Rasmus arrives in Copenhagen determined to find his mother whom he has never met. Having just arrived at Copenhagen Central Station Rasmus is approached by Nicklas who wants Rasmus to help him by keeping a stolen IPod. Rasmus does so and to return the favor Nicklas offers to give Rasmus a ride to his mother’s house. Reluctantly Rasmus accepts the offer and that kicks off a day that holds lots of fun and reveals hidden feelings.
Two young actors have that faces that are were very expressive of their personal sense of unsureness and disconnectedness with the world, yet wishing to demonstrate a bravado and control of their personal circumstances. The opening shots of the film showed the yearning and glistening hope in the eyes of the boy, Rasmus, as he looked out the train window, contrasted with the harsh face of a middle-aged stranger sitting next to him on the train whose face showed the angry lines of a firm acceptance of his place in hard world where dreams won’t come true. One can see in that that youth is not apt to find much of value from people such as those, who are more apt to destroy their spirit than they are to ignite it.
In the train station, the other boy, Niklas, almost by a kind of bodily magnetism instantly connects with Rasmus as someone he can trust to help him by holding a stolen item while he escapes from men who are pursuing him. A while later, Niklas, having escaped from the pursuing men, meets up with Rasmus and while it seems that Rasmus has a vague destination he is heading for that he doesn’t feel like revealing to Niklas, Niklas convinces him that they need to go there together with Rasmus riding in the cart of Rasmus’s bicycle cart. And that really was the true journey, the two of them toward, or with, each other, they who share certain personal circumstances and need.
This action of them traveling together seemed to put them together in their own isolated bubble. Much of the movie was simply their traveling together throughout the city of Copenhagen from one destination to another (which I appreciated seeing, as while I have passed through Copenhagen, I haven’t seen very much of it), but the beauty of the city, the simple shared exuberance of the boys as they felt the wind in their hair and a feeling of their own motive power, and the various expressions on their faces, sometimes wide open, sometimes cautiously masked, tell the true story without a need for words. And what words there were, were pointed and expressive, and throughout those conversations the boys were continually reaching out in yearning for connection, and then drawing back into unsureness, wavering on that balance beam between “yes I need” and “no I don’t”.
The title of the movie, “The Boy Who Couldn’t Swim”, made me think of a wise Jewish saying that I learned about in a psychology book, “A father’s job is to teach his children how to swim.” While at first that seems trivial, you come to realize that “swimming” is metaphorical of leaving the safety of home and venturing out bit by bit into an alien and dangerous world (or an uncaring and exploitative one). The father is not to hang onto his children, but to help them grow up into a secure adulthood. So what of those children who have not been “taught how to swim?” How do they maneuver out in this world without having had a secure center to start out from? Perhaps they can have another chance, by finding helpers along the way, if only they can recognize them and take the risk of connecting with them when they find them.

Uzeo čovjek lupu i gleda me dolje.

In The Itch, Robin (Aaron Harris) and Orlando (Brandon Collins) have a great first date, but things get weird the next day when Robin gets an itch he can’t stop scratching and he blames Orlando. Robin talks it over with his flatmate Suzie (Vanessa Hardy), also fresh from a hot hook-up, but eventually Robin confronts Orlando as the one he believes gave him scabies. Cute, but not as infectious as its subject. The writing is rather clumsy, especially in the too-good-to-be-true character of Orlando, who seems to be filling up his resumé for an application for sainthood.

While the guys rave about Nathan’s new beau Jake (Curtis Wayne Brown), Nathan (Acord) can’t stop wondering how Damian is spending the holiday.  Muscles (Jeffrey Patrick Olson) complains that dating Lucas is making him fat. Ross’ (David Pevsner) holiday is ruined when a drunken Neal (Parnell Damone Marcano) crashes.  And then Brad (Curt Bonnem) drops a bombshell:  he’s becoming a gigolo!

Did Acord enjoy his first stint in the director’s chair?

“I was a bit nervous at first,” says Acord.  “But I must confess that it was so easy! I’d forget I was the director. Folks would be waiting for me to call ‘cut’!  But that’s because our actors know their characters so well. Each of our directors has told me, at one point or another, that these actors direct themselves. And it’s true.  Plus, we have a wonderful crew that I trust one-hundred percent. There were some shots where I didn’t even look in the viewfinder!”

The series returns next Wednesday with its fourth new episode, “To Have & Have Not,” directed by Steven Curtis.

Kratki film "Love Is All You Need?"

"Love is All You Need?" tells the story of Ashley, a young teen who is raised by the 'picture perfect all-American family' in the suburbs of California - with two moms, two grandpas, two uncles, and a little brother. But Ashley has a problem - she has a crush on a boy at school, which is against everything this world has ever taught her.

