glitz and glamour of ballroom dancing and the Song Contest's live and unpredictable drama, with a scoreboard, hosts speaking foreign languages, and of course the "douze points".

14 qualified mixed dancing couples, each comprising one professional dancer and another dancer engaged in a profession other than dance, represented their countries in the 2008 Eurovision Dance Contest with a freestyle choreography inspired by the country or tradition they represented. In addition to being judged by a jury panel of IDSF experts in the arena, the European audience at home cast their vote by televoting and text voting to determine this year's winner of the Grand Prix Dancing title.

As in the first edition, the show was hosted by one of the BBC's most popular talents, Graham Norton, alongside Claudia Winkleman, the host of "Strictly Come Dancing's" companion programme, "It Takes Two".

Description:

Bright and sassy, "The Full Monty" is a treat. Backed by inventive marketing, this small but muscular British pic about a bunch of gawky unemployeds launching a striptease act could turn into a winner for Fox Searchlight in the right locations, and looks set for solid business in other territories. Apart from Robert Carlyle (Begbie in "Trainspotting"), it's a no-name cast, so word of mouth and the off-the-wall concept will play a large role in selling the movie.

The sardonic tone is set from the start as an upbeat promo docu introduces "Sheffield --- City on the Move" underneath the main titles. Twenty-five years later we see the South Yorkshire industrial town's contempo reality, with modernization having led to steel mills being closed and workers laid off.. Among them is easygoing divorcee Gaz (Carlyle) and his bumbling, overweight pal Dave (Mark Addy).

Gaz spends his days larking around town with his young son (William Snape) and Dave, occasionally popping into the local job center that's also frequented by their snooty ex-foreman, Gerald (Tom Wilkinson). All three men's personal lives are a mess: Gaz gets a hard time from his ex-wife (Emily Woof), Dave is underperforming in the sack with his spouse (Lesley Sharp), and Gerald is still fooling his other half (Deirdre Costello) that he goes to the office every day.

Inspired by a visit of the Chippendale dancers to a local club, and in need of some quick cash to pay off his alimony arrears, Gaz has the idea of the three of them doing a strip act to raise some coin. With amateur ballroom dancer Gerald taking charge of the choreography, they're joined by Guy (Hugo Speer), whose largest qualification is between his legs, suicidal Lomper (Steve Huison) and Horse (Paul Barber), a middle-aged dancer with a hopelessly out-of-date repertoire.

After being arrested by the cops during one of their rehearsals, word quickly spreads through town about their forthcoming stunt, and tickets are snapped up by curious women. Though increasingly nervous, the men realize they can't back out but agree to do it for one night only. In the meantime, however, Gaz has unfortunately announced, as a publicity move, that they'll do "the full monty" (a complete strip).

The particular magic of the film is the way in which it draws credible characters in a recognizable setting but elevates them and their story into crowd-pleasing fare without losing sight of the big social picture. Helmer Peter Cattaneo, who had a mini-hit at the 1995 Edinburgh fest with his BBC telepic "Loved Up," brings many of the same qualities to "Monty" --- a nonjudgmental approach to flawed types and a feel for entertainment values and community spirit.

Just as "Loved Up" was very London in its characters, so "Monty" works best in the northern setting, with its rough humor, forthright womenfolk and feet-on-the-ground attitudes. Yorkshire-born scripter Simon Beaufoy's dialogue catches the feel of the place without going ear-bendingly local. Only in occasional spots may North American auds have problems with the accents.

Filmmakers are served by a top-notch cast seemingly chosen for veracity rather than marquee values. Yet again, the chameleon Carlyle surprises in a role far removed from Begbie in "Trainspotting," the MS victim in "Go Now" or the Glasgow bus driver in "Carla's Song." Lean and louche, but with an unbreakable spirit, Carlyle's Gaz is the motor of the movie, and the last few minutes of the film, as he leads the lads in a full monty in front of cheering women, are the stuff of standing ovations.

The other male leads score in different ways, with Addy's porcine Dave playing straight man to the flashier Carlyle, and Wilkinson, as middle-class interloper Gerald, contributing at least one touching scene when he drops his snooty bearing and fesses up to his weaknesses.

