Unique and well-crafted

15 May 2011 | by scootmandutoo (Long Island, New York) – IMDB

I must say that I have seen very few movies that have been paced this slowly, but in this case, it is a testament to the artistry of the director.
In a setting where the pace of life appears to be glacial and change can be a painstakingly slow process, the deliberately slow pacing of some of the scenes was just another way for this film to effectively evoke a mood. There were certain scenes where the only change for an entire minute would be a light going on, or off. Some scenes would linger with a camera a full 10 or 15 seconds after the action or dialogue had ended...just to capture a subtle mood change, or to amplify what was already there.
This is a fascinating piece of work about real people, not the porn star fantasies that populate many other glbt works. This is not to say that the 2 leads are not attractive, as another poster suggested. We all get attracted to different types and these 2 certainly found an attraction to each other.
While I thought that this movie was excellent, I would liked to have seen the romance develop in a more balanced, and less abrupt, fashion. Considering the overall way that Jose gets treated in this film, there could at least have been one truly tender moment to pave the way for how this movie eventually resolved itself.
If the movie has one flaw it was the way the 3 chapters are used to foreshadow what is to come. Once the 3rd chapter title came up there were no surprises and we knew exactly how it was going to end. While the ending made sense, and was satisfying, why the need to foreshadow it?
All in all, a very different type of glbt film that is well worth your time.

Erik is used to living the city life where he can express his sexuality openly. However he’s sent to stay with his grandfather, with  a couple of his camp friends tagging along. Erik’s granddad doesn’t seem impressed with his ‘soft’ grandson, and merely look at his friends with bemusement. However as time passes both sides show that by opening up there’s more to both of them than meets the eye. While a little bit silly at times and occasionally needlessly oblique (but then, it is French), it can’t hide the film’s relatively simple but strong central message. There is a slight condescension towards rural people though, that the film unfortunately never really deals with.

Morgan (2012)

Director: Michael D. Akers

Stars: Leo Minaya, Jack Kesy and Benjamin Budd

Morgan Review
by DR (10/21/2011)
“I'D RATHER BE fucking dead than go on living in a wheelchair,” Morgan Oliver exclaims at one unguarded point in the film Morgan. It's not so much the small stuff Oliver dislikes about a life confined to a wheelchair, from the extra effort it takes to simply get out of bed to the difficulties in maneuvering around a small kitchen. The beginning scenes show the character struggling with those types of routine, everyday tasks.
Ultimately, the gay athlete is most frustrated that his new life in a wheelchair has put limits on his fiercely competitive nature and his previously wide-ranging mobility. A wipeout during a bike race last year broke Oliver's back and paralyzed him from the waist down. It will take time before he's able to compete in that same race again, using a customized bike — not to mention a lot of convincing to get his mother and best friend, adamantly opposed to more racing, on board.

Michael Akers's fascinating, quietly powerful film follows Oliver in his new life in a wheelchair. And then comes love. Akers's film is in many ways a traditional love story, told with a refreshing twist: A handsome, hunky gay man falls in love with another, who just happens to be wheelchair-bound. Jack Kesy plays the able-bodied Dean Kagen, who pursues a relationship with Oliver, played by Leo Minaya.
The two bond over basketball, as well as their respective movie-star good looks: Kesy looks a bit like James Dean, while Minaya resembles Gyllenhaal. The two actors have a nice chemistry and sexual heat, and they portray the budding romance with just the right amount of initial awkwardness and eventual passion. Kagen is a natural caregiver, and seems in every way perfect for Oliver, far less troubled by Oliver's handicapped body than Oliver is.
Oliver still has the drive of a competitive athlete, and he ends up pushing himself and his relationship a bit too hard, leading to a lot more struggle and soul-searching. Fortunately, Akers's film has a lightness of being, never getting bogged down in too many details.
You're never too concerned that Oliver won't eventually figure the right course to take.

Notre paradis (original title)

Director: Gaël Morel

Genre: Drama, Crime
Country: France
Language: French
Duration: 96 min

Stars: Stéphane Rideau, Dimitri Durdaine and Béatrice Dalle

Something deeply dark and disturbing yet visually enticing awaits viewers for this French drama about a 30-something hustler whose neurosis about aging is, we assume,  turning him to a motiveless murderous monster.   After finding a younger man (Dimitri Durdaine) lying dazed, damaged and suffering from memory loss in the cruising grounds of Bois de Boulogne, Paris,  Vassili (Stephane Rideau) shrouds his new muse, becoming a hybrid of pimp/lover figure to his new squeeze.  After a client, who Vassili believes he had murdered, is discovered living in Paris, the two lovers and now accomplices are forced to go on the run.

Our Paradise is a enigmatically beautiful piece of cinematography with much thought given to ensuring that the characters are either corpulently grotesque or fallen angelic beauties, not in equal measure however.  Angelo is the fallen angelic beauty - both inside and out.  Vassili’s world is full of these gross, bloated and aged individuals who, one imagines used to be paying trade, now, with fresh blood, and Vassili’s burgeoning pot belly hindering his prospects; the fallen angelic beauty reignites business.   One odd scene, Angelo is examined by a doctor, ostensibly to see whether the boy was raped shoves a camera into the boy’s anus and describes his findings ‘smooth as silk.’   This is  however, as far as character probing goes.  Un-complex and a little two dimensional in some respects the characters are more animalistic in their pursuits.  Durdaine is almost entirely detached from his character, which adds to the rather chilling but lonely portrayal of Angelo.