Ashley lives In a world where the terms "gay" and "straight" are switched, this young girl must face the fact that she is straight in a gay world. This undeniable attraction to the opposite sex causes her to be the constant target of verbal and physical abuse until she is driven to a tragic end.

Without a Cause and Exsodus" (1955).

James Franco's Sal chronicles the final day in the life of actor Sal Mineo (Val Lauren), 1950s teen idol and an Academy Award (R) nominee for his roles in Rebel Without a Cause and Exodus. Almost two decades later, Mineo is no longer the marquee sensation he had once been - but he has become open about his homosexuality and is finding his way to becoming the actor and director he has always wanted to be. Featuring a magnetic performance by Lauren, Franco's intimate portrait finds the human details in a larger-than-life Hollywood story.

Ruben gives in to Paco's invitation and follows him among the rocks on the beach. There they make love. But Ruben has a woman, Julia, who intuitively knows he is unfaithful. Still, Ruben cannot stop going back to the rocks to wait for Paco, even though he is not brave enough to approach him. His desire is irresistible, just as irresistible as the desire to be with Julia and become a father. Is there a solution?

Trunks (short film) from David Hewitt on Vimeo.
Steve knows he’s straight, but under the water at his local swimming pool he feels gay. Will he tell his ex-girlfriend the whole truth?
One of the themes in the film explores the difference of truth between what Steve says and what Steve actually does. This layer is amplified when Steve is talking to his ex-girlfriend about the amazing incident that changed in him. She is the one person he doesn’t want to tell, but at the same time she is the only person he can tell. I hope the chosen story form of dividing the visuals and audio helps to illustrate the various layers in Steve and Ruth’s story. The aim was to give the audience a more complex understanding of what Steve is actually feeling inside and what this change in his identity means to him.

Ja želim tvoju ljubav, želim tvoju osvetu, ti i ja možemo napisati lošu romansu.

Ujutro sam ranije ustao i pošao doma.
Pomislih, jesam li joj sinoć ukrao onaj najbolji seks kada ste još ljuti poslije svađe i užasno napaljeni?:)

Basing a film on a song (in this case, Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”) is nothing new. Well-known songs can give a production recognition value even before the first frame is seen. Also like famous compositions, various covers will pop up everywhere, trying to recreate the magic of the original.

First-time filmmaker François Chang has taken the notion of “I want your love and I want your revenge / I want your love I don’t wanna be your friend” and crafted a narrative that zeroes in on seven lonely individuals who have the potential for living happily ever after thanks largely to love at first sight.

French (language and culture) features prominently. With homage to Eric Rohmer’s Six Contes Moraux, the unmistakable stylings of Edith Piaf and employing the Beijing Alliance Française as a location (not very far from Destination—the Chinese capital’s trendiest gay bar plays a brief, if pivotal part in the relationship buffet), the stage is set for a heady mix of Asian and European culture and mores. The French singers are beautifully contrasted with Chinese opera where the timbre, tone and texture are worlds apart, but their messages are similar (“But why have I not met the one I am looking for?”).

There’s even an air of pointillism (the early-scene sun umbrella immediately evokes a resonance with Georges Seurat’s Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte) and a frequently minimalist, at times saccharine string-rich score that moves along easily with the principals as their tales are intriguingly juxtaposed one upon the others.

Xiaoya (newcomer Nranus Chen already shows an impressive range of emotion), a single mother with a pictured yet never seen son, Yu, is the model of decorum even as she tries to make sense of her life after a failed relationship. Living abroad most of the time, her best friend’s cousin Cong (Chang’s camera has as much success capturing Jason Lau’s sultry good looks—somewhat akin to Joe Odagiri, cross-reference below—as viewers will savour them) is smitten with Xiaoya and begins winning his way into her heart and otherwise empty bed with a daily bouquet of fresh flowers that soon works its way to loving red.

Jasmine (Chan Chan) is late for her very first French class only to suddenly, unquenchably light the fire in new classmate François (Chang doing commendable double duty playing the unrelenting suitor—saying “désolé” with hundreds of Post-it® Notes having missed his hopeful’s own turn as a chanteuse). Their instructor, Marie Robin, launches a discussion about the meaning of love (war, colour, eyes?), and readily establishes the parameters for the dramas that are about to unfold. Language classmate Loulou (Macha Hsiao) takes Jasmine under her wing and is welcomed most affectionately …).

Bass (a promising début for Will Bay) has been waiting two years to reconnect with his instant flame, Cheng (done up with an engaging sense of passion—even as he constantly strays—by Hayden Leung). Once together again, it’s just a matter of hours before living arrangements are altered (yet planning a revenge sleepover ought to have alerted Bass that his longtime lust would only be satiated at a price).

