Life consists of many segments, each of which in turn accounts for a piece of other pictures. They are optimistic pictures with light of hope, of expected solution and final satisfaction. However, they are also darker images when one goes astray in the situations that are beyond imaginations and belief. The most important point lies in: every picture contains in itself a certain meaning. Good or bad frames do not affect the meaningful contents when one knows where and how to look. Beauty is in the eye of the viewer, and the beauty of this film fills the audiences with hope and prejudice, with trust and betrayal, with short-term happiness and long-lasting endurance in bitterly and the rapidly changing life cycle.

Rudy is a man who performs nightly at a gay bar. He comes across his neighbor, a lady with sign of drug abuse. She has a son named Marco. "Marco was a sweet kid and smart and funny. He had a smile that could light up the room. He loved junk food. Chocolate doughnuts were his drug of choice". He is just innocent and childlike beautiful like others. Unluckily and ultimately sad, he has a Down syndrome. When his mother left him unexpectedly, the life of Rudy and Marco intervenes with each other.

Paul is an excellent lawyer. He has divorced his wife because he realized that something is different. He understands what he really wants, and the moment he meets Rudy proves the immortally legendary tale "Love at the first sight". Together they go on a journey of protecting and fighting for Marco as well as for themselves so that Marco will have a safe and good environment for upbringing. Together they surpassed things and succeeded, to a certain extent.

On that journey, audiences witness many segments of life in which there are supports, there are oppositions. What does not kill us makes us stronger. What always stands by them make them strongest, and that is their love, their will, and their hope. Sometimes, it is false hope and is proven by the evily opposite sides, but the film does give us a far more valuable message: Mistake is born every day. We hardly notice it until time tells us. That moment is when we are struck by the consequences of our own neglect.

Being gay is difficult enough. Being a child with a disease is not at all easy. If, for one moment, we rethink of what we have all thought, is the problem created by the way we define things? The film marvelous demystified it. Gay or straight, handicapped or normal kid, they are all humans. Between humans, there are indestructibly equal rights, which are seemingly forgotten and deliberately neglected by a considerable number of people. Imagine you are gay, or your child has the Down syndrome, you will not simply suicide or throw your child away, will you? If you really might, what is the reason? And no matter what the reason is, life is not born to be killed like that because the meaning of life is limitless beyond human recognition and knowledge. If we have the opportunities to live a normal life, we should help others because if everyone thinks in such way, there will be time when we receive help from others.
Unfortunately, as stated above, "Mistake is born every day. We hardly notice it until time tells us. That moment is when we are struck by the consequences of our own neglect."

Xenia (2014)

Xenia (2014)

Director: Panos H. Koutras
Writer: Panagiotis Evangelidis, Panos H. Koutras
Genre: Drama
Country: France
Language: Greek, Albanian
Duration: 134 min
Year: 2014

Stars: Kostas Nikouli, Nikos Gelia, Yannis Stankoglou

The film is a journey of two brothers, Danny (16 years old) and Odysseus (18 years old), who want to find their father. On their journey, the audiences will find the beauty of crystal clear love between brothers who just have a common goal of protecting each other, the always-seemed-to-appear-at-the-end love of human when contexts just make them stick together, and the undeniable power of time which reveals any truth as always implied in the saying: "what you sow you shall reap". However, the film does not push into that extreme but gives the audience a relaxed with smiling faces in some moments, not because it is pure humour, but because the pure truthful contents makes them smile satisfactorily.

Danny is a gay and kind of a naughty boy. But he is not naughty in a criminal and spoiled way. He is just childish and want to follow his dream, the dream of seeing his father who abandoned him and his brother long time ago. When his mother died, Danny is more motivated to find Odysseus and pushes him to seek the truth he has always wanted to. Doubtless, their journey is like an adventurous trip when they have little money and hardly any one to count on. Even if they do, things are just not easy for them because the nature of Danny is free and curious when Odysseus has his own dreams and determined. However, the love of Odysseus is a big love of brotherhood, and that makes Danny mature and this character evolves his action in a miraculous way.

In the end, Danny and Odysseus indeed finds their father. However, at that time, what is important? Or more exactly, what will be more imporant when their only purpose has been obtained? In an ironic but marvellous way, finding their father turns out to be a phrase in which audiences see as a theme for the developing pure love between brothers. Their father, as Odysseus said: "Maybe", is a reason, a motivation through which the boys have to take risks to see what their life is going to be…

At first, I think it is a gay love between brothers. I am wrong, and I am very happy for that wrongness because what I find is something huger, something the nature has defined and smartly selected. That is, there are many kinds of love, but its only nature, its unique root, comes from sacrifice, and time is an immortal and trustworthy witness who observes, gives all and may kill all.

It has been a long time since I watched such an intense film like this. Actually, to me, it is the most thrilling gay film until now I have ever watched.
From the beginning of the film, viewers will witness a man named Tom who came to the funeral of someone. Bit by bit we understand that was the funeral of a man named Guillaume who Tom had a vauge relationship with. Things are more weird when one night Tom was threatened by Guillaume's brother, Francis, and viewers became more and more irritated and curious to find out what roles of Francis and Tom are exactly and why Guillaume and Francis' mother seems to be such an incomprehensible woman.

Watching the film, viewers will be thrilled by the paradox and obstacle of one life in his own thought. Life is full of lies. People often define them as white lies to make things less serious and repairable, but do they know they are just 'darker', more dangerous to others and even themselves when they cannot escape from their tragedy of having to keep something that they think they should. The film is an objective reflection of what humans may seem to be and what they really are. However, the film also sheds light on the long-lasting truth that there is no pure evil and complete kindness. The question lies in how much evilness one may turn to and in what aspects may one find the goodness in others.

In the end, when acceptance no longer exists and even tolerance does not remain any more, people have to take steps, but those steps, again in an ironical way, may or may not lead to what they forecast.

In a thousand times they ask what they should do. In a million times they think and answer that they do not know. In the film, Tom does not ask but he acts. He does think but his action reveals to us that there is always a paradox of emotions, feelings and people often use force to suppress their loneliness, just to make things harder and more painful.

Throughout the film, every character is so real, so truthful, so artistic, not in the words they say but in the eyes the audiences may observe. Their actions are the directs results of a very long battle of their mind and their heart, of what they should do and can do, of what choices they think they have in such a sarcastic situation. The film builds an objective reflection of truth and lies, of happiness and sorrow, of violence and tenderness, both in a physcial and emotional way.
In my own opinion, those who have experieced similar contexts will find their own thoughts in the characters', and those who want to love and treasure the love towards human and life, they should watch this film, just to understand the paradox of human life, both in their actions and thinking.