Durdaine plays an almost perfect twink to Rideau’s inflated frame and the audience is given many opportunities to revel in his nakedness, which of course is wonderful and does distract from some the many questions that the film’s lack of motive throws up.

One of the key issues explored is the often mismatched relationships between younger gay men and their respective elder partners. The narrative doesn’t judge, but merely outlines the possible issues faced by such relationships, most notably replaceability for a younger, newer, fresher model and the power struggle between the monied and the beneficiary.

The supporting cast are superb, their performances loiter in the mind as an uneasy feeling engulfs you.  Sterling performances from supporting cast Béatrice Dalle and a young Mathis Morisset who shows acting promise far beyond his years.

The brilliantly translated subtitles really draw you into the action,  distracting the audience from analyzing our anti heros’ intentions.   Why the film is called Our Paradise remains, annoyingly elusive, as paradise is unobtainable for Vassili and Angelo.   The ending makes the film feel a little pointless and if your looking for a bow to wrap up the little details you certainly won’t find it in this film.

A Lower Power (2009)

A Lower Power (2009)

Director: Robert O'Geen
Writer: Tim Bland
Genre: Drama
Country: USA
Year: 2009
Duration: 98 min

Stars: Mathew Lotto, William McMichael, Terri J. Freedman

Not everyone gets to watch a video of his conception - or wants to. Thibodeaux sure doesn't, but such openness is the exasperating norm for his free-love parents, Hank and Stormy, whose nest Thibodeaux can't wait to leave. Thibodeaux sets off to college seeking a sexless social life but his chastity strategies meet their match when he meets a hottie that unleashes his appetites.. But what this young man thinks he wants collides with the hard reality of desire in the idiosyncratic, unrepentantly sexual comedy-drama, A Lower Power, a gay coming-of-age story where the coming of age isn't about being gay.

Genre: Drama

Duration: 95 min

Miko Jacinto’sSalo” (Share) is a surprising work. Unlike most pink films, Jacinto engages and dives into his narrative - frame after frame - with hardly a spoken word. In fact, most of the spoken lines are left hanging, i.e. there’s hardly an exchange of words. This eventually creates semblance of mood and nuances. “Salo” also benefits from Romy Suzara’s beautifully composed scenes, giving the impression that this isn’t your hurried, shoddy, one-take production.
But there is a problem where narrative details are concerned. Perla Bautista’s character, for example, bewilders. She’s the coquettish “tita” who “barks” loudly, spewing lines like: “Bumangon ka na. Masaya ang mundo. Naalala mo pa ba, dati sabay tayong nanlalalaki?” You aren’t sure this was meant to be spoken by an elderly matron. In another scene (where she gazes at the driver washing the car), she said: “Type ko siya. Matrona ba, magaling ding maghugas.” When told that Levi’s spoken for, she replied: “Kahit gawin mo pa akong kerida, ok lang!” And as if to seal the real identity – or sexual preference – of the character: “Nakadami ka na ba?” Though I understand that her character was meant to stir vitality to an otherwise dour story, her character is a tad too uncouth to be believable. You only have to see how matronly she dresses to feel this incongruence to her peculiar manner of speaking.

Xavier Dolan, Anyways!, 4 December 2012

Author: Zahraa Ahmed from Saudi ( IMDB)

Fist of all, I should tell ya that I never been excited to watch a movie for a really long time; you know that excitement when you watch the trailer over 10 times in a row. yeah, I got excited this much to watch Laurence Anyways. and as a Xavier Dolan's huge fan that makes me know for sure that this movie is gonna be a pure art. and I don't even really care that much about directors. but DAMN! Xavier Dolan is the perfect man. No, I really mean it. he's gorgeous and talented in so many ways. Although all of the films he directs are about homosexuality, but what the heck! sometimes I hesitate to recommend any of his films to people I know cause I fear they might be narrow minded about all of the homosexuality stuff. Personally, I wouldn't mind watching a Xavier Dolan's film everyday and I'd still enjoy it as if it was the first time I watch it. I killed my mother, heartbeats, and now laurence anyways.
Laurence Anyways is almost 3hrs long. I thought I'd be bored. but somehow, something kept me watching. maybe it's wanting to know how the story ends. or maybe it's the great soundtrack, or the scenes that feed your soul visually. I mean really, why bother going to a photo gallery or a concert or whatsoever when you can simply watch Laurence Anyways or any film of Dolan's, and you'll find everything you love combined together beautifully. maybe I'm just exaggerating but that's because I'm this amazed.
At first, I thought Laurence and his girlfriend weren't' good looking enough, but anyone who watches this film will absolutely fall in love with every single character in the film. and somehow you'll find them extremely beautiful because you just feel their passion and stuff.