At its best—especially in the first half—the film has a marvellous sense of flow, romance and possibility: something special is on the screen. Unfortunately, Chang’s storyline has to rely on tired turning points (Bass intercepts a cellphone call that puts him on a Somerset Maugham—Of Human Bondage—path of self-inflicted misery that just doesn’t wash in “If I don’t have my phone with me, I am not a whole person” culture of 2011).

When the sex does come (extra hot, lovingly demure or unwanted depending on circumstance) editor Chang scores a physical and emotional knockout without ever losing the overarching aura of tasteful and honest physical expressions of passion.

As is often the case with so many strands weaving their way into a cohesive whole, the final measures and coda can’t quite find the magic with the tantalizing notion that everyone’s been duped (on both sides of the footlights). Once Chang masters the adieu, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with in cinéma profond. JWR

Frozen Roads (2011)

Frozen Roads (2011)

Director: Mark Pariselli
Writer: Mark Pariselli
Genre: Short movie
Country: Canada
Year: 2011
Duration: 17 min

Starring: Kevin DeCarli, Kyle Mac, Carlyn Burchell

Canada has a long and rich history of quality indie film, and so Frozen Roads should have had a lot going for it. Unfortunately – despite the promise – the end result was rather disappointing.

The main issue with the film was the quality of acting on display. The lead characters appeared awkward and wooden – which under other circumstances might have been beneficial in order to convey the respective awkwardness of dealing with gay inclinations as a teenager. Unfortunately – this being a short – we weren’t afforded enough depth of character to make that judgement.

Focusing on the brother and sister leads, Christian (Kyle Mac) and Lyla (Carlyn Burchell), we learn that they are both share feelings for the same boy, Balthazar (Kevin DeCarli) – and the story that follows covers Christian’s stumbling attempts to convey his affections for his friend – who in turn reacts badly and the film culminates in an intense, yet perfunctory sex scene in the front of a truck as Balthazar struggles to come to terms with his emotions. The film is also split in the middle by a home-movie-style clip of the three as toddlers, enjoying a summer vacation – informing the audience that the three have been life-long friends. It appears abruptly and not only disrupts the flow of the film, but also confuses the audience as to its purpose in relation to the remainder of the story.

Abrupt Decision (2011)

Director: Paul Bright
Writer: Paul Bright
Genre: Drama
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Duration: 95 min

Puppy Love

31 January 2012 | by TBROUGH (United States) – IMDB

Denis is having a rotten week. He just lost his job of 11 years. His relationship is gone stale, and rocky. His Mother, a sweet and overbearing woman, is seriously ill. With all the turmoil going on around him, what does Mom suggest? "Get a dog." But when Dennis goes to the pound and can't decide which dog he wants, the one he finally chooses is gone when he goes back. When he finds out why, Dennis decides exactly what his modern mid-life crisis needs.

He makes his "Abrupt Decision" (the fifth feature from filmmaker Paul Bright) when he realizes that his creative collapse mirrors that of the dogs' dangerous lives. With some inspiration from his Mom (Cynthia Schiebel) and the reluctant support of his partner, Milosz (David LaDuca), Denis (Steve Callahan) decides that saving the lives of animals and educating people on their care is his way into a meaningful second act. You know how the saying goes, if you don't want to be upstaged in a movie, stay away from children and dogs? Despite the superb job by Steve and David, the pups are "Abrupt Decision's" scene stealers. But beware. Even with the cute pooches running amuck, this is a very emotionally striking movie.

In the new economy, where men like Denis can find their lives upended and discover that your expertise vaporized after 50, there are many among us who will relate to the impact of "Abrupt Decision's" story. As Denis struggles to find the right decisions in matters of utmost importance, you may put down the doggy treats and reach for the hankies. I'll certainly say that the film is a must-see for pet-lovers, but it also carries an intimate, personal life story.

Something deeply dark and disturbing yet visually enticing awaits viewers for this French drama about a 30-something hustler whose neurosis about aging is, we assume,  turning him to a motiveless murderous monster.   After finding a younger man (Dimitri Durdaine) lying dazed, damaged and suffering from memory loss in the cruising grounds of Bois de Boulogne, Paris,  Vassili (Stephane Rideau) shrouds his new muse, becoming a hybrid of pimp/lover figure to his new squeeze.  After a client, who Vassili believes he had murdered, is discovered living in Paris, the two lovers and now accomplices are forced to go on the run.