Though never really part of the main action, the women are all well-drawn, tough Yorkshire types, led by Sharp as Dave's patient wife. Also good is kid thesp Snape as Gaz's unfazable son: He and Carlyle play especially well together.

Technically, the movie has a modest but pro look, with Anne Dudley's music giving it plenty of bounce and the cutting trim at only an hour and a half. It's one of those rare pics, however, where the bigness and generosity of the characters make the smallness of the budget unimportant.

Ja uzdišem i vičem to jače manijače , on se zapjenio i pomalo zanio.

Description:
Recall the “Kantaben” episode in “Kal ho na ho”. Now concoct a whole film around it, and Voila ! You have “Dostana”, a film about two men pretending to be gay. And because it would be mightily inconvenient to situate such a story in good old, traditional India (some “patriotic” group or other “guardians” of our culture might take offence), the story is set in Miami. Also throw in a nicely proportioned, peppy lass and you now have a full-on Masala film !

The two men in question are Kunal (Abraham) and Sameer - or Sam (Bachchan). One’s a photographer and the other’s a nurse, and they both are inevitable skirt-chasers. Having their fill of women (women seem to fall all over themselves for these two) but lacking housing, both end up trying to rent rooms in an apartment belonging to single, Sindhi lady Neha Melwani (Chopra). However, Ms Melwani and her aunt (Sushmita Mukherjee) will have no men in the apartment, and Kunal and Sam then pretend to be a gay couple to gain admittance.

The three roomies then proceed to become best buddies, with the two men falling in love with Neha. She of course treats them as friends only, and falls in love with her boss Abhimanyu Singh (Deol). So there’s one girl, and three men who want her - and it takes the entire second half for one to win.

“Dostana” opens with a song, featuring some of the fittest bodies in Bollywood. There’s John Abraham, resplendent in bright yellow swim shorts. There’s Shilpa Shetty, she of the well-toned body and long, long legs. Abhishek is left (a little too) hirsute and clothed, which is how we like him. And there’s a bevy of bikini-clad beach beauties, vying for attention. Bright colors, blue skies, and the sea complete the slick, well-glamorized shot.

This opening sort of sets the tone of the film; it does not lack item numbers, or skimpy clothing, and it‘s about happening, hot young things sorting out their life and loves in a happening, hot, young world. Gay desis abound, and are amazingly, out of the closet. Desi folk are chic, work in non-engineering careers, and dress to kill. If you have it, you must flaunt it. Priyanka romps around in short shorts and bikini tops, and looks good doing it. And John Abraham, in one scene, wears only the bare essentials.

The men are into wine and women, but they also, this being Bollywood and all, possess hearts of gold. While I must give the film credit for even raising the notion of gay partnership as a possible relationship, for the desi public, I am also a little perturbed that when it suits it, the characters in this film seem to ooze what can only be described as homophobia. And while desi male sexuality is all out on display - Kunal and Sam sleep around and indulge in one night-stands (and they can still apparently morph into paragons of morality when confronted with true love), the desi woman, Neha, still remains prim, proper, and pristine (and asexual ?), unwilling to even share an apartment with a man.

This film is directed by Mansukhani, but has Karan Johar’s stamp all over it. It is thoroughly glam-med up, vibrant and slick, with well-choreographed numbers. Adequate direction, a shallow but entertaining script, and reasonable acting make this a mucho-masala film. The first half of the film is a breeze; funny, with lots of little well-timed gags. In the second half the film drags a bit, because of predictability - I knew exactly how it was going to end, and it isn’t that hard to guess. No real twists and turns here, except for the completely unexpected man-on-man kiss !

John and Abhishek, display real chemistry, playing off well against each other , and Priyanka does adequately. Kirron Kher hams it up as Sam’s typically Punjabi Mom, who has a hard time accepting her son’s alternative sexuality. Boman Irani is Neha’s out-and-about gay boss, and Bobby Deol, as the straight man in her life, is the third contender for Neha’s love.

“Dostana” is a decent watch. Yes, you do have to accept that in desi filmdom, there is only one kind of sexuality that is accepted, and it’s straight and male. The others (female, gay, lesbian etc. ) might exist but are never quite willingly acknowledged in the desi spectrum, although we might nod our heads and mumble soothing words, when asked, because we are oh-so-broadminded and believe in true love (wherever it might be found).