When I posted on twitter that I'm so excited to watch it. my friend replied saying, "it's a bold movie." well, I don't know how dirty films like the hangover are okay to watch and a masterpiece like this is "bold"! One thing I noticed about Xavier's Dolan films, is that he tries not to show us nude scenes, cause it ain't pretty. nobody wants to see butts or whatsoever, well, maybe perverts want to, but that's not the point. that is to say, even sex scenes are somehow beautiful and amazing, like the sex scene in 'I killed my mother' with all the painting and the sad sex desperate sex scenes in 'heartbeats'. you can clearly understand what Dolan is implying. In Laurence Anyways, Dolan portrays the relationship between Laurence and his girlfriend as a happy couple who are madly in love with each other, before they gradually collapse. What I'm truing to say here is that Dolan never fails at impressing his audience.
The soundtrack was painfully amazing, as always. the film stats with a song by 'fever ray' which made me realize that Dolan is a fan of this band. yeah? you remember the scene in the woods in 'heartbeats'? No? Okay. I swear if I had to steal one thing from Xavie Dolan it'd be his ipod or iphone or whatsoever. the man has an amazing taste in music.
When I done watching this film, I realized that 3 hours weren't enough. I wouldn't mind if it was 10 hours long or a series with a thousand seasons. it's just pure perfection. you know when you watch a perfect film that is so perfect to the extent that you wouldn't mind if it ends after only 5 minutes or in the middle of it because it's so perfect, and whatever the end is it'd still be great and perfect. yeah, Laurence Anyways is one of those films. and I'm still happy and impressed with the ending scene. the song was oh-my-god amazing. it's like it came into my soul and said hi and settled there. I can never get bored watching the ending scene; so simple yet perfect.

And before I forget, I love the almost 5 seconds Xavier appeared in the party scene. yeah keep it up babes.
In short, Laurence Anyways is 3 hours long, BUT, it's 3 hours of love, joy, regrets, tears, emotions, passion, and XAVIER DOLAN'S PERFECTION. Go watch it! and if you watch it and hate it then I'll hate you back.

After the Sky Turned Black -- Short Film from Ellis Watamanuk on Vimeo.
A photojournalist, recently blinded in a terrorist attack overseas, picks up a young man from a bar and takes him home. Throughout the course of the night, the secrets of his past are revealed...

Starring Nicholas Wilder, Travis Grant, and Ara Woland.
Written and directed by Ellis Watamanuk.

"Rightfully delivered in an unhurried pace and well shot and scored throughout, this is a moving work on the risks that journalists of both text and photo mediums take, in documenting the brutal ravages of man's inhumanity to mankind; a poignant narrative that will no doubt resonate with many. All of which makes for a short film that whilst gay to the core, speaks volumes on how being in the wrong place, at the wrong time, can forever change your life and that of those around you. And for a debut piece, that's a telling message, indeed." -- Dave Hall, Gay Celluloid

Slijedi upoznavanje u četiri oka i priča. Podigne glavi kaže : Ošamari me. Ja u čudu, kako da šamaram tolikog čovjeka. On opet ponovi da ga ošamarim. Blago ga pljesnem po licu, a on kaže jače. Kada sam shvatio šta želi toliko sam pobjesnio da sam ga zaista išamarao i izmlatio ga ko pseto.
Nisam uživao u tome, posebno ne u nekom seksualnom smislu. Naprosto izduvao sam se.
Zato nikad ne reci - NIKAD!

Bound And Thrashed is a story which echoes the idea that its not until we are put in a situation that may seen unnatural to us, that we can truly uncover what we desire and what we are capable of. Nathan (Andrew Hood) is depressed and unable to move on from a former lover, his concerned friend Tess (London Gabraelle) persuades him into going on a blind date with Geoffrey (John Cunningham), an older man who has an unusual appetite.
Danas toga naravno više nema, osim u nekim afričkim i islamskim državama.

For two weeks in the summer 1962, police filmed 68 men in the public restroom. This manner of investigation resulted in 38convictions for sodomy, eachwith minimum sentece of one year in the state of penitentiary.

Its summer 1974 and all looks rosy, with the Scotland World Cup team, under Billy Bremner's captaincy, in the Finals.  After being all over Brazil in their first match, Scotland now has to beat Yugoslavia to get into the knock-out rounds.
But in suburban Glasgow, 13 year old Stephen, is keener on seeing his favorite glam rock band in concert than following the progress of Scotland's World Cup football squad. Meanwhile his football fanatic father Charley isn't about to let "a bunch of nancy boys" turn his son's head away from sporting glory. Stephen's hopes of following his Glam Rock idols appears to be dashed after his father catches him in his older sister  Donna's gold platform boots and full glam make-up. Charley meanwhile is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his wife (and mother to his two teenage children) and when Stephen tells him he thinks his mother would have let him go to the concert, Charley explodes. With nothing now left to lose, Stephen and Donna go to see Slade in concert. Only on their return do they start to worry about the consequences, yet when they arrive back it is to a much chastened and reflective Charley. The film ends with the glimmerings of a new understanding between the members of the family where a father has to come to terms with his son and daughter growingup and facing up to their need for freedom to be what they themselves want to be.