Our Paradise is a enigmatically beautiful piece of cinematography with much thought given to ensuring that the characters are either corpulently grotesque or fallen angelic beauties, not in equal measure however.  Angelo is the fallen angelic beauty - both inside and out.  Vassili’s world is full of these gross, bloated and aged individuals who, one imagines used to be paying trade, now, with fresh blood, and Vassili’s burgeoning pot belly hindering his prospects; the fallen angelic beauty reignites business.   One odd scene, Angelo is examined by a doctor, ostensibly to see whether the boy was raped shoves a camera into the boy’s anus and describes his findings ‘smooth as silk.’   This is  however, as far as character probing goes.  Un-complex and a little two dimensional in some respects the characters are more animalistic in their pursuits.  Durdaine is almost entirely detached from his character, which adds to the rather chilling but lonely portrayal of Angelo.

Durdaine plays an almost perfect twink to Rideau’s inflated frame and the audience is given many opportunities to revel in his nakedness, which of course is wonderful and does distract from some the many questions that the film’s lack of motive throws up.

One of the key issues explored is the often mismatched relationships between younger gay men and their respective elder partners. The narrative doesn’t judge, but merely outlines the possible issues faced by such relationships, most notably replaceability for a younger, newer, fresher model and the power struggle between the monied and the beneficiary.

The supporting cast are superb, their performances loiter in the mind as an uneasy feeling engulfs you.  Sterling performances from supporting cast Béatrice Dalle and a young Mathis Morisset who shows acting promise far beyond his years.

The brilliantly translated subtitles really draw you into the action,  distracting the audience from analyzing our anti heros’ intentions.   Why the film is called Our Paradise remains, annoyingly elusive, as paradise is unobtainable for Vassili and Angelo.   The ending makes the film feel a little pointless and if your looking for a bow to wrap up the little details you certainly won’t find it in this film.

Salo (original title)

Director: Miko Jacinto
Writer: Miko Jacinto
Genre: Drama
Country: Philippines
Year: 2011
Duration: 95 min

Stars: Paolo Rivero, Kristoffer King and Anita Linda

Miko Jacinto’s “Salo” (Share) is a surprising work. Unlike most pink films, Jacinto engages and dives into his narrative - frame after frame - with hardly a spoken word. In fact, most of the spoken lines are left hanging, i.e. there’s hardly an exchange of words. This eventually creates semblance of mood and nuances. “Salo” also benefits from Romy Suzara’s beautifully composed scenes, giving the impression that this isn’t your hurried, shoddy, one-take production.
But there is a problem where narrative details are concerned. Perla Bautista’s character, for example, bewilders. She’s the coquettish “tita” who “barks” loudly, spewing lines like: “Bumangon ka na. Masaya ang mundo. Naalala mo pa ba, dati sabay tayong nanlalalaki?” You aren’t sure this was meant to be spoken by an elderly matron. In another scene (where she gazes at the driver washing the car), she said: “Type ko siya. Matrona ba, magaling ding maghugas.” When told that Levi’s spoken for, she replied: “Kahit gawin mo pa akong kerida, ok lang!” And as if to seal the real identity – or sexual preference – of the character: “Nakadami ka na ba?” Though I understand that her character was meant to stir vitality to an otherwise dour story, her character is a tad too uncouth to be believable. You only have to see how matronly she dresses to feel this incongruence to her peculiar manner of speaking.

Slijedi upoznavanje u četiri oka i priča. Podigne glavi kaže : Ošamari me. Ja u čudu, kako da šamaram tolikog čovjeka. On opet ponovi da ga ošamarim. Blago ga pljesnem po licu, a on kaže jače. Kada sam shvatio šta želi toliko sam pobjesnio da sam ga zaista išamarao i izmlatio ga ko pseto.
Nisam uživao u tome, posebno ne u nekom seksualnom smislu. Naprosto izduvao sam se.
Zato nikad ne reci - NIKAD!

Bound And Thrashed is a story which echoes the idea that its not until we are put in a situation that may seen unnatural to us, that we can truly uncover what we desire and what we are capable of. Nathan (Andrew Hood) is depressed and unable to move on from a former lover, his concerned friend Tess (London Gabraelle) persuades him into going on a blind date with Geoffrey (John Cunningham), an older man who has an unusual appetite. Nathans encounter with Geoffrey ultimately assists him in moving on from the past and leads him to self discovery and sexual fulfillment.

Dance film celebrating the choreographer's work, featuring extracts from many of his ballet adaptations such as The Car Man, in which Bizet's Carmen is reset in an American garage, and his award-winning version of Swan Lake. Directed by his long-standing collaborator Ross MacGibbon, the piece celebrates Bourne's power to imaginatively transform classical works, taking dance and dancers off the stage into the studio, bringing together projections, animation and state-of-the-art shooting to produce a distinctive new way of presenting dance on screen.
